This is easily, one of the best videos regarding the completely avoidable East Palestine disaster. It put the people first, it gave their side of their struggles; it concisely put together the chain of events that lead to such a disaster and what we can expect going forward. JT, thank you for your work! And thank you for being on the ground for this. Your work is invaluable in bringing knowledge to the masses

As someone from East Palestine, and I can't express how much I appreciate you making this video and keeping this story in the public eye. I moved away for college a few years ago, and it was such a surreal and difficult experience trying to gather updates and check on my family's safety as everything was unfolding those first few weeks, before national news really picked up the story. There's so much uncertainty around everything, from health to ecological to socio-economic, and just by the nature of it we won't really know the full extent of it for another 15-20 years.I'm not shocked that a big corporation is evil, but it just hits different when the direct victim of that greed is your hometown, the people you grew up with, places you've been 1000s of times over. It sucks on a whole different level :/

Since early February, I've been following the stories by the media and by the everyday people near the train derailment, much to my dismay. The documentation of ecological extermination by Sam Hall and Jonathan Hoeflich opened my eyes to the juxtaposition between the complacent inaction and downplaying by Norfolk & Southern, (and the national government), and the horrible effects of the derailment on the local people and ecosystems. I'm very proud of you, JT and crew, for the work you did in uncovering the bigger picture behind this terrible, preventable, inevitable disaster. Thank you.

As a East Palestine local, my father is a retired engineer that ran these very same rails for NS’s successor, Conrail this may shed some light to understand all the derailments leading up to the East Palestine one. In 1998 when he retired, Conrail was ran and maintained by the federal government and was a profitable company In those days, the rails, crossings, bridges and even rail cars were better maintained and relatively new. However when he retired in 1998 the rails, crossings and bridges were due to be updated and upkeep needed done. When NS and CSX bought Conrail they cut corners to the point of instead of repairs and maintenance, they did away with crossings, lights and gates etc.. and did just enough maintenance to keep the “train on the rails” just to boos profits. Here we are 25yrs later, and we are finding out about all the derailments and it’s coming back to haunt NS and CSX

As a mechanic and soon engineer, the longer a company delay repairs and maintenance, the bigger the damage. If a smal part is not repaired and maintaned, that part will cause problems for bigger parts, causing more parts that would be fine otherwise to fail. I dont see why some companies do this as the cost of not doing maintenance is higher in the end. Maintenance parts like brakepads, grease, some sensors, wires are all cheap

I know I'm very late, but what your father said about CSX and NS neglecting maintenance and resulting in accidents 20 years later sounds exactly like what happened with the DC Metro. There was a deadly train crash recently in my country, Greece, where more than 57 mostly young people tragically died. And damn, the parallels are so many... The privatised rail network, the complete negligence for safety measures, the constant warnings by the unions, the indifference of politicians, the attempts of most media to present is as an accident and "human error". It would have been funny if it wasn't so tragic. Our lives are of no value in comparison to their profits under our current system. Thank you for this great video, JT!

They shouldn't make it to a day in court. Suicide is a major killer of Americans nationwide. None of the psychopaths participating in the corporate greed are ever too far from one of their victims or people victimized by people just like themselves. All we have to do is keep it publicized where evil people are and when. Like the Twitter guy who only tweets Elon Musk's location and actions. That kind of person would be invaluable to someone with a score to settle with Musk. If there was lots of people like that Twitter guy then maybe they could help the suicidal become martyrs. Maybe after a few cases of martyrdom these psychopaths will be more cautious in their acts against the American citizenry. I mean, what's the point of having a bunch of money if you and all your family must be constantly looking over your shoulder. Living in constant fear of surprise retribution for their inequities. Constant fear that a parent who lost a child from the corporation's actions, coming to take an eye for an eye. No amount of wealth can protect you from EVERYONE.

The thing that galls me the most about the wreck is that the basic cause -- an axle on a car overheating and breaking while moving -- is one of the oldest problems in railroading. It's one of the reasons they had a caboose back in the day -- for someone to watch out for "hotboxes." It's something they absolutely know how to handle by this point; they just cared more about making money.

Here in Norway, nurses have been barred from striking for years without any increase in salary to compensate for inflation. Guess what we have now? A shortage of nurses, who woulda thunk. And the dipshit politicians keep pushing for it as this amazing job when it's a lengthy education for high stress low pay. And the same might happen to the teachers now that they too got recently barred from striking. A ton of students have moved over to other studies. Probably not long until we got a teacher shortage as well. Denying employees the right to strike is in the long run damaging to both the profession and the local communities. It's tyranny. While I believe we do a lot of things right, I am seeing things slowly getting worse and it is why I do not vote for any of the mainstream political parties anymore. They are all in varying degrees part of the problem.

You mean state government .... right? Because I can tell you that republicans will fight against any government overreach such as regulations. To republicans, regulations are evil. " The rail unions are headed toward a strike over pay and ongoing grievances from members that the working conditions are grueling, and not conducive to a life off the job. The schedules are of particular concern with rail workers citing a lack of sick leave, inability to routinely visit the doctor or tend to family emergencies, and weekslong stretches of being on call. " USA Today, Anna Kaufman, Congress steps to avert impending rail strike at Biden's ask. What do the rail workers want? Sept. 15, 2022 I think conservatives and leftists (we've gone full horseshoe) are lying a lot to make the right look better than they are and to demonize the innocent left. In point of fact, except for sick leave, I'm pretty sure these union workers got their pay raise. And they would have gotten the sick leave but a majority, no... an OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of republicans in Congress voted AGAINST sick leave for these railroad workers. Biden called DeWine. DeWine rejected the offer of aid. Vance didn't bother to ask for help. The EPA - the only federal agency that actually has relevance considering the chemicals and environment, they were on the scene. FEMA is for buildings damaged and things like that. This was just a train derailment and I don't recall coverage of any houses being destroyed or any such property. Besides, DeWine would have had to declare a state emergency. I wonder why he didn't. also... here's my bigger problem. Buttigieg is being blamed. Biden is being blamed. Trump overturned Obama's regulations. What's to stop the next republican from canceling any Biden rules? Isn't it just performance art to demand that Buttigieg look like he's doing some work that we all know that republicans are going to overturn in the next few years? Why are we wasting our time on this game? Remember that an overwhelming majority of republicans voted against sick leave for these railroad union workers. Also, remember that E. Palestine voted for republican legislators who failed them. Ohio legislature is mostly republican... and what have they done? Besides... I'm okay with the union busting. Here's why. It's something the republicans should love. We can't just shut down the economy for the union. (I mean, isn't that what the republican politician from TX said when we were working at trying to stop Covid from spreading and endangering American lives? Something something grandma would be happy to die for the economy.) In addition, it would have been a nightmare. Food shortages. I understand that republican voters in E. Palestine don't care if a black baby is starving because the baby formula didn't get to the local supermarket but I care. And I understand that republican voters in E. Palestine don't care if Juan, the Mexican immigrant, can't find food because our stores operate a just in time system. But I care. I just don't care about E. Palestine. Maybe they should ask their republican elected legislators to do something rather than asking for Democrats to fix republican mistakes ... again.

"compensated appropriately" There is NO compensation which could ever be considered "appropriately" No amount of money will bring back the people's health. A few years from now the amount of people dying from respiratory diseases in this region WILL SKYROCKET! No amount of money will ever bring back the destroyed and killed wildlife. No amount of money will ever clear those chemicals from the ground water. There just is no compensation possible. And those companies KNOW that. They gladly pay a few thousand bucks, a few million bucks if necessary. This all dwarfs the profits people like Alan H Shaw (CEO of Norfolk Southern) make. He's worth 10.8 million AT LEAST. He laughs about any possible compensation he might have to pay. And let's be honest here, he won't ever have to do that. Some corrupt court will decide that the people of East Palestine should have known this could happen before their family moved there 250 years ago. So actually, it's the fault of the people living there and they should be thankful they don't have to pay Norfolk Southern for missed out peofits caused by this derailment.

While watching this it reminded me of a train crash we had in Greece a couple months ago, with frightening similarity. Two trains collided head-on due to a lack of advanced monitoring systems, leading to 57 deaths. Most being university students returning to their hometown. Workers have been trying to make public the lack of safety in the railroad system but always ignored, their strikes always seen as just an inconvenience to public transport. Multiple people have been laid off in the past years after the railroad was sold to a private company. The minister of public safety was directly confronted about the safety of the railroad while on broadcast A WEEK BEFORE the accident. His response? He was offended someone even voiced these concerned and asked them to apologise... It's truly heartbreaking how corporations can treat human lives with such little regard. These people want to consider disasters like this the cost of doing business and then financially ram legislation down our throats to back said actions. How about real costs? Forced to clean up, contain and monitor the disaster is literally just the first reasonable step. I think legally they should be responsible for reimbursing every single resident the amount of all of their possessions and (if desired) purchase their home at pre-disaster market price. Every one of the E.P. residents should be able to relocate and restart if they want to on the company's dollar. If you are a fortune 500 company and think destroying entire communities is the cost of doing business, then these are just some of the real costs. (F*ck $25,000.) If they own a massive financial loss ghost town afterward, so be it. "Taken together, the value of all residential real estate in the town adds up to about $380 million, including single family homes and multi-family properties." (That quote is from an ABC article, not claiming I have vetted it for accuracy but it is way higher than 25,000 to say the least. If you have functionally ruined people's faith in the stability and safety of a community you are responsible for the fall-out afterward, potentially including mass-exodus. If we ever saw realistic financial penalties on these institutions after worst-case-scenarios, we could just watch how quickly they would decide it prudent to upgrade systems and brakes on all their trains etc. The biggest issue is that they have control from both directions simultaneously and a large grasp on the take of mainstream media. That's why you have Buttigieg going on air to talk about Chinese weather balloon with the corporate distraction battalion while we watch "Breaking News" of the disaster on the same day with various youtube personalities and viral online smartphone footage. There is literally an entire American town of people wondering if their town is safe to live in and the every mainstream news network (including you FOX, despite your hypocritical meanderings of ignoring conservative white plight) is deciding it best to cover the story as its approaching 2 weeks old? The whole situation from lobbied and reduced regulation, to pitiful compensation and causal explanation, to finally absolute failure to functionally inform the local and national populace is just so transparent and disgusting it makes me sick. I feel terrible for anyone in or near the community. I wish this was the end for PSR in general. We should never forget that the rail workers all protested (over pay, time off and safety among other things) and they were forcibly sent back to work w/o their desired systematic adjustments, in the same time-span that the large rail companies laid off a 3rd of their workforce and issued record stock buybacks. I feel terrible for all these people and I hope to see some change come from this tragedy.

I worked for the Australian branch of Eurofins, the company that did the analytical chemistry to test the samples, and it's nice to have a reminder of why my day to day work meant something. I've since left as I was getting tired of occasionally getting contaminated concentrated acid on myself and breathing in low levels of toxic/caustic/carcinogenic gases on the daily. It was really fun handling elemental heavy metals and highly concentrated acids for a job though. Safety regulations are written in blood. Remember that every time that doing things by the book seems pedantic, or when investing in employee safety (like a fume hood that doesn't suffer occasional containment breaches, for example) seems too expensive. I've coughed a little blood a couple of times after inhaling spicy air at work.

Thank you for the coverage of this disaster, JT. Thank you also for pointing out that it's far from the first of its kind - solidarity to any and all communities that have gone through or are going through catastrophes like this. Such disasters shouldn't be "memoryholed," and the underlying economic structures and incentives that foment the ever-growing amount of them need to remain in the public dialogue. Your work is extremely important!

There was a similar incident in Bulgaria some time ago, a train loaded with explosive toxic chemicals derailed in a small town. Its a miracle it didn't leak or explode, even when it caught on fire.

Jt thank you for this video. In Greece we had a tragic incident where 2 trains collided. One of the two was a cargo train but the other one had many passengers. As of now 62 people have died and 50 more are missing but presumed dead. Companies will always put costs/benefit balance above human lives. All this death and tragedy could have been prevented had the company and the government listened to the many pleas and strikes of railworkers. The tragic irony is that at the 7th of February the railworkers announced that there is a very high risk of trains colliding due to the lack of guiding systems or even GPS sytems on the trains. On the 1st of March the tragedy happened.

It's so angering that those people's dead relatives are seen as nothing more than dollar signs to the train companies; they're acceptable collateral to some assholes' net worth being a little bit higher. Just disgusting!

Your call to nationalize the rail industry is inspiring. I wish more people thought and felt this way because there are other industries that should be as well such as energy production and pharmaceuticals

I'm an atmospheric chemist. This disaster was horrendous and the government's response is shameful. I think it is also important to raise awareness for air pollution in general. Coal combustion kills 8 million people each and every year. Like East Palestine, coal combustion is continued in developed countries due to corporate greed and governmental negligence. We need to put pressure on governments to take air quality much more seriously and protect ourselves, our children, and our environment. We only have one earth.

Ohioan here, been a fan since you did the general science videos (loved those by the way, they did help me come up with ideas for my world-building as a sci-fi writer, your new videos actually still do). Before this incident in East Palestine I didn't know how common these train wrecks were, so I might as well share my small story. Back in 2019 there was a very minor derailment outside my apartment here actually. As far as I know nobody was hurt, and the entire town smelled of spoiled onions for a week. If this train had crashed only a hundred meters or so further down the track it easily could have gone straight into my apartment, it was close enough that I could feel the room shake briefly while I was showering and it wrecked. While everything was fine this time, I do keep a gas mask in my apartment now just in case anything like that happens again (which, after this video, seems to be the right call). I'm curious how many people who live so close to the tracks might be doing something similar now.
