How Chess Spread from India to the World | Flashback with Palki Sharma
Chess is played by millions of people around the world. It is a highly organised game with a dedicated fan base. But have you wondered how chess emerged as a board game? Historians trace its origin to 6th century India, where a similar board game was quite popular among kings and traders. It was taken by royal ambassadors and travellers to different parts of the world, including China and West Asia. Local rulers and cultural differences influenced and changed the ancient Indian game. How did that game evolve into modern-day chess? Who created the rules and designed the chess pieces? Palki Sharma tells you on Flashback.

I like playing chess, it’s been my favorite since I can use moves and strategies, but I still wonder why our younger generation is not into it. India has always been diverse and got influenced by other cultures and induced into our own maybe that’s how we ignore and ultimately forget our own culture and games, don’t get me wrong I like western or eastern culture too but I still like our own culture , it’s kinda sad to see people thinking chess is only played by old generation people or old aged people these days 😅

@@Chesswalk570 The word 'chathuranga' is not originally a Sanskrit word. It is copied and hijacked from the Tamil word 'Sathurangam', like many other words. Sathurangam is the combination of two words 'sathuram' (means square) and 'arangam' (means arena). Both these words are non-existent in Sanskrit. How confidently she is telling "chaturanga, the word itself is Sanskrit" @ 1:56. George Orwell was completely right right in declaring "ignorance is strength" 🤣🤣🤣 By seeing this comment, people will criticise me that i am divisive and promoting enmity based on language. But the same people will have no problem if this word is shamelessly patented as sanskrit 😂 I believe Chess is yet another uncredited intellectual invention of Tamils. As a Kenyan, India has always been a great civilization. The food, music (Lata Mangeskar, etc), the old architecture, the traditional clothes, CHESS, and much more. The only issues i think India has is the caste system, and corruption. Not saying my nation is perfect, just saying all nations have their good and bad. I loved India when i visted New Delhi.

Corruption is human nature in the end and I have seen it everywhere that I am cynical that there is no place on this planet that is devoid of it, Including all Western countries and particularly all western countries. That's a convenient stick to beat poor countries with by western media. There is corruption in India and there will always be, but that is true for all countries, it's just how much is exposed in media differs. No country has placed more constitutional checks and measures in place to combat an ancient custom of its culture as India has against caste system. Is it all good now? No! But it has one of the oldest and most extensive affirmative action policy and strong anti-discrimination laws to give a strong hand up for historically discriminated castes and groups. This is taken advantage of by millions of under privileged families every year and lifted millions of historically such discriminated people. This is another convenient stick by western media and their leftist cronies and enablers of western deep state that falls on its face if one seriously digs deeper unbiasedly.

There are 'special privileges' guaranteed to the lower caste in india by the LAW. These include special quotas, reservations and scholarship. Ppl from other religions and ppl of upper caste are queing up to get ' lower ' caste certificates to gain these benefits. That is the reality of majority of caste scenario in india for you. I have personally witnessed and experienced it , so I can vouch for it. As for discrimination in rural areas, yes it exists. But caste is a type of class based discrimination. And every country has it , it's just that in India's case it's exaggerated and highlighted. Our country has actors , singers , ministers, President, army chief's and leading businessmen from what is labelled as lower caste in the west. Compare it with the position of aboriginals in Australia and America and the western hypocrisy will be exposed to you. The west doesn't practises what it preaches to others but diverts attention of the world from its own issues, by creating/ highlighting fake narratives about other countries. If India really is as discriminatory against lower caste ,as it is claimed , how did these ppl ascend to such high ranks and status? And how is it , that the lower caste has more rights in our country, (guaranteed by the law ) over rest of its citizens ? I would appreciate if you ponder over this rationally and look at the official stats of everything I stated to verify it. I know your country is a victim of western propaganda too. Therefore I would urge you to understand and conduct your own research instead of blindly believing something. Love to Kenya.❤

Chess originated in northern India during the Gupta Empire in the 6th century AD. It was known as "chaturanga," which translates to "four divisions of the military"-infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots. These divisions are represented by the pieces in the game. From India, chess spread to Persia, where it became known as "shatranj," and then to the Islamic world and Europe, evolving into the game we recognize today.

Oldest chess board has been found in SINDHUSARASWATI civilization ( Indus valley civilization /IVC ) LOTHAL along with pieces . Chaturang word itself has come from CHATURANGINI ( चतुरंगिणी ) that is 4 Organ Army - PADATIK/foot soldiers 😮, HASTI SENA/Elephants , RATHAs/Chariots and ASHWAAROHI/ Cavalry . These were commanded by SENAPATI or MANTRI under the RAJA/King . This was game of military strategy . But in Europe this was converted into a game of Palace intrigues . Elephants became BISHOP and MANTRI became the QUEEN .

Thanks for this video. Books are written on this subject. Everyone should learn to play chess because there are life lessons woven in this game. One major points needs to be emphasized is the replacement of Vagir to queen in modern chess...and this was introduced by Queen Isabella of Spain. She was a very powerful figure in her time.

To be honest, a lot of things spread from one place to another and we can't say for sure who or where the said thing was invented. We only know where the final form was made. We know that chess is an European game. The game that we all know and love at least. The origins of the game are unknown. It was most definitely taken from somewhere. Was the game made in what we call India today or Iran? Nobody can say for sure.

@@AsterixGaulOne Am I wrong? I mean, just because she told a story, it doesn't mean it is true. We are talking about that times that were not very well documented not to mention that majority of documentations were lost in time. All we know for sure is the modern game.

@@davout5775 Chess is referred to in ancient literature and anecdotes. The rules may vary from then to now as any game evolves over time. But, chess was originally invented in India and travelled east and west. What is so confusing about this? The presenter gave references to her points; refute them if you believe they are wrong instead of denigrating it as a 'story'?
@davout5775
@davout5775 Ай бұрын
@@AsterixGaulOne What refferences were given? She just told her story from the POV of India which btw did not exist at the time. Undoubtedly, it was described but that doesn't mean it was invented there. Modern chess was also described by that English guy. There are good reasons to believe that the game of chess is older than that due to the use of Chariots which were no longer used at the time of the game's "creation". So we don't know where it was invented. We just say India because that the supposed place of origin.

Nice analysis. I wish we reclaim the symbolism too that is deeply European in the chess. Why can't you make a similar video on trigonometry? Aryabhatia mentions trigonometric tables and a closed form algebriac expression to calculate sin and cos values. Bhaskaracharya's Siddhanta Siromani talks about spherical trigonometry. We used to call jya for sin and kotijya for cos. More details on this in "the imperishable seed" by Bhaskar Kamble.

We’ve so many shared history. Respect to the Chess creators from a Persian. Back then, Sassanian used to say Čatrang since middle Persian as well as Prakrit languages lost the schwa sounds. In early modern Persian, the newly arab speakers who moved to Persia couldn’t pronounce č sound so hence it turned to š and later on, šatranj became the standard word in Persia and Indian subcontinent. The māt in Shāh māt actually means defeat in Persian and I think it means the same in Hindi/Urdu as well.
