Great explaination and love the fact that you went beyond to explain how a multi band is used and the expander. I didn't know what it was. Figured it was the inverse of a compressor. :P Thanks! More tutorials definitely.

Extremely helpful video. It's great that you try to be as simple as possible!

To make it fatter you can give it a very fast attack to take away the transients then add it back in with a transient designer but that's just the way I do it. Great tutorial! Very Informative.

Very cool man, you helped me understand compressors a bit clearer. Great job :)

you´re right, of course. there are so many techniques to use a compressor for different things. but in this tutorial i wanted to keep it focused on how a compressor actually works, so i had to cut it short (and still 16 minutes long :p )
@ForTiorIJohnny11 жыл бұрын
i think that´s more dependent on the genre. for dance and trance and that stuff it´s pretty useful, i.e. at side-chaining the bass with the kick. but for metal it´s not that important with all the noise going on. i just set a general setting for whatever i want to do and depending on the recording i fine tweak, but i don´t bother being that extremely picky.

awesome man thanks for this tutorial. i would like to see how you aproach a compresor in your songs. i mean i want to se them in action. how do you use them in your mix yeah this is very helpful but would be better to see how yoy use them in practice.

Thanks mate, So.... you only use the AKG's for mixing/mastering? In one of your videos you put those expensive (Cardboard box :-) bass traps in the corner. Is this just for referencing on normal HiFi speakers?
@Musicreator7411 жыл бұрын
Johnny, Quick question, I have searched quite a few of your videos but have not been able to find out......what speakers do you use for mixing and mastering? Cheers mate!

I'm not sure if you do this or if you'd just forgotten to mention it during your tutorial, but do you calculate your attack and release times? Like for example at 140bpm, a 16th note is 107ms long so whatever attack time you'd just used to compress, you subtract that from 107 and use it for the release. Of course it varies from compressor to compressor because of varying reaction times, but it's useful to know as a guideline. I've never tried and I'd like to know your thoughts on the matter.

yes, do it. Pro Tools was the first of its kind that´s why many swear by it. but it´s definitely not the best, at least not for home productions.

do you use logic now instead of cubase? If so which do you prefer and for what reasons?

Only when I'm done the kick drum seems to turn into a "click" drum. It's extremely annoying. I've tried narrow band eq's to ridiculous extents, but their always seems to be a stupid click, it doesn't loose bass or punch, it just clicks. Do you have any solutions or suggestions to try? Does studio drummer sound any better. I'm using superior drummer by the way.

Whats the difference between a compressor with out a pc and the built in compressor that comes with software ? I think the compressor without the pc would be better for me with my 8 Track Tascam Dp -008ex
