I’m from the UK and I went to NYC when I was 15 years of age. I heard it was called the city that never sleeps, never fully knew what it meant but I woke up at like 2am in the hotel and thought I’d go down to the reception and get something from the vending machine. I only had pyjama trousers on, no shirt... the lift doors opened up, I walked out and bam, the reception was rammed, people coming in and out and looking. It was so busy! The security guard shouted to me, “boy, get back up there and put yo shirt on!” 😂. Absolutely legged it back up the stairs to the side of the lift

As New Yorkers (lived there for 10 years, and Lieles was born and raised there) we absolutely agree. New Yorkers are actually very nice. But the thing is that as you say we are straight forward with limited time. Everyone is running to their next place whether is work, school or a date and there’s no time to slow down. New York is awesome and it will always stay in our hearts even now that we moved out and are traveling

I’m from Long Island and I’ve only visited the city maybe 1-8 times in my life, and I can honestly say that even for someone like me who is naturally very cautious of my surroundings, I hardly ever feel scared or unsafe in the city. The only times when I would keep my guard up though, are for events like New Years, Tree Lighting, Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the Pride March which I actually went to this past weekend, but even with that....I didn’t feel very unsafe because there was so much security around the area in general.

TheTravelingClatt exactly, however the only parts of the five boroughs that I definitely keep my guard up in are some parts of the Bronx, as well as Bedstuy, and Brownsville Brooklyn. I almost got mugged late at night walking back from Times Square to my hotel by the Empire State Building. Times Square is the perfect place for criminals to hide in plain sight and pick a tourist and follow. Where it nearly happened was surprisingly dark and with very few people around outside of vagrants. I saw it coming though so dove into a small shop. 100% I was followed and was about to get mugged. It would not have been easy on the two guys trailing me I can tell you that! The best form of defence though is avoidance. I can go into far more detail about what happened if anyone is especially interested. As a Welshman I can say unreservedly that NYC is safer than London or many major UK cities. Get even a little bit off the beaten track in UK cities and you are painting a huge target on your back. Having ostentatious items in view is a massive no no in UK cities. Even in the most public of places where tourists gather there's an element of risk. You're unlikely to face more than a bag/camera snatch but having obvious wealth on displace is a massive no no. Regarding knife crime in UK cities (It's widely talked about). It's basically gang related. They don't really target random civilians for that level of violence. Though if you fight back you could very well get stabbed. I'd say the same to an extent applies to all cities and places where you have visitors on holiday and locals with a lot less apparent wealth. They might even take it as an insult that you are brandishing this wealth and target you because of that alone. The huge number of vloggers in a city like NYC I feel has desensitised people to cameras etc. So the risks are far lower. As fairly affluent people on holiday with our guards down (because we are on holiday and trying to enjoy ourselves). It's easy to become overly confident. This is exactly how I put myself in the difficult situation in NYC. I was at the end of a 2 week holiday with zero issues and my guard was totally down. I'd been walking a lot late at night and taking short cuts and nothing had happened. I'd heard all the media about how incredibly safe a city it was, and I have to say it really is. Does not mean people can forget common sense though!

I agree but I think you've painted a rosy picture. Sorry but 6 years is not that long. Parts of East Harlem are dangerous, Jamaica Queens, and crown heights Brooklyn are rough in my opinion. There is gun violence, don't kid yourself. If you go to a Yankees game, you'll be with a lot of people, but if you go just afew blocks from the stadium, there's some rough areas. One of the good things about NYC compared to other cities (I'm thinking Philly in particular) is the neighborhoods change gradually, so it's harder to take one wrong turn and end up in a really dangerous area. That being said, I've lived in both New York City and Buenos Aires and the only place I've ever been mugged is a two block radius from my small Long Island suburb's train station, even though the town was voted the safest in the entire state of New York. Even hanging out in Harlem at night, I've only ever been scammed, never intimidated with violence. (the scam relied on me realizing the risky optics of me, a pale ass college kid, giving a hard time to a poor elderly african american man in the middle of Harlem for making me pay for alcohol bottles he dropped, but that's almost laughable compared to the times I've actually had a weapon held up to me)
