I used to haul them from emu farms in WA to SA, VIC and NSW for breeders back in the 1990s. I did over forty loads and only lost two birds. There isn’t much I don’t know about them! When you want to catch them to put on the truck, you have to stand behind them and grab their winglets. If they get in front of you they will rip you to pieces with their sharp claws. However, they can’t kick you if you’re behind them. They didn’t like getting on the truck, but at the end of the three day trip they didn’t want to get off, because they’d settled in and got used to me. I set up overhead water sprays to drench them, there’s nothing they like better than being under a shower of water. I found the best way of hauling them was to have plenty of stops to water them, and stop all night so they could rest. After they get used to you, they are likeable, inquisitive birds.

I’ve visited an emu farm and got to interact with them. Domestic emus that have been imprinted on people are very docile; they’re like big chickens. The most you’ll get out of a regular tame emu is a bite, because they love shiny or distracting things like buttons or fingers. Still advisable to leave wild emus alone, just like any wild animal.

My first experience of seeing an emu was watching the 'White House on the Hill' KZbin channel raise the one emu egg that hatched. Bamboo is awesome! They have boys & Bamboo would race around the yard with them. But the cutest was the tiny little emu diapers so he could stay inside. Obviously he's outside now & since you need to keep more than one he's got two females now that they hatched. Unfortunately the less dominant female had to be separated because they hurt bamboo. It broke my heart to see Bamboo just collapse his head against his human Dad. He was exhausted more from running than from being hurt & is fine now though. But he's very people & particularly his family oriented. The relationship they have with Bamboo is just amazing. It's so fascinating to see them together. They're truly his family & the boys are his nestmates. I can't wait until Bamboo has some eggs from his girl. I hope he gets to raise a couple of them too. maybe if he naturally hatches some he'll accept any others that hatch too. Since you said they kind of combine together anyway. Emus definitely have the prettiest eggs around. I'd love to have an empty one.

Ann is awesome! I love this video, but I'm kind of terrified of emus. When they are angry they look so menacing. I'm glad their beak isn't a little wider; if so they could probably bite your damn head off. But I must admit those ones that were happy were so freaking cute stomping around.

I read some where that statistically, the species responsible for the most deaths in Australia are Horses. I'm from Texas and I'll get bashed by a Horse from time to time, so I know things can go wrong. Please do a video on Horses and how deadly they can be.

Hi, I know you commented a while ago, but I just thought I'd tell you that horses cause the most deaths because drivers run into them. So it's not the horse's fault either, most die in a car accident obviously.

The adaptation that emus have to run was ideal before colonisation of Australia and the invention of the motor car. As fast runners in open terrain they prefer to escape by heading down roads and tracks when followed by a vehicle. This happened to me in Cape York a few years ago. Unfortunately, the lone male emu had a bunch of chicks with him. As a survival instinct, the male will continue to run while the chicks run out of steam and stop. The male didn't come back over the next few days, leaving the chicks in the bush beside the track. One by one they were picked off, presumably by the large feral cats that roam the area, or dingoes. Message: If you get into this situation, don't continue driving down the track, even slowly. This will let the emus walk off the track and you will be on your way much sooner.

There was a farm down the road from my elementary school that had 9 or so Emus at one point (Pennsylvania in the US). That was in the 90s, now it's down to 1.

Great question. They both come from the same group of flightless birds known as ratites. Emus are native to Australia while ostriches are native to Africa. Ostriches are also larger than emus.

My dad took care of a friends fish farm after he died. There also lived a few deer and two emus. So I got to interact with them on a daily basis as a kid. They often picked my head and followed me around but they never really hurt me. I loved them. Named them Timmy and tommy 😅

At least they're relatively easy to keep as pets. The question, when you have a mob of emus in Florida where it can still get to freezing temperatures overnight in the winter, is how come a mating pair can only produce 2 chicks in almost 10 years.

I'm not sure if she is right about an emus mating habits. At this point it's become so weird to me that they would be attracted to a man that Ive searched it. There are videos of an emu having sex with a camera bag, a car, and attempting a kangaroo. They groom naturally and it's quite aggressive as we aggressively scratch an itch at times. So if you want one as a pet please be aware they my try to groom you. This looks like pecking hard and pulling hair or biting (mouth pulls). They can get aggravated and act out as all animals can.
