Over the last year I have been very vocal on the bleak future of LEGO themes that happen to be both unlicensed/non-licensed and non-evergreen. Today though, we discover at least ONE of the culprits behind this change... LEGO Creator. This is the story of How Creator Killed Off LEGO's Classic Themes

I defintely agree that some of LEGO's greatest themes like castle and pirates are very far from their former glory. What I would give to see sets again like those in the 80s and 90s, with lots of minifigures and tons of factions

I beg to differ that LEGO has diminished Castle, Space and Pirates. In my opinion, these themes were demolished because of licensed themes such as Lord of the Rings / The Hobbits, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter and of course, Star Wars. When LEGO released Space sets after 1978, there were examples of people building them into Star Wars vehicles after the hype of the Original Trilogy. In terms of design, LEGO finds it redundant to have 2 castle-like themes on shelves, or 2 pirates-like themes on shelves, or 2 space-like themes on shelves when one has more wide appeal, typically the licensed ones. And sadly as time marches on, the less they produce original themes like Galaxy Squad, Forestmen, or 2009 Pirates, the less people will choose them when they know licensed ones can be made. LEGO has been in a drought for the classic trio for a long time, and their resurgences fallen under the radar, but in my opinion, Creator is EXACTLY the way to reignite interest in them. For the past 3 years, they have guaranteed us a castle set, a pirates set, and a vikings set that otherwise would be left forgotten. Which each set being a 3-in-1, it provides enough opportunity to make multiple models to expand each main build, and with the same parts. This is nothing new for Creator, as they've done this in the past for train sets in order to provide a locomotive and passenger car and sometimes a caboose as 3 models in the same set. The 2017 dinosaur set that is still on shelves offers 4 models from its pieces to make 4 different types of dinosaurs (1 is an online instruction). But I also understand that an entire theme cannot be packaged into one singular retail box, and I would enjoy the original world-building of classic themes again. I would hope that sales of the Creator 3-in-1 classic sets would prompt interest into making a full theme again for castle and space minimum, vikings is more difficult but not impossible as it has been done before.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, Joey. I don't really have much to say except thank you for this great comment. You're right, these sets do provide fans with 3 castle builds, 3 pirate builds, and 3 vikings builds. Sure, it isn't a theme, but it's better than nothing. And who knows? LEGO probably knows that these properties are not returning anytime soon, so this is the next best thing.

These sets being released under Creator isn't the cause of the themes' absence, it's a symptom. Corporate probably decided against releasing full themes for one reason or another and the designers decided to make these Creator sets as a sort of consolation prize for fans. Also Castle has been undergoing a pretty big revival as an adult-oriented reboot of Classic Castle. The Lion Knights, Black Falcons, and Forestmen have all made grand returns, even if it isn't in full themes.

"Generic" themes like Castle or Pirates are far more beneficial to children, the primary demographic of Lego, because of one key feature: the room the themes leave for imagination and play. Sure, themes like Star Wars or the Superheroes lines allow for it with characters beloved by all sorts- but there isn't much room for customization. I remember creating entire worlds and characters using such themes as a base when I was a kid, but I don't think that's really possible with what's been shipped out over the past ten years.

From my perspective, Lego Ninjago has absorbed all original story themes (like Exo Force), City has absorbed all exploration themes (such as arctic, underwater, mining, and space) ad well as licensed sets taking the rest. Creator is the only way that Lego can release these classic themes as make money, because they simply don’t make money as they used to.

I have to agree with other commenters. It's a pity that you blame Lego's last pure theme (Creator 3 in 1) for the demise of other classic themes. It's the last theme that provided us with original ideas and alternative builds, both core elements of Lego. If anything, licensing is to blame for this. It has sucked the soul out of Lego for the past 20 years, reducing it to unimaginative, expensive merchandise, and it is getting worse every year.

I grew up with lego Kingdoms (2010-2012) and I LOVED it, I genuinely think it’s Lego’s best castle theme, it had a great colour dynamic and the box art is BEAUTIFUL!!!!, it had everything, civilians, A simple story, and great sets, I didn’t have a connection with pirates unfortunately:( Personally I love the 3n1 castle ( since I can afford it ) but it’s just not the same as things were once before, there’s no battle packs, being able to get knights for cheap/cheaper ways is always good. I know maybe those castle themes didn’t sell AMAZING! But there’s still many many fans, the lion knights castle alone is bringing in knew fans. Simply put give us a wave of 7 castle sets that is all I ask lol I also agree with Maniac, Licensed themes have killed original ones ( I think Ninjago is also to blame somewhat ) have a good day Mate!
@OurToyWorld
@OurToyWorld Жыл бұрын
Kingdoms was such a great line. A great contrast between heroes and villains, nothing too cheesy, quality sets, the potential to army build. Realistic, but at the same time still had a fantasy element to it. That could very well be the best LEGO Castle line ever. Sucks that it lasted a few years only to be replaced by some mid. (Sorry Castle 2013) I'm like you in the fact that I like the 3in1 Castle, I really do. Unlike the Pirate ship or Viking ship which retail for $120 (what are you thinking LEGO), the Castle is a solid build and the $100 price tag is more than fair. But I want a Castle THEME. Yeah, 2013 might've flopped, but that's cause 2013 sucked. Again, you and I both agree they had something great going with Kingdoms, could've easily done a soft reboot of that line instead of throwing it all away.

@@nwut for the lack of original themes? This is a backwards way of looking at things, and I don't mean "backwards" as an insult. Saying that Creator "killed" or "replaced" the classic themes is a mentality that is very much looking at what we know now and coming to conclusions based on that. Creator didn't "kill" these themes; they ended themselves when they stopped being as profitable as they needed to be in one way or another. If anything, Creator is reviving these themes by having sets that pay tribute to them. It's not as if there's a boardroom meeting saying "We can have a Creator Castle or we can have a new full Castle theme", it's "We can have a Creator Castle or we can have nothing". Now I would love to see both of these themes come back, but if we're going to discuss it, we should be honest about how this stuff actually works and come up with ideas from there instead of making a simplified narrative with an easy solution. Additionally, not to be mean, but maybe consider changing your editing choices. Every word you say popping up on screen, 1 to 2 words at a time is a bit obnoxious.
@OurToyWorld
@OurToyWorld Жыл бұрын
You make a good point. LEGO knows these properties aren't returning anytime soon. They don't fit in with the company's goals it now has for unlicensed themes. And also, sorry about the editing, I don't like editing videos that way myself but it increases viewer engagement and helps place my videos in the algorithm.

Not only it is nostalgic, not only is one of most famous themes, not only it is opportunity for different sets (vehicules, buildings, ruins, huge creatures), not only it can give us a lot of varietys (new corners of the world, characters, villains, storys) but also it is great material for tv show.

Adventurers is great, but I doubt we'll ever see another line like it. It was LEGO's Indiana Jones before they got Indiana Jones in 2008... and with them producing sets for the new movie next year, Adventurers won't be returning anytime soon. Sucks though. It was a great line, and while Pharaoh's Quest rebooted the Egyptian element of the line, there was no reboot for the South American or Eastern arcs.

The problem with Adventurers was the "Pharaoh's Quest" line. It was short lived and shot itself in the foot being a single run theme. Had they called it "The New Adventurers" and set it in the 50's, you could have branched out to other themes like the Jungle or the Orient or whatever.

I blame licensed themes and Ninjago moreso than Creator. Look at the last few years. Want a Tron/reboot-esque video game theme? Make it Ninjago. A tabletop RPG castle setting? Make it Ninjago. Islanders? Ninjago. Underwater? Ninjago. Ninjago has absorbed adventure themes that would've had their own aesthetic and characters years ago. I'm surprised there isn't a pirate wave in there. Maybe they're still getting to it. Heck, even city has absorbed a few things. Instead of another Rock Raiders/Power Miners theme, we get a City mining sub theme. As for licensed themes, a lot of the classic original themes we like were just Lego's "ripoffs" before they could get the licenses. Classic space is just Star Wars and Star Trek. Adventurers is Indiana Jones. Now that they HAVE those licenses, why bother with their own version? Personally... I'm thankful for Creator. Creator is the compromise, it's the closest we'll ever come to seeing those themes proper again, and it's nice of the designers put so much care into the secondary and tertiary builds that you can in effect build a proxy wave by getting multiples.

As somebody born in 99 i will say that i grew up with some of the best and original lego themes and sets. I could say my generation got spoiled with amazing sets. When i was very young we got the orient expedition sets. A bit later we got the lego exo-force sets, which were amazing to play with as the exo suits fit nicely with for example the bionicles of that era. Not too long after we got the lego castle, which was and still is my favorite theme. Followed up by themes like lego agents, space police, mars mission, power miners, atlantis and ninjago. This doesnt even cover a lot of the city related stuff and other (licensed) themes, but it was just to name a few. I feel however that the amount of new/unique themes such as these, has decreased a lot for some years now. Lego has delivered nice sets over the years dont get me wrong, but it doesnt feel the same as for example the 00s. Please forgive some spelling/grammar mistakes, english isn't my first language

To me it seems like lego is just testing the waters before dropping a full castle or pirate theme. It's been shown in the past that if a set sells well enough it can be spun into its own theme. This is the case with minecraft and sonic, which both got their own themes after successful ideas sets. Considering how castle and pirates have failed in the past, this seems smarter than just dropping a full 7 set wave out of nowhere. With ninjago being rebooted this year its the perfect time for them to bring back more original themes.

I beg to differ. The lego 3 in 1 Creator pirate ship was actually genius. Lego released a single set but actually released an entire pirate range. We had Barracuda Bay in 2020. For those that built the ship, the island was left over. Lego brought out the creator 3 in 1 and BOOM, you have the option to build an Inn, and place it on the island. If you left Barracuda Bay as the island, you had the option to add 'skull island' build from the creator set as an addition. If you built the pirate ship, you can leave Barracuda Bay as an island ship wreck and still have a decent ship. But I believe lego wanted fans to buy THREE Creator sets and make all 3 builds. Therefore, you have 4 or 5 pirate themed sets from 2 purchases. Very clever, except for the replication of minifigures, but those can be swapped around to prevent duplicates.

If they were to go on-line only, I would be open to the idea of them reissuing long out of print sets, maybe with updated features and build techniques. I, for one, only managed a few small sets of any one thing in the 90s, missed out entirely on a lot of things in the early aughts, and would love to go back and fill in the gaps, or army build. For instance, I'm a Black Knights fan. I have all of three sets from the collection, though. It would be nice to fill in there, as none of those sets are an actual castle build. Something else I remember from the classic castle and space lines were the modularity. Castle especially had portion sets that could link together with multiple versions of it self to make a bigger whole, as well as little add-on portions to add flavor. But, someone reviewing the Futuron Space line pointed out a missed opportunity with specialty pods kitted for different tasks for their space vehicles. I'd love to see THAT, too. And, with a lot of the new Ball/Socket parts available, they could revisit some of the droic/bots/mech builds and give them much more poseability.

I wish lego would make more "Classic" branded sets like theyve been doing these last couple years but in smaller set forms. The classic space ship and classic castle set they released this / last year are amazing and I want more modern day normal sets that just have good ol classic simple faced yellow minifigs. The vibe of classic themes and especially the look of the classic minifig face and torso prints just look so simple and well done / all you need imo. Classic sets are simple and feel inspiring in a way, modern sets feel really cluttered and busy, full of special or complex molds and prints. I was born in 2000, I grew up with bionicle from about 2005 as a child until its end, I was maybe 8 when Pirates 2 was out and although my parents couldnt afford much lego (and when i did get anything it was bionicle) I have good memories of looking at the lego pirates sets at Barnes and Nobles wishing I could get one (Even the cheapest small sets). me and my brothers were also given our dads legos from when he was a kid which contained SO many legos, parts, and minifigs from classic space and classic pirates and I just LOVED the simplicity and vibe of those sets, the minifigs, the box art, etc. (they just look SO good even on the new "Classic" adult sets released last year). I know many didnt LOVE pirates 2009, and even though I really wanted the sets I didnt love it to the degree I liked the older version because it just didnt have the same vibe or look. the same went for Bionicle when they rebooted it. They stripped it of the dark tone / vibe which was a KEY part in making the lore good and "cool" to kids, and the villians were just terrible, boring, unrememberable as sets, etc. I did kind of like how most of the first Toa wave sets looked, but the second toa wave / the G2 toa "nuva" did NOT look good imo. I feel like I havent REALLY enjoyed a classic lego theme since when ninjago released up to the snakes series, Monster Fighters, and Power Miners (which was my probably my second favorite line growing up aside from bionicle) and I know many people feel the same. I find it hard imaging what kind of lego modern day kids are growing up with given its pretty much all liscensed stuff :/

But I am a kid and I want to play with Lego but if is spent a month saving up for a new castle or a pirate ship for it to come with 3 minifigs and no small set like the classic wave that I can by to build a army. I’d argue that the problem stems from the corporate IPs rather than Creator as the corporate IPs effectively ended all of their in-house lines. Take their Space line as a good example. We’ve barely had anything for it because why buy space when you can buy Star Wars? They even tried to do a small revival of the theme in the late 2000’s, but that ended without much success. It’s the same with Pirates. It’s no coincidence that it magically stopped around the time LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean came out… The in-house themes that have continued, though, are ones without any corporate theme such as LEGO City, which has nothing comparable to it and, as a result, persists to this day.

For me, I've never been too worried about the castle and pirates theme being introduced into the 'Creators' line of sets and think it can be a good thing for a few reasons. Consumer interests have changed since the themes were first introduced and while there will always be a fanbase for these themes. General consumers may like different themes inside LEGO or outside with a different product. I believe that LEGO introduces Castle and Pirates into Creator as a way of 'Market research' to gauge audience interest and if a set/theme does well then they can justify allocating a larger budget towards a whole theme instead of a single set. Also having a familiar theme keeps returning LEGO fans, as they are more likely to buy the set as it's a theme that they are familiar with. Either that's with them remembering it from their childhood or some other reason. LEGO now is a far different company than it was pre 2000's and their attitudes have changed in order to survive in the current toy market. Creator/IDEAS allows these themes to be given a second chance that they may not have been given otherwise, so for me LEGO are doing a good job and the sets seem successful, otherwise they wouldn't of greenlit a second Pirates themed set Eldorado Fortress.

I don’t agree with your opinion. We just need minifigures and accessories for factions available as battle packs or just on Pick a Brick. The 3 in 1 Creator series is a great idea and they should release another castle in this series with a different faction. Many of the smaller builds in castle are just not that great in design. A 3 in 1 can incorporate those not so great small builds. The minifigures and accessories are really what is important! We need more medieval mini upper and mini lower designs with accessories (weapons, shields, streamers, etc.)

I guess the main issue with the older themes is that the reboots just didn't sell enough, and failed to get the interest of modern kids. Hence, shoutouts in Creator and occasional Direct-To-Customer sets would be deemed economically feasible, a full-blown theme would not...

Definitely contributes to the problem. When I look at the online lego shop, I browse by theme. No Castle/Viking/Space? I don't look further. Turns out the space/castle stuff gets hidden away in City and Creator, meaning those who WANT the stuff aren't being directed to it. And also, I'm sick of Licensed themes. I don't care how much money it makes, people aren't buying licensed lego because it's lego, they're buying it because of the license. The most I can do with licensed sets - aside from pay more than normal - is part them out for MOCs, but then I'm saddled with license-specific printed bricks, stickers, and flesh minifigures. Castle, Space and Pirates need to return. Even if they don't release LOADS of these sets, they should just maintain a relatively "okay" stock that can last them for years of sales. Offer them as cheaper alternatives to the licensed themes. Yes, it eats into the same market, but people will choose which they prefer. I want my classic themes back, because I'm a bit tired of my only "own-brand" license options these days being City.

At this point, Creator is probably going to be the only way those themes could really exist in any real capacity, mostly given how licensed properties sell so much better than their classic themes. I see Creator less as replacing the themes that came before but rather being a way for them to still actually be made, just under the Creator name, just because it's not economically viable to keep certain themes on the shelf, especially when those themes clash with licensed themes. I see another problem holding these themes back from revival is Ninjago. Ninjago was a complete surprise that has become one of their best and longest-running themes ever. Not only that, but it’s also spawned shows, games, movies, and other merchandise. LEGO clearly wants to capture that lightning in a bottle again, and we’ve seen obvious imitative attempts with themes such as Chima, Nexo Knights, and Monkey Kid. When the various themes harkened back to stories that were common to childhoods of multiple previous generations. Lego has to think about it's future and the next generations of Lego Fans, these classic themes are the last vestiges of a common childhood that has not been corrupted by TikTok and the iPhone. Is it sad that Space, Wild West, Pirates are disappearing? Yes, but Lego cannot remain stagnant in it's themes just to placate the AFOL's who grew up with these themes 20 years ago.

Hot take: There a LOT of creator sets released each year; and unfortunately for castle, pirates & Space they are sort of fighting for the same place as LotR/Harry Potter, Pirates of the Carribean and Star Wars within Legos setup of themes. So my suggestion is this: Every year dedicate a certain amount of creator sets to the classic themes of Castle, Pirates & Space. Maybe 3 sets each? (based on how many creator sets are released each year. Apparently 900+ sets are released annually across all themes, not sure how many of those are creator). This would grant 9 builds (3 for each box) for each theme but shouldn't overly compete with the big names like Star Wars or Harry Potter.

Absolutely. After the 2013 theme came out, I promised my then 11 year old self I’d buy myself the entire next Castle theme that came out. And then I waited. And waited. And am still waiting. It’s despicable.

So Lego canceling Castle, and then releasing an unrelated medieval set 8 years later is linked? Lego very obviously isn't absorbing their classic themes into the Creator line, they're using the creator line to test the waters. It's just safer for them to do that with the creator line, rather than create a whole new theme. It seems like the castle just didn't do well enough for them to justify making an entire theme. Another issue with these classic themes is that really only adults care about them. They aren't marketing to people who read up about all the new sets that come out before they release, they're marketing to the children. And most children will see a set on shelves and ask their parents for it. Getting upset that a children's toy company is making toys for children and not adults is just silly.

I would say, the real thing that killed lego’s classic themes were ninjago, and licensed themes.

The choice was never Creator or Classic reboot. It was Creator or nothing. Companies don't create unprofitable products or repeat failures. Fans didn't show up for Blacksmith or Barracuda Bay. Kids weren't interested and adults bought small numbers. Lego didn't kill the themes, consumers did. I'm just glad they actually release these one off classic sets. At least I can buy 4 of them and do some custom builds, and order dozens of army building figures from Bricks and Pieces. Without these sets, the Lego medieval Renaissance would have never happened. It's kinda sad that the price of many of the collectible minifigure series knights have gone through the roof since options are so limited, but the community would have never gone on a medieval binge if not for that Creator 3-in-1 castle set.
