My house is near ICF. ICF is a city in itself. It occupies huge chunks of land in Villikakkam, Anna Nagar, Perambur and Ayanavaram. It has got schools, hospitals and what not. The area surrounding ICF will always be neat and pristine with well-laid roads. It has also got parade grounds/stadiums and grounds capable of playing different sports. They also keep constructing and expanding the manufacturing hubs to produce more.

I am son of an ICF employee who worked there from 1955-87. I passed out from ICF High School in 1972. Have visited the factory several times back those days. Have seen the first GM of ICF Mr. Hydari (who was from the Nizam family and hand selected by Nehruji). He is the main architect who ensured ICF became a success, which is free of DMK and ADMK politics. He is the only GM who had the longest tenure of 10+ years. The GMs that followed him later were known to have corrupt. I am glad to know that the firm has survived all those bad elements and is doing well. They still can perform better to be on par with the coach makers of China and Europe. In order to get there, it needs to be privatized and run by professional managements.

People know how was the condition till 2014 of Indian railways and especially govt units like icf, which was mainly manufacturing iron coaches, only after modi ji gave ultimatem to all the govt sectors to perform or perish at the same time gave free hand to all the GMs for adopting latest technology as a result of which after 2015 icf chennai became largest manufacturer of lhb(though this version of tech is also very old) coaches. your nizam never ensured manufacturing of lhb coaches. Then why vande bharat has to come after 2015 only why not in 1970s. Such a stoop low mentality people never seen.

Thank you for the valuable information with regards to first GM. Further, all PSU started at that time were doing well. HMT, ECIL, etc etc. Corrupt management and WTO agreement in 1990 spoilt the smooth running of PSU.

@@9487087496 One of the main issues in any PSU is that the management cannot dismiss underperforming workforce. The union leaders act like thugs and they hold the units as ransom. The unions are political wings of governments in power at either center or state. Until this evil is stamped out, PSUs will keep draining the exchequer. The production incentives the planning departments develop allow sufficient avenues for the workers to game the system, so much that one person could do the work of 10. Back in the '70s some of the toilets in the workshops at ICF were reserved for playing cards. Minority of workers would do the work of the whole team, then the whole team would share the incentive pay per private agreements they would have made. Sincere Supervisors would get thrashed up if they tried to correct the miscreants. This was the case 45 years ago. I don't think this could have changed much since then. Even back then they were producing 1000 coaches per year. This was forcibly reduced when new coach factories came up elsewhere. This will be story in different forms at all the PSUs. People WILL become corrupt if the incentive structures are improper in any system, at PSUs, municipal corporations, educational institutions, banks, political parties, defense departments, anywhere for that matter. Indian people want everything to be done by their government. They do not trust the private operators. We all pay the price for this. Political families know this all too well, operate accordingly and reap rewards. People are okay with goons of the DMK, ADMK, Congress et al making money this way. Long live the PSUs....

I visit icf rail expo in 2016. There is lot of vendors to produce spare parts, interios, seats. I hope railways going to be overhaul in coach manufacturing. But in reality most of them we never seen in latest coaches to high end coaches. There is lot of room for improvement in design and coach manufacturing. Railways prevent fare hike and all hike later shift to ac coach and frights. If we book ac coach there is not much improvement compare to non ac coach. If we see global coach design, interiors. We know how far we behind. Hope if will change soon.

We are able to assemble world class automobiles in India...and even export to Europe & US. despite this , the quality of coaches made by ICF is sub par and poorly engineered and finished. In the era of globalisation, we are not able to meet the global standards for rail coach manufacturing.... Even today, you can find lot of cut and paste jobs in our rail coaches. ...!

@Nandan Polpakara ICF doesn't make LHB coaches. They are made by RCF, Punjab. They might have made a few when demand was extremely high, but they make only train-18 and export oriented coaches now.

IFC has very high manufacturing costs due to monopolistic set up & rampant curruption in procurements. I wonder what type of expertise our Railway Engineers have that basic thing like Wheel-axle units can't be made by IR/ Vendors and order for Wheel-axle goes to China. If anybody has any doubt about inefficiency and incompetence of IFC,check their Exports against global tenders. Mostly they fail in competitive global bids because of high costs attributable to currption in monopolistic SARKARI CULTURE.

Train 18 got its name as it was to be build in the year 2018 and not that it got manufactured within 18 months.I have been following news of train 18 before it was build and at that time also the name was train 18 and another train that is train 20 was also named as it was supposed to come in the year 2020.

@@agsubmani Tilting doesnt have any connection to landscape, talgo trial was a success in india, but they rejected talgo by saying sillly points like bogies cant be seperated and platform is higher than trains. The real reason for rejection is our burocracy and ego of our oficers. Talgos technology is way aheda of our indian trains. Look at uzbeskistan they have bullet train network with speed of 250 km hour,they are using talgo train,uzbeskistan is a poor country they only spend around 1000 crore rupees for construction of that network, they used their already built railway network and made some upgtradation and bought train from spain. But in india we are spending more than 1 lakh crore for a small length between mumbai and ahemadabad. Train18 can run upto 180km, but if its run on that speedon indian track it will derail. Thats why i said we should use Tilting technology on our trains, by that way train can maintain its speed on curves and there wont be any accident

R&D of Railways (RDSO) is located in UP and not in Bengaluru or Hyderabad. It is not as if DRDO etc. are working at peak efficiency, but history shows that the central investments in the south have performed far better than its cousins in the north. It is a shame that IR still has not been a potent organization after this many decades. This is the story of all central government R&D institutions and IITs. No world class institution. Compare the number of patents being filed by India vs China or major western OECD countries. We supposedly have the largest number of technical manpower. We have quantity but not quality. Unfortunately we are having to keep importing planes, guns etc. after 7 decades of independence, while people of our origin have become CEOs big hitech companies in the west. Why? Why? most of our spending goes into paying salaries and pensions to the bloated bureaucracies of these units and perverse incentives in these institutions. They have become training grounds for people who would like to go and work abroad. Some scientists who left have even won Nobel prizes. It is not that we do not have talent.

Truth is that nehru assurped the post of prime minister from Sardar Patel. Otherwise India would have been developed country and instead of Vande Bharat type trains sets Bullet train would have been manufacturing. Stop your concocted stories. Though nehru got first chance to rule he just inaugurated the above swiss sponsored coach manufacturing co for british but after independence it became Indian co and inaugurated by nehru only. From then, till 2014 ICF chennai was manufacturing iron bodied coaches only and was in a dilapidated condition because of manufacturing and adopting old technology even those underdeveloped countries were not taking order. Then after it is the most dynamic PM Modiji who gave life to the slowly decaying ICF and gave free hand and encouragement to manufacture the LHB coaches. As a result from 2015 till now it has become world's largest manufacturers of railway coaches and the export also increased due to the encouragement of dynamic PM modiji initiation of having aerodynamic designs. So this overhauling happened only because of modiji bjp govt and not by nehru congress govt. If modiji wanted he could have also encouraged other private players but he gave first chance to govt organisation only. Now it is upto those working in those icf, mcf or rcf, or kcf govt factories to show more technical abilities on par with developed countries train sets. Still vande bharat look needs to be sharp and aluminium based which is the future vision of modiji. Jai Hind.
