As a Christian tribal from Meghalaya..I can say that before my ancestors were once marginalised and treated indifferently by the larger Hindu community for being a tribal..we were not allowed to enter temples and were treated as unclean.. so my ancestors became Christians..we got our dignity, our sense of belonging and our humanity when we became Christians...we had our own place of worship, we run our own schools and hospitals and colleges...we became educated..we have doctors, engineers, IAS officers, professors which I don't think if we remain hindu we would even get the chance to become one . Christianity made us feel human ... Jesus gave us the sense and the strength to live.. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life...no one was there to judge and look down on us... We have our life back and we have Jesus who is our hope..He gave us the hope to life...im proud to be Christian and I don't regret being a Christian..

Read another report that actual percentage of Christians in Andhra Pradesh is 25% but does not show in census as most hide it to continue availing reservation benefits. If they feel so strongly attached to their new faith, should not their priests preach them to stop lying (on census) and come out and petition for continuing the reservation benefits irrespective of faith.

It's the reach of various Christian outfits that has grown throughout Punjab; and well, here are some facts. The chances of conversion are only with those who are financially unstable, it's an unfortunate fact that in Punjab, Mazhabi Sikhs and Valmiki Hindus are the ones having a lower per-capita income, district-wise compared to other 'castes' (as they like dividing us). I do not say this with any prejudices, but rather with personal experiences. I myself have seen these Christian outfits approaching the ones who are economically not sufficient, may they be Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs; here in Kolkata. They know it's easy for them to say 'We'll provide you with shelter, money, home', without doing any of those. In turn, they ultimately convert the lineage, by trying to kill the indigenous identity. As a matter of fact, Indian law has no provision for Muslim and Christian Dalit converts, although reservation recognises Sikh and buddhist Dalits. Ancient Christians of kerala and kanyakumari region who are basically bramhins and other upper castes are obviously rich and extreme elite of India. Second wave of OBC, dalit converts in kerala, goa and few districts of AP, TN also have decent standards due to truck loads of money donated by British and American missionaries invested in 19th century. New dalit converts, mostly rural are following completely different versions created by upper caste pastors. It becomes pretty clear by just speaking to them. Official literacy figures etc., doesn't even count these dalits as Christians, no point in analyzing them

It is a big myth that converting to christianity will end cast discrimination, in fact it takes the discrimination to a different level. I am from kerala, converted christians and pentecostals face even more discrimination from old school christians like catholics and jacobites here in my state. I had a friend who's family was catholic and their servant was a converted christian, I have witnessed how bad she was treated there. Converted christians were even victims of honor killings because they fell in love with a regular christian. The only good thing about conversion is that you don't have to worry about multiple gods but just one guy called jesus, and the bad part is that you loose a culture which includes all sorts of arts/music/stories etc. I know people who got converted years ago and now feel like they are in a place where they don't belong to, they are confused and some of them have even become atheists later. Others are still busy in comparing the non existent gods against each other and figuring out which one could do better for them. People think that conversion can alter their identity, like they can break out of this "caste" shell and become free which is not true. It will just put you inside another even more complex shell which may not even fit you properly and choke you even more. Wearing someone else's costume may change your appearance for a while, but not forever. Only solution to end caste discrimination is education, get well educated and migrate to cities with good jobs in hand. Oldies who worry much about caste are dying out in these big cities and young generation do not care about caste if you are well off. Remove those rotten roots in your villages ruled by upper class and embrace the busier city life, one can get a much better identity there!!

I think it's true. I am a catholic and is from a catholic dominated area and didn't know of discrimination. But once I met a guy who is an obc christian from a really well off family and we were talking about religion and faith and he got so furious against me and told me that people like me consider ourselves upper castes and discriminates people like him. Yes those who are brahmin convert to Christianity had better condition already , and those who are valmiki & converted to Christianity has not good condition before converting to Christianity . I think many people misunderstood Christianity to be a western religion or a white man's religion. Jesus was not white and was not from the west, and can be worshipped with one's distinct culture, tradition or attire. Jesus was not against any particular culture, the gospel (good news) is for the world. He came for people. People greatly misunderstood becoming Christian to be more like european and dressed like one of them. To cite one example - Sadhu Sundar Singh (also from Punjab) a great Indian Christian missionary dressed in saffron and preached the gospel as do many Christian today in Tamil Nadu. As the Bible says "we are all made in the image of God", and there is no other religion where you call "God the father". The philosophy has been unmatched and most attractive for many who are marginalised and oppresed.

Well, casteism is there in every religion in India but still, it's very unfortunate that we see it in Sikhism. Sikh gurus were so specific about this issue that made it a rule that food for all people will be cooked in a common kitchen and people from all parts of the community have to eat together, they did not give lofty ideas but they made sure that their followers implement them.
