This is why we need to topple Crunchyroll and get everyone who actually cares about the market to stop relying on them. With them first being in the market via pirate streaming, I would assume they would know that to keep people, you have to provide a quality product. They used to back in the early days, but they don't anymore.

Convenience. At least, that's my reason. There's HiDIVE, but Crunchyroll offers most of the seasonal line-up, save for a few. Everything else ends up on Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, etc, but I digress. You're not wrong. I get paid to watch English Dub Anime for a Review website and they don't always bother to translate when it's necessary for certain scenes involving Subs such as characters exchanging text messages, signs in the scenery, or differernt languages spoken outside of english. (For instance, certain characters in Golden Kamuy are capable of speaking in Russian and despite the Dub having characters accurately speak it, it's not English subbed for anyone to understand. You'd have to turn on the sub with the Dub just to fill in those particular story gaps.)

another justification for piracy - this just happens less with fansubs, which is very sad to say. Literally every platform nowadays just screams "pirate my content instead - it's better over there". Especially netflix with their DRM forcing you to use a specific browser with a specific monitor, HDMI cable & CPU in order to watch in 4K. Or forcing you to own a SmartTV that spies on you instead of just letting you watch high resolution on any TV.

most piracy sites use official subs over fansubs though. that might change if crunchyroll subs become consistently shitty, but thats not really the case. Most of them are perfectly fine in quality its just the outliers like this. that and fan translators usually focus on untranslated works over ones that already have official translations. so there simply arent that many fansubs for officially translated works piracy doesnt really solve this problem.

@@antoniolopez1135 Different translators have different priorities, I guess, not to mention preferences. Leaving it in Celsius/Centigrade is a valid choice for the translation, but so is converting it to the scale used by the target audience (in the end, the goal is for subtitles to be as unobtrusive as possible, the viewer should be able to read the subtitles quickly, understand them quickly, and then look at to the main video quickly to focus on what’s actually happening on screen, and different translators will try to achieve this in different ways). I don’t have a natural “feeling” for Fahrenheit, having not grown up with it, so “50-something °F” has no real meaning for me, but that means I can understand how the same is true for ℃ for some people - and the number of people who need to pause the video to look something up should always be the minority, or the subtitles aren’t doing their job. Personally I am with you on wanting ℃ in the subtitles, but I don’t think I was the intended audience the translator was thinking of when they wrote this. And, as I wrote elsewhere, I don’t even get English subtitles for this show where I am, so I have to make do without them.

Many, many times, having workers hate the medium they work with, including the fans who literally pay them.

Not to come to Crunchyroll’s defence, but this video misses the fact that there’s two types of subtitles on Crunchyroll - subtitles done in house, and those provided by the licensor. The easiest way to differentiate between the two is that the subtitle font is different, and in house subs also have typesetting. In the case of Nokotan and DDD, both the subtitles and dubs were provided by the licensor, so for DDD you have you have Ocean Productions to blame for the poor viewing experience as they were contracted by the licensor to dub and sub it (or dubtitle in this case). CR just has to use what they’re provided with.

Shokono Nokonko Koshitan was actually AI translated, and it is better than what localisers are doing. As for DDD, the subtitles are also a problem because localisers inserted their own politics into it. It isn't the only anime this season ruined by localisation, 2.5 Dimensional Seduction was too. Good fansubs are the best way to experience anime short of learning Japanese. Shikonoko Nokonko Koshitan has two release groups doing fan subs with lots of effort put into translation and formating, so releases usually take a week or two after air date. I am hoping that DDD and 2.5DS get good fansubs too.

However, due to the fact that most people are acustomued to waiting two days max to get their stuff due to simulcast, most fansubs nowadays are more concerned about speed and use MTLs or AI. Fuck, there are a lot of people who share your opinion about "wokalizers" and just use MTL to get a more accurate translation, according to them. That's bullshit. Sorry, bad bad quality should not be fighted with bad quality just because you throw a hissy fit if you see Z-Gen slang in an anime. We are not in the aughts anymore. The playing field has changed fundamentally too much and anime is not consumed the same manner it was 10 years ago. @TheShadowivan

@@night_fiend6 Ai is not a stopgap, is a scam that is being sold to corporations because is cheaper that hiring a translator and the people in charge does not give a fuck if the quality is good or not, especially since in America there is not that many companies involved in bringing animanga, thus no real competition. If you are okay with a bad translation just because it was a machine that did it and not someone with pronouns in their Twitter bio, i'm sorry, but you are too lost in the sauce. The solution would be either demand better translation without involving cultural wars, that way the excuse of "chuds are mad" is no longer valid, or as you say, just learn Japanese. And i say this because in my country, Spain, we have good translations and nothing is censored, so seeing the state of English translation compared to my country's is quite telling.

Crunchyroll isn't responsible for the translation, dubbing, or subtitling of D4. These were outsourced by the original production company, which is why english translations of text are cooked into the video itself. In addition, it gets better over the course of the series. The subtitles are the worst over the course of the first 2 episodes, including an entire part that isn't translated. Crunchyroll IS responsible for cutting the series up into episodes instead of movies, but thats it. Their miss with Shikonoko was releasing it several days after the actual air date initially. It encouraged pirating and fan-subbing in opposition to watching it legally.

The episodic version of DeDeDeDe hasn't been released in Japan yet. It wouldn't be on any of their seasonal charts. They only have the two movies. There's so much new material in the series cut that they're undoubtedly going to get it, but only after the rights holders have milked every yen out of the film version. Which is part of the problem. The show launched internationally midway through the spring season because it coincided with the second film's release in Japan. The TV cut was announced just days before it was released, presumably so it didn't undermine the Japanese boxoffice. However, that meant it wasn't part of the new season hype. It also meant that there was no weekly Japanese promo campaign to piggy back off of, as movie ads usually vanish off after the first 2 weeks unless it's a big hit. It being the second film meant the promo campaign was likely smaller anyway. Your argument isn't wrong, though, because DeDeDeDe wasn't a big hit in Japan. The first movie grossed 200 million yen, which is the equivalent to $1.3 million USD. That really isn't a lot of money for a movie. It doesn't seem to be a big hit in any other language either. It's only the English subtitled version that used the dub's captions. Everywhere else had a proper translation from the Japanese script from episode 0. Is DeDeDeDe more popular in those other languages? It doesn't seem like it. If anything, the botched rollout seems to have made it slightly more notable in the English world. Which sucks, because the show deserves to be known on its own merit, but not everything has mass-market appeal. Ironically, neither of these were Crunchyroll's fault. The dub and sub were provided by the Japanese rights holder, who presumably are the ones who also decided on the release pattern. The only thing you can blame them for is the zero international promo, but some of that might also be due to the Japanese rights holders.

That level of subtitle sloppiness wouldn't even be acceptable amongst fansubbers before Crunchyroll was a thing, let alone an official release. Only C or D tier fansubbers had mistakes that obvious, but they released quickly and translated by "ear". If the fansubbers got access to the script so they could translate before it aired, it would have been a totally different story. SURELY an official entity like Crunchyroll gets the scripts BEFORE IT AIRS?? That was the only way to defeat the fansubbers, and Crunchyroll did so and succeeded... but now that translation has fallen well below the standard, even crappier than the groups that competed against one another to release the best possible FREE product, just because they were fans of the product.
