We ,Japanse, learn ancient Chinese literatures(漢文) as a subject in high school, which may be inevitable and reasonable for Kanji(漢字) users. And we all know what the character 漢 means. We can hardly be ignorant of Chinese influences at all. Btw, if you visit Tokyo or the other major cities, you may notice that Chinese restaurants are everywhere. You can find one near around (almost) EVERY SINGLE train station. We are so accustomed to Chinese culture. I hope every Chinese ppl knows that.

@Yayoi Kisaragi all i know its that interlocking mecanisms of wooden structure is originated in China. Most of the architectural style of Japan came from Tang dynasty which use the same building principles. Nara streets has the same overlay as Chang an. We have interesting stuffs that are unique such as bonsai (penjing), lamian (ramen) etc... no where else to be found. These are unique cultural stuffs developped here. Before the japanese envoy to chang an japan used to have a more austrinonesian architecture

Tong dynasty was the most influential in Asia because it opened up to the world and relaxed many policies. It was also a huge economic powerhouse. The cultural exchanges happened most during the Tong Dynasty which is descendent to cantonese and all Chinatown in the world.

A very decent presentation - I like the timeline across the top of the page as you go through all the different eras and ages, and the clarity of Japan studying Chinese writing/central gov't, then Chinese studying in Japan as it dealt with the West a bit better than China had done earlier. And it's difficult to sort out China-Korea-Japan//Japan-Korea-China (and Taiwan and Vietnam)... but if people can go over it often enough, it can become as easy as sorting out Greek-Roman-Celtic-Germanic etc. in Europe..

Good video. One thing I would supplement is that Japan went into isolation due to Portuguese missionaries coming in with merchants and tried to change Japan through culture and religion. The Tokugawa bakufu didn’t appreciate losing their ruling power to this influence and shut their ports to western countries. Japanese military technology suffered as a result. They were still using muskets when the Americans showed up with automatic weapons as you see in the Last Samurai. This is pretty much how they ended up cow-towing to the Americans in the 19th century.

I always thought it was odd that Chinese adaptations of the Three Kingdoms period tend to greatly understate the accomplishments of Eastern Wu, so even if the Japan/Wu relationship is not as strong as the theories suggested, it's good that at least Japanese adaptations are willing to give the Southlanders of Wu their due. The south Fujian province speak a language call Minnan language which can be trace to Tang Dynasty. In fact lot of the old school Southern Chinese call the them self Tang people instead of Han people. During the Tang dynasty, Japan considered China really cool. They tried to copy it. In fact, nobles and royalty generally viewed their language as a dialect of Chinese, ignoring the fact that they had to do a mental translation every time they spoke "vernacular" (common Japanese) or write things down (since court Japanese was obviously not Chinese and at this time their writing system was taken from China but not yet modified to suit their own language better). The fact that they needed to do a mental translation should have tipped them off really.

Also after commodore Perry, they started shedding off aspects of their culture both copied from Tang China and parts that were native to the island in an attempt to mimic the west (and what self respecting western power doesn't just grab land that has what they want that's missing at home?). But while I don't think Imperial Japan, Tang China or Qing China were perfect cultures, I do agree that overthrow of the Qing was not an improvement and China had pretty much been a soulless ghoul since 1911 with the creation of the Republic of China and by the time the ROC was a reasonable working state, it was a rump state not controlling mainland China.

It depends, there are predominant characteristics in some of these European countries, like in Norway more people having red hair, in Germany having more people with blond hair and blue eyes, in Spain more people with tanned skin and black hair. OK I accept your long list of translation history in China. But the problem wasn’t there. The problem was the way of utilizing those knowledges in whole society. Many foreigners translated the Western literatures into Chinese. But China had never utilized those effectively. Those knowledges stayed in a state like… entertainment of intellectuals who were extreme minority. But Japan was different. With the background of much higher literacy rate, Japan imported such knowledge from China and translate many more Western literatures uniquely, and utilized those knowledges effectively and modernized its society quickly. That’s why there’s a big issue within the Japanese and Korean communities about taking the 23 and me dna test because often it’ll say Korean or Japanese when they are not from that country, because of the overlapping dna. I love both cultures. But i think the sino-japan relationship is the most bizarre one in the world. There is never exchange of culture. The influence is always one sided, from china to japan in ancient time, and japan to china in modern days. Yet none had over taken the other. It's really like two strangers living next door, they try not to bother each other but still borrow things from each other from time to time.

Japan is actually one of the most popular places for Korean nobility and even at times royalty to escape to whenever they were expelled due to either crimes, political upheaval, and even more importantly destruction of a country. At the end of the Three kingdoms of Korea (Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla), both Goguryeo refugees and Baekje refugees made it to Japan. The Japanese emperor at the time allowed them to form a Japanese styled clans. To this day, the Koma clan is still alive and they have a shrine dedicated to them. To the main point, the former Korean nobility in Japan were generously given some titles and in return they offered princesses to the Emperor. Hence Akihito's comment about "his ties with Korea" which when you really think about it..............isn't exactly a 'tie with Korea' as they were technically expelled from Korea. Nevertheless, I guess they're still ethnically 'Korean'. As for the articles regarding the 'princesses' being offered to Japan, I can't find them/forgotten where i found them.
