Two Aliens Two aliens landed in the Arizona desert near a gas station that was closed for the night. They approached one of the gas pumps and the younger alien addressed it saying, "Greetings, Earthling. We come in peace. Take us to your leader." The gas pump, of course, didn't respond. The younger alien became angry at the lack of response. The older alien said, 'I'd calm down if I were you.' The younger alien ignored the warning and repeated his greeting. Again, there was no response. Pissed at the pump's haughty attitude, he drew his ray gun and said gruffly, "Greetings, Earthling. We come in peace. Take us to your leader or I will fire!" The older alien again warned his comrade saying, 'You probably don't want to do that! I really think that will make him mad.' 'Rubbish,' replied the cocky, young alien. He aimed his weapon and opened fire. There was a huge explosion. A massive fireball roared towards him and blew the younger alien off his feet and threw him in a burnt, smoking mess about 200 yards away in a cactus patch. Half an hour passed. When he finally regained consciousness, he refocused his three eyes, straightened his bent antenna, and looked dazedly at the older, wiser alien who was standing over him shaking his big, green head. 'What a ferocious creature!' exclaimed the young, fried alien. 'He damn near killed me! How did you know he was so dangerous?' The older alien leaned over, placed a friendly feeler on his crispy friend and replied, 'If there's one thing I've learned during my intergalactic travels, you never mess with a guy who can loop his pen!s over his shoulder twice and then stick it in his ear.'

Well, I think that for evolution to develop an intelligent being capable to communicate with us, and maybe with advanced technology like us, it has to be adapted to certain pressures that require lots of mental processing and a big brain. For non-aquatic beings, moving through branches in a position of hunter and also prey would be the ideal, because it would force also social behavior and, with some extra pressures, tool making. So, for that, the alien must have at least, complex eyes and limbs, so they would have, at least, some kind of visual language, body language or some kind of colour and image display or bioluminicence (I think body language would be the most probable being the easier to develop). Before anything else, the best thing would be to observe the alien interacting with peers to see if they have some kind of communication and which. If that's not possible, gestures, pointing at things etc, would be the first thing to try. Being prey, ears are essential, so they would be able to recognize sound. Trying to make them imitate you and making simple sounds like vowels and some consonants, to see their limitations, if they have a system to produce sound at all. After all that and having engaged some basic communication, to have his name I think the easiest thing would be to, point a picture of "humans", and see if they can learn that word, and a picture of his kind (in a picture) to see his word or gesture for their species. Repeat the process with a single individual "generic human" and "generic alien". And finally point to people individually in the room and call them all humans, and later use his specific names to show the alien the difference between of generic human and specific human names, and then point to the alien or some of their peers to see if he catches the idea and gives their individual names.

'Name' can mean two things. Either the term an individual is referred or the broad label applied to a category or lineage. Your own name likely has two components, a personal identifier and clan label. The best way to find out an alien's name is to take these two things into regard, and inquire on whether they consider physical and temporal limitations the scope of there individuality.

Hey @NameExplain that frequency range isn’t quite right for human communication. That’s just a range for fundamental frequencies, and actually just for men. Sibilant sounds can get near the top end of our hearing and even formant frequencies for vowel sounds get into the thousands of hertz. Also fundamental frequencies are actually the least important in terms of intelligibility.

@Roxor128
@Roxor128 5 жыл бұрын
If we made contact with aliens, chances are it's not our spoken languages we'd be translating first, but our computer languages. If you're sending a radio signal to establish communications with a species you know has electronics, you're going to encode it in a way that's pretty obvious how the data is encoded. For example, you might use carrier signal plus 1000Hz for a 0 and carrier plus 2000Hz for a 1 (frequency-shift keying). Looking at a frequency representation of the signal is going to make it pretty obvious that you're sending some form of data with two states. Hell, if the data rate is low enough, you could just put it through a speaker and hear it's using two frequencies. Okay, so now your recipient knows you're sending them binary data of some sort. What can you send that's easy to turn into something recognisable? How about a 1-bit image? Send a few bits to encode the image size, say a 16-bit value encoding "256", a second one encoding "128", and then 32768 bits of the image data. They look at the length of the message and see it comes out to 16+16+32768 bits in size, then start looking through it and spot the bit patterns at the start for 256 and 128, or their inversions if they assumed the high frequency was for 0, rather than 1. Finding two 16-bit numbers that multiply to give the size of the rest of the data could be enough of a clue for them to figure out they're getting an image from you. Once they've got that down, you can use images to convey more complex ideas, including the structure of more sophisticated protocols.

What most people think is that aliens would be so advanced if they’re out there, but nobody dares to think what if most aliens have the dilemma of us? What if they’re starting in the Stone Age.

I would hope that any space-faring alien worth his salt, would do a bit of studying on us humans and the planet we inhabit before landing. Chances are good that they'd be able to whip up a translator if needed. A quote from the Vulcan, Tuvak, comes to mind, "Sensors." ;)

I'm surprised you didn't bring up using scientific principles to communicate with aliens. If we are certain to share anything, its math and science. Using this as our common reference point, we can build off of it and eventually get to the concept of a name. One way I could foresee is going into how we understand evolution works, then going through species classification down to the concept of a single individual.

I mean... How do we even know that if they had a name we would be able to hear it? What if their communication frequency is outside our range of hearing?
