I had to laugh at your concept of hot. I'm in western Texas, the usual high temperature in the summer around here is 43/44 C. Not as bad as Arizona, where it can reach close to 50 C in some parts of the state. Hot is when you open your door to go outside and you feel like you are walking into an oven. On the flip side, when a freak cold wave caused the temperature to fall to minus 18 C last winter, we all thought we'd die from the cold. The average Russian probably wouldn't have even thought about it.

It should go without saying, but you never mentioned socks. I'm not talking about regular, general-use socks, I mean a pair of good, thick socks, and be sure to buy boots large enough to accommodate them (as well as your feet). Most of the United States doesn't get as cold as Russia, but thick socks are essential for the winter months here.
@nataliak26932 жыл бұрын
True about socks. In Russia you need good warm socks. However it also depends on what boots you ware. Most winter boots in Russia are lined with insulating materials such as sherpa, faux fur or even real fur in the coldest parts. So you might wear regular socks if your boots are super warm.

Some of Russia's reputation for cold has to do with the years 1812 and 1941. Two of the most abnormally cold winters in recorded Russian history just happened to somehow coincide with massive military invasions by vastly superior (in terms of training, numbers, and equipment) foreign powers, and played a huge role in the eventual failures of those invasions. Now any real student of military history will tell you that the hubris of Bonaparte and Hitler led both to expect quick victories which would render winter preparations unnecessary and to inadequately prepare their supply lines, and they would be correct, but the unusual brutality of winter 1812-13 and winter 1941-42 is often given a little more credit than it deserves. Therefore, those outside Russia who know the military history but are unfamiliar with the great variability of its climate make the association that Russia = cold, and Russia gets tagged with a description which is not totally fair.

Well. Its also depends from your body type and region. Because -20 in Moscow or St.Petersburg feels like -35 in syberia. Reason this city`s have rivers going through them and air humidity is very high. at the same moment in many Siberian city`s the air is more "dry" and more cold temperature doesnt really feels like cold. I have endomorph body type - for me cold is good and +22 or higher - im dying.

Nobody tries to compare Siberia/Russia to hot countries. What Fedor is trying to point is that Russia is not a "cold white desert always covered with snow" as they imagine it in other countries. In many areas it is really warm and even hot. Believe me if you walk in 32C in Moscow it feels like 50C in the desert because of asphalt and high buildings that reflect heat.

A couple of points that were not explained re: winter clothing. (a) Layering - nothing mentioned about what you put on between the t-shirt and the coat. There should be at least 2 layers in between - a long-sleeved warm shirt or thin turtleneck etc, and a woolen or fleece jumper. (b) The overcoat needs to be not just water- and winde-proof, but also warmly lined - with fur, goose / duck down, or synthetic fleece. (c) The hat shown is ok if you are going a short distance from house to car etc; if you are planning to be outside for any period of time, you need a warm fur ushanka, that covers your whole head and where you can turn the flaps down over your ears. Alternatively, if a woolen hat like the one shown is worn, you need a warm hood attached to your coat so you can put it on over the woolen hat. (d) The socks need to be thick and woolen. (e) Gloves - a lot of people wear woolen gloves that give you dexterity, but also wear waterproof mittens over them. When not needed (e.g. you need to take your AKM off safety...) the mittens may hang by your sleeeves on a thin strong cord that goes from one to the other through the sleeves of your coat. That way you'll never lose one of them! (f) When he says "underpants", he really means "longjohns" :)

But if I enter into a store, I won´t be suffering the overheating of my clothes + climatization systems? How do you deal with this? It is an infinite story of dressing and undressing along the journey?
@wheeling85332 жыл бұрын
I lived all my life in Russia and never faced something like overheating because of clothes during winters, just sweating if you're staying too long in a store but I guess we just used to cold winters. You get used to warm temperature of a store and because of it you feel colder outside. Unbutton your jacket is normal in stores. It actually depends on your health, but I've never seen a person fainting because of overheating in stores.

In British English we call pants, trousers and confusingly we use pants interchangeably to mean either trousers or mens underwear aka underpants sometimes women's but mostly men's (women's typically knickers or panties and never panties for men's underwear). Those long pants we wear under trousers we call either thermal pants or long johns.

In mountains, yes. However most cities are located in valleys where temps are much higher.

Correction: Vladivostok, like most of Russia, is in Asia. Not “near” Asia.

He meant Asian countries.. Russia is Eurasia
@nataliak26932 жыл бұрын
@@spider.monkey.ninja.assassin Agree. He meant to say near Asian countries such as China, Mongolia, Korea, Japan. This is common Russian expression to say "near Asia". Also though most of Russian territory is in Asia, capital of the country and major cities are located in European part. Most of population are residing there.
