I was on a crew digging out a bituminous coal fire in Pennsylvania...the geology was fascinating...lots of lepidodenron and cordaite fossils and the coal seam was 12 feet thick!!! Was a walk back in time!!!

I somehow became obsessed with the topic of coal. I can't stop watching videos about it. Same with crude oil. It just is crazy that we run our economics and industry based on dead plants and animals.

how does the plant material become pure carbon? what happened to everything else? why doesn't peat decompose and lose its carbon when it's mostly burned off as CO2 by the bacteria? where do the hydrocarbons in bituminous coal come from? where do they go when the coal turns to anthracite?

Ho bro. Do you know which kind of coal needs to add while making BBQ or shihsa cubes charcoal ? Bituminous or Subbituminous coal ?
@amitsengupta01
@amitsengupta01 8 жыл бұрын
+Araz Isk - for domestic purpose bituminous will be expensive. Charcoal is charred wood and coal is a rock. While sub-bituminous coal is used for domestic purpose, nevertheless charcoal is a good option too. Because simply its cheap and doesn't emit much carbon smoke.

Amit Sengupta Thank you for reply. I have small business, producing shisha charcoal briquettes. So sometimes the buyers complaining that it's not hard enough and leaving many ash. I would like to know will it work if i grind bituminous or subbituminous coal and mix 50/50 with charcoal ? And which one easy burns sub bituminous or bituminous ?
@amitsengupta01
@amitsengupta01 8 жыл бұрын
+Araz Isk - I don't know about how the ratio would work. But I can tell you one thing that Bituminous coal has high calorific value meaning it will produce more heat because it is a little harder than sub-bituminous. Otherwise both burns at a good rate. That's why a combination of both is used in thermal power station for generating electricity, but I don't know the exact ratio.

I think the time frame given for the ages of coal is incorrect, actually much of the information here is based off of long held assumptions that are now being questioned. It takes a long time before other ideas are given even the slightest consideration.

Most coal was formed before there was fungi to break down dead plant matter. Imagine a world where plants/trees died but didn’t rot and just kept building up over millions of years.

Very helpful video! Idk if it’s because I am in a general Earth Science course or what, but my professor said that anthrocite actually is the worst coal, because most of the carbon has been taken out of it. This happens because it sits too long. Bituminous is the best. Idk. Just relaying info. 😬😂

You missed the most interesting bit. Coal only formed in the volume it did, because the fungi around at the time couldn’t break down lignin. So the dead wood didn’t rot. Once the fungi had evolved the ability to do that, coal basically stopped forming. That was around 300million years ago.

Now I understand that I work in factory in boiling machine and I thought hard to ignite because of wet coal (got drenched from raining) and I noticed that has difference of coal I saw like shiny one that u can crush it by stumping on it and hard one has very dark but not shiny that's very hard so I end up using hammer to crush it.

Hi, first of all thank you for the video, i know nothing about coals and you have explained it really clear for me. I want to ask you a few questions about identifying the coal type. I have recently come across in doing identification experiments of coals, I have a lab report of the sample coal content, but I am having trouble identifying which type of coal it is. So I am hoping you could help me out here. The sample was tested in air dried basis, and the results are as follow: moisture 1.5%, ash 14.3%, Vol 17.4%, Fix carbon 67% and total sulfur 0.41%. It has a dark black color surface (unlike the gray color surface in your video), it has a bit of the shiny surface (not a lot), and it was pretty dense. At first I thought it was a bitumious coal, but then its carbon content was only 67% and it has a low moisture value. Base on the info, would you be able to identify which type it is? and perhaps explaining to me why it has such low carbon content and low moisture percentage please? Also is sulfur a big factor to coals? thank you!!

Question everything...This place called earth is very strange and a lot of "smart" people don't know as much as they think...some are even trained not to think but just repeat, and sadly they are rewarded for not thinking. Could be as simple as our history is much different than we're told and we live on an abandoned quarry...makes you think...lol

I recently moved to NE Pennsylvania and turns out I have coal on my property and mineral rights. Now I did not know that their was a difference between types of coal or that their were types. Apparently the NE united States has the largest know anthracite deposits in the world (not that we are taking advantage of this resource because heaven forbid), and when anthracite coal burns, the flame is blue, has almost no smoke, and leaves little ash. So I want to start doing some experiments / research with this stuff, any input or ideas are welcome
