Comparing numbers of deaths doesn't really mean anything at all. Not many people are killed by sharks each year, that doesn't make them not dangerous. Cows aren't usually dangerous, but they definitely can be, and it's therefore better to acknowledge the potential dangers and act appropriately, rather than just dismiss them as being perfectly safe to be around. You have to remember these animals can weigh over 700kg and would easily kill a human whether intentional or not.

The point was the importance of exposure, or for how long people are faced with a risk. Very few people are exposed to sharks and so naturally the number of deaths are lower, even if it's intuitive that there's a huge risk there. Compare that to car crashes where people are exposed to risk everyday, and so the number is absurdly high. In this situation, death by cows is an unlikely event because it's not a risk people encounter, but say you're in that situation, that risk will increase.

Was working as a post man many years ago. At my last post-box there was a field I had to drive past. There were many cows there. After I had delivered the mail I would always stop right beside the field to look at the cows. Whenever I did this they would always stop eating and stare at me. All of them. Creepy as hell.

It would be interesting to know what percentage of that tiny number of deaths associated with cattle in fields were triggered by confrontations between cows and dogs - I wouldn’t mind betting that the answer is almost all of them. Don't walk dogs in fields with cows or any meadow to be sure is best. Cows can get sick if dog poop gets into their food or water so people with dogs should avoid fields with cows or fields that are used to feed cows from at all times apart from the reason of the danger of charging cows. Neospora is a bacteria that can be in dog poop and if cows get sick with it there is a chance they abort their pregnancy.

You know why? The dog resembles a natural predator of cows (coyotes or wolves). I have cows, and one time I watched as one of them chased a coyote across the length of a 40 acre lot. The only thing that stopped her was a barb wire fence. But when it comes to people, she's pretty chill.

You have that a bit wrong, it's when the dog is on a lead that most people are injured as the cows try to get to the dog and walk over the human to do so. It's far safer to let the dog off the lead near cows - so long as it doesn't chase them and stays near the owner.

In the past 30 years I've been chased three times by cows. First time was around 1993 with a bunch of friends at night trying to get across a field to a party. The herd were sleeping in the middle of the field. They all stood up and followed us in the dark. Very intimidating as they formed an approaching wall. Some of us cut our legs on barbed wire scrambling over a fence to get away. Second time was in a field with lots of blind spots, brush, random bushes and no visibility in 2007. A woman walking a sheep dog had spooked a mother cow and calf. The field was on a steep slope and was L shaped. I reached the corner of the L and was about to ascend when the mothers horns appeared at the top of the slope followed by the smaller calf. They immediately charged. It was the same distance along the bottom of the L (hedge) to the style. As I approached the stile I could hear the hooves getting closer and aggressive snorting. I leapt over the stile in a diving motion. Had I tried to climb I would have been struck as the cow was definitely faster than me. What made it worse was that she was thumping her hooves on the ground and snorting aggressively before she eventually left. Terrifying. The third time was just two months ago- December 2021. A field of about twenty of this European imported breed (more aggressive and unpredictable apparently). I was walking my dog and calculated we would be able to make it to the stile half the way up the field as the cows were moving away to the other end of the field and if we were quiet they wouldn't hear us. Wrong. Got a third of the way up and was spotted. Before I knew it at least ten of them were stampeding towards us. There was no way we would reach the stile before them so I ducked into the adjoining field and for some reason they didn't figure to come after us. They just seemed to be crowding by the hedge and hadn't figured to enter the field we'd run into. A good thing as that field had high hedges and no easy exit. We'd have been cornered. Lesson learned. Three times now. This video, as nice as it is, would not be one I'd have made. The black and white traditional breed is more placid and domesticated. The new European breeds (black and brown colour) are bigger, more aggressive and unpredictable. This attack I recently experienced with my dog was in December - so it can happen anytime That's a fact. Be very careful. I'd actually suggest avoid them entirely.

Cattle approaching you doesn't necessarily mean they would've charged. Those black and brown ones were probably angus and while they can be aggressive, most of the time they are just curious. Freisian cows like the ones you see here are more docile but I've been charged by them lots more times then angus. I work in a slaughterhouse which is enclosed so it could be different than a field though.

as a matter of fact the “traditional black and white breed” is a continental breed and not British. they are calm because they are a dairy breed (used to handling and human interaction) while beef breeds (regardless of color) are mostly left to fend for themselves

I agree. I think the statistical comparison between baths and cows is an over generalisation. If aggravated, cows can and will charge whether or not there is a calf. A better video would be to explain what to do if really being chased or at least how not to aggravate cows I.e.,not going to walk too close to them anyway.

One of the best defenses against overly aggressive cows is a dark colored umbrella. Pop it open before them and they normally back off. Has worked for me often. They can be sneaky and move very quietly for an animal of such size. But, do keep an eye on them as they can take a fright and hurtle off in unexpected directions, like yours. FYI, they can run as fast as 25 miles per hour!

i’ve spent time around cattle since i was pretty much a baby, i turn 18 in 5 days and the one thing i’ve learned over the past 17-18 years is you’ll be fine as long as you stay out of their blind spots (directly in front and behind them), don’t get too close to mamas calf, keep ur toes out of the way, and you should be good!

Yet many notices where I live instruct walkers to let their dogs OFF the lead, should they be harassed by cattle. @@mehitabel1290 it is true and advised to let the dog off if you're going to be charged but many were already off the lead. An off leash dog may run away or straight towards the owner, you can't guarantee it. You can even find KZbin videos of dogs running up to cattle and the being chased and one with a n off leash dog latched into a cows neck. Another with a dog on a long line that was allowed to go under the fence to 'say hello' to the cows. It's not really surprising. Many dog owners are irresponsible when walking in the countryside. They never believe their dog will chase livestock so never put them on a lead. Others think it's fine to chase livestock because 'they're only playing'. You can find videos of the latter. There's a dog attack on sheep on average every day in the UK and 1 dog shot by a farmer for livestock worrying every week. And that's just sheep.

Unfortunately every time the NFU bring this up, walking groups shoot it down without actually listening to the arguments or proposals over 'their trying to steal our rights' Some farmers provide alternatives already but without the ability to enforce it, many ignore it and use the original route because 'it's my right'

Just have to keep as calm as possible, don't get between the mother and calf, behave as unthreatening as possible. Be aware of where the cows are in relation to you and keep moving towards your destination, giving them a good amount of space.

Bulls can be dangerous , milking cows can get you kicked and sometimes letting a cow get too comfortable with can be a slight risk. If cattle become pushy from hand feeding grain etc can cause them to possibly get pushy and maybe bump you causing one to fall. Over all cattle are relatively safe unless enclosed as you pointed out, especially wild ones enclosed.

I've never be scared of cows. especially since they already have a lot of human interaction with the farmer. They will come and inspect you but just read the herd. I would honestly say though you would need to really bother the herd. For them to chase you.

Cows are just curious. Most of they have considerable experience with people. Iv walked around cows all my life. If they have young with them I go round them. Bullocks tend to push boundaries abit and they can come across as abit threatening but they are just curious and playful. It's when there's a bull in the field you have to be careful or when there's young.

honestly, bulls are super chill outside of breeding season and they give a fair bit of warning. They'll start doing this weird lowing noise and shake their neck a few times while eyeing you down. If you back off they'll typically leave you alone after that. You just have to know how to speak their language. (source, there's a lot of free-range cattle near my house)

Very dangerous I was metal detecting 7 cows charged me I climbed on top of a dry stone wall one of the cows tried hitting its self against the wall while another run around to the other side of the wall , I had to jump down a 6ft drop onto a road to get away !! Once as a kid my sister and I were walking through a pasture and the cows followed us in a way that I thought was kind of threatening. To this day, I'm not sure if i was imagining this or not. It was one of the few times at that age that my mother wasn't with us, but wasn't the first time we'd ever been alone in pasture full of cows either. My best guess is that this group was curious as well, but it wasn't their usual friendly interest. They knew we didn't really belong there because they didn't know us. They weren't exactly threatening, but they definitely made sure we turned around and left quickly. At least that's my best guess. This group was absolutely friendly andbthe only problem you were going to have is if they got frustrated with you for not paying attention to them. They clearly could not figure out why you weren't petting them! Edit: they are so cute!!!

I was walking through the Peak District today, was approached by a cow like you were and then it started charging us! No calves in the field at all, I shouted at it and started backing up slowly and it stopped before reaching us. Then watched us until we’d left the field. So I’m not sure you’re video is entirely correct! If we’d ran it could have trampled us quite badly!

Vi De ‘anecdotal stats’? I didn’t share any stats, stats on how many UK deaths are caused by ‘x’ don’t convey how dangerous that thing is. Cows kill more people in the U.K. than Lions but you wouldn’t walk through a field of Lions feeling safe would you? Peoples lived experience of animal behaviours are just as important as stats when deciding how dangerous an animal is.

Vi De I understand what stats are I’m a data analyst... I don’t think you understand how they can be incorrectly applied. If a low % of a population are killed by cows that doesn’t mean they are less dangerous than something that kills more people. A small amount of the population walk past cows in a field everyday, the number of people taking daily baths is high in comparison so of course more people die in the bath. That doesn’t mean cows are less dangerous than a bath though.

I think it's ok if it's a known walking route. But if is not then it can be more dangerous, as I've found myself in the middle of a field with a bull and his girlfriends a few times, or when your stuck in mud that goes up to your calves

I work on a ranch and we had a mother cow with a teat spider and we had to haul the baby who was about 2 weeks old still weighed like a newborn and give him the bottle. I held him and carried him on the back of a side by side, his mom ran after me and kept about 16" of distance but i kept talking with her and she knew we were trying to help. First calf i ever had to bury :(

Ana we were chased by about10 today minding our own business and trying to ignore them. We entered the field (we didn’t have a dog), they didn’t have any calves and there were definitely No bulls so why would we feel unsafe, there were also sheep in the field with lambs but from the part where we were directly beside the cows one cow ran up a little bit and stopped. I calmly told my husband we need to ignore them but typically ( mistake number one) my husband was now taking photos! He then decided he going to make a phone call and stand by the cows!!! ( mistake number two) so I was trying to call to him to keep moving (mistake number three) I was making too much noise and spooked the cows and as I had just got passed them and was further away my husband was trying to catch up with me after his chat on the phone ( mistake number four) he started to run after me!!! This is when I was making a bit more noise ( panicked high pitch screams) and now they were chasing us!! We managed to outrun them but looking back we could have handled it differently- I love cows and still do. But what I didn’t tell you was we had a very angry farmer ( whose cows they belonged to) at the exit of the field telling us off and rightly so! But the one thing he did accuse us of was that we were deliberately scaring the cows! No we weren’t but after the experience we have learned that we must respect the animals in the countryside and that we were very sorry that we appeared to upset his herd of cows. The farmer said they probably thought we were calling them in or was going to give them food that’s why they chased us to the gate. Lesson learnt. Sorry Mr Farmer and sorry cows.

A cow can f. you up. Was out in the new forest earlier, accidentally split a herd, as they were quite dispersed. Rest of herd appeared from over a small hill, they had a calf. Got mooooed at from far herd, nearer cow mooed back and eyeballed me, then charged. Glad I had brown trousers.

Come to India When we walk on street, there are cows around us. If a cow is sitting on a road, the entire traffic will be go around it. They are harmless and too cute! Basically India is full of cows, with few people around it!

I wish the rest of the world respected cows like India. They give us milk, cream, cheese, yogurt, curd, butter. And look how we treat them. Force them to give up their beautiful babies and make them cry. Expect them to live in terrible conditions, knee high in shit and then when we've had all the use we can get out of them we murder them. Nice and kind human beings.

I always have been greeted by cows in a very friendly way. They just walk up to me and lick me. It’s the Oxen that almost always charge me… in this group, male/female characteristics dictate MOST dangers.

I'm in Scotland and used to regularly go family walks through fields with livestock when young. I have started trying to get back out walking but I am now terrified to go through fields incase there is livestock unless there is a fenced off path, so mostly stick to roads.

I find that the normal cows are very curious but skittish. I think of them like having the intelligence of geese except even more afraid despite their size. At least a goose will hiss but cows have ran from me just for sneezing or standing up.

Sometimes cows will surround people or other animals crossing their field and will start attacking said person or animal

Try doing all that if there is a dog with you. Different story. Someone I know was killed by cows because they had a dog with them and the heard had calves.

I feel sort of embarrassed and dumb with the amount of cow avoidance I practiced while walking through Scotland last year. I mean, I took some really ridiculous efforts to avoid walking through some fields. Granted, this was in April - May and there were a lot of very young calfs. Ultimately, my trip wasn’t hampered by taking some roundabout ways to avoid them. And I reckon that caution is better of valor. But I wish I’d been a bit more steely when it came to some instances.

I am sure I read though that there are like 600 injuries a year from cows so incidents might still happen a fair bit. I grew up on a farm and reckon avoiding is still best if you can.

I got pretty surprised once at a canoe trip to see my brother getting chased by cows. He went a shore to take a piss but had to run all he could because of a flock of angry cows. And they were angry for absolutely no reason and there were no calves among them.
