Healthcare is free for everyone in Brazil, even foreigns. If you had walking an Public Hospital E. R. they will do the same first aids for free for you. Nobody spread this but its true. Im sorry about what happened. Tip for you. Wear brazilian style, do not show off goods, mobile, clocks, jewelry, expensive brands... You are a "gringo" try to mix, to mingle, to camouflage your "gringoness". But mostly of all, do not let it get you down. My friend got similar experience in France. And I know another that got similar as well in LowLands... so... It happens everywhere. Stay safe and enjoy Brazil.

As a Brazilian female in her 30s (and a typical southern/gaúcha physically, so I'm constantly mistaken for an European among Brazilians) and as someone that has never got mugged, let me explain a few things that accumulate into scenarios like this, so you can instinctually understand why people here do or disapprove certain behaviour to keep ourselves safe: 1. The import taxes on products in Brazil are *absurd*, **especially** in electronic products... Which means, for us , basically almost all of them for entertainment purposes I guess. we produce a lot of food and raw resources, but we don't have good factories/brands for microchips and pc parts, from raw materials to finished products. We sell raw stuff to other countries, that make them into finished products, then buy that stuff all back... The result: the moment your plane touches the ground, imagine as if your phone, camera and laptop were worth 3x/4x more. That's not an exaggeration btw. Brazil has, for example, the highest medium price for iPhones in the whole world. One of the lasted models has the approximated price tag of $1,256.21! With that money alone, a Brazilian in a poor life situation can pay for all their expenses for *months*. So yeah. 2. The difference between the poor and the rich is **really** wide in Brazil. Let me put that visually: 1% of the population owns 50% of the total amount of money all of Brazil has. So after the super rich, the remaining 50% have their possessions split into among different classes. Even the rare "high class citizen" is far, far away from the 1%s. 3. A survey by the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) left Brazil in the penultimate position among the countries with the greatest possibility of social ascension. And that was in 2020, before the pandemic hit us hard. Only God knows where we would stand now. We probably would just walk to last place, then dig a hole. Statistically, there's generally a span of 6-8 generations before a family from a poor background ascends financially. And I speak that as someone from a poor background that has uplifted themselves. It was brutal competition just to guarantee a job here, despite being highly educated. In any other country I would be paid much more for the same job I do here... But without the party life, the sun, and the warmth from both the climate and the people, which are worth more than their weight in gold imo. Oh, and the delicious inexpensive healthy food, which I miss to death every time I travel. Brazil has a *lot* of potential, if only our government weren't so corrupt that it sucked us dry. So yeah, people who are actually desperate here, are *really* desperate. They are competing amongst themselves for what little wealth there is left as the elevator goes down, and there are so many of them. So here are 10 tips from the top of my head: (1) - You are going to a public space, that's not a private shopping mall or something with actual security like cameras? Then wear no jewellery. Brazil's most commonly wore accessories are made from both natural and artificial materials that are very inexpensive and have no precious metals (read: "bijuteria"). Also, salt water and chlorine will slowly destroy your **actual** jewellery if you wear them to the beach/pool. Don't do that. Like, most of us won't even entertain having real jewels, except for maybe a simple wedding ring, much less have enough extra cash to even consider burning on more sparkly rocks that will do nothing for us career-wise. Please take care of yours, if you have any. (2) - If you have a relatively new phone (say, last year-ish)... Well, buy a very old phone model for street use. Like, 4+ years or so. Just to take calls, send messages, etc, and use that in public. The thieves know what to look for because they are trying to sell, and those are not it. And **definitely** stay away from showing off anything Apple if there's a clear line for someone to run by while you are aiming a selfie and snatch it from you. (3) If you need to take a call, send a message, check your location... Go inside a shop. No, really! Go inside a shop, even a small one, like a drugstore, and tell them "Sorry, I'm just taking a call/checking my phone since it's safer here." The shopkeepers will understand, we all have been in that situation at some point. Another way to do so: I have a few times pretended to know someone on the street (said people quickly "got it", and pretended to know me back) so it would seem that I was in the company of a friend while making a call. (4) People are afraid of attracting attention to themselves when it's unclear if someone has a weapon (say, in crowded areas, or if there is no good visibility of whoever it is) but nobody will turn down the chance to help in prevention. Heck, I've let an unknown couple into my home's garden because they thought they were being followed on the sidewalk late night. Just ask somebody for help. I've been assisted all the few times I felt like I needed it through my life. (5) - Keep your car windows closed, and if you need something from your phone ask a friend or family member to check it for you while you drive. Lookouts tend to analyse the cars and the electronics people are using inside on traffic lights when vehicles have to slow down. So that's not something that you want to do on your lonesome, in an unknown neighbourhood, when the car is completely stopped. Much less with your windows down. If are completely on your own, think on how to do it discreetly (on your lap, or maybe attach your phone somewhere inconspicuous on your panel) (6) - Brand name accessories, shoes, sunshades... Like, first thing? Go to a Renner, or a Riachuelo (those are popular places to buy clothes by basically anyone) and give yourself some new, cool, inexpensive streetwear for everyday use. We don't waste money on a jeans that costs literally our monthly rent here and stroll with them on the sidewalk, and it's reeeeally easy to learn to have a good eye for spotting high-end materials... I known I do, and it has nothing to do with having names like "Louis Vuitton" written on them. Also, get yourself some Havaianas flipflops. They are very very inexpensive here, and they really help to blend in with locals. (7) - If you are wearing a backpack, especially in packed locations, wear it turned around (on your belly, not your back). That way, people can't check your pockets while you aren't looking. That's default behaviour for us sometimes. Look at the people around you for clues. (8) - Look around sometimes. When looking at people, do so actually looking at them in the eye. Glance over your shoulder. You would be surprised at how much safer you are by simply looking like your head is not in the clouds, and like you are paying attention to what's going on around you. (9) - A decent travel guide, a good hotel host and/or a Brazilian friend are your lucky key-chains. Just copy their behaviours and tips you will be perfectly fine all through your stay. (10) - Finally, well, when you are among friends... Just be yourself! It's not that I don't own/can't own anything expensive... it's just that I don't parade with them on my lonesome around people that are completely unknown to me. It's pretty normal for teenagers and adults to go to parties, the beach, the bar and such in groups, so everybody can chat and look out for each other. Thugs steer away from large groups that seem close knit basically anywhere, since it's much easier and safer for them to simply keep walking and find someone alone to pick on.

Hi, I'm from Honduras, I travelled alone to Rio during the carnaval in abril 2022.Before my trip I did alot of research about the city, places to go, how safe it was and read many negative comments . I remember feeling terrified and almost cancelled my vacations, but I decided to give the city a chance to prove me otherwise and for my suprise it was the best experience of my life, and I can say I never felt in danger. I'm not saying the city doesn't have crimes or any danger but if you move like a local try not to call the attentions of robbers (for example don´t hang your camera on your neck) and if you are aware of you surroundings, you will be completely fine.

I've been there twice (on business). It seems to be a society of drastic extremes; opulent wealth, hyper-extreme poverty, and not a very substantial middle class. The taxi ride from the hotel near Copacobana was horrifying. In fact, one of the businesspeople I was traveling with was robbed at gunpoint as he exited his taxi AT the airport. I'm certain that if you know people and have local connections that it's a very different experience. In fairness, I should add that Brazilian people are among some of the warmest, most friendly, and kindest people I have ever met.

@@mariahspapaya Very much so. At the end of the day, that area is a tourist magnet because of the beautiful beaches and several posh hotels. As a result, it also attracts people who prey on tourists. I think the biggest liability of being in that area is not speaking Brazilian Portuguese. People will "test and sift" you to determine how easy a mark you are by your familiarity with the language and culture. That said, the Brazilian people are among the kindest, warmest, and friendlies people I have met anywhere (and I've traveled extensively to the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Central America, Western and Eastern Europe). Just be careful. Don't go out at night and be aware that it is not uncommon for those working in the hotel industry to align themselves with no-gooders. I'm sorry for your bad experience in Brazil. Each region of Brazil has its dangers, which vary from region to region, so knowing what these dangers are and avoiding them is the safest way to travel around Brazil. In big cities there are bandits and in nature there are some dangerous animals. Brazilians like to see foreigners enjoying our country, but we are a little worried when we see foreigners traveling here without knowing the dangers and taking many risks. If many foreign tourists suffer some kind of attack here (either by bandits or animals), this can have negative repercussions for our tourism and Brazil is safer than it's said in other countries, just know what the risks are and avoid them. Capitals in the north and northeast are more violent than those in the south of the country. There are many violent cities in Brazil, just as there are many violent cities in the USA, Europe, etc. The important thing is to know which neighborhoods/places in each city to avoid. There are places that are safe during the day and dangerous at night. For a foreigner to visit Brazil safely, just ask Brazilians, especially hotel receptionists, taxi drivers, municipal guards and police. I always do this in every region I visit, even though I'm Brazilian. A suggestion for you: there are many videos of Brazilians and foreigners showing the beautiful landscapes of Brazil, so a differential would be for you to detail in your videos some of the dangers and precautions to be taken in each region, for example (when applicable). What to do and what not to do. If the place is safe, comment this and if the place is dangerous, explain what the dangers are and what precautions foreigners should take, exactly like you did in this video. Useful Public Telephones - Public emergency services and public utility telephone numbers will be the same anywhere in the country, all three digits. Most calls are free, but not all. Military Police 190 Federal Highway Police 191 Public patient removal service (ambulance) 192 Fire Department 193 Federal Police 194 Civil Police 197 State Highway Police 198 Civil Defense 199 Municipal Guard 153 The interior of Brazil is wilder than its coastline, so consult the locals about the dangers of the region, especially not to get lost and how to avoid attacks by wild animals (the jaguar is the biggest predator in Brazil, but there are other animals such as: wild pigs, cougars, snakes, alligators, poisonous frogs, etc.). The least inhabited and wildest states in Brazil are: all of the northern region (Amazon rainforest), Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and the western half of the state of Goiás and Tocantins. It's in these regions that the largest population of jaguars is concentrated and where the largest number of attacks on people occur (jaguars can be found in the rest of the country, but the incidence is much lower, almost rare).

Depending on the case, it's more recommended to hire a local guide. Even a group of them are dangerous. If you see or hear a group of them, climb as quickly as possible into a tree, gate or a tall termite mound. When you hear the noise that sounds like wood or bamboo breaking / cracking, try to climb a tree or anywhere a little high because it is probably a group of catetos or queixadas arriving (the noise is due to the animal hitting its lower and upper jaws). kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXS2oIOgqtSgiLM kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5W3fJWBoLyff9U kzbin.info/www/bejne/oH-poZawncyLrac

People from Rio and Brazil talk about what they watched on tv news. There are tv show which show only bad news from all parts of our country. The headquarters of these TVs is Rio or São Paulo, the more important places in the country. Once in a while the TV shows bad news from south states, mainly Curitiba, places that no one knows outside Brazil. I live in Rio since I was born (more than 50 years). I live in a good neighborhood of the north zone and I've never faced any bad situation. I've heard from friends who spent 5 days in New York City that in 4 days face dangerous situations. 5 guys tryed steal the camera at Central Park, for example. In the last day, never bad happened with them, but when they arrived in their hotel (50 meters from Time Square), it or any shop inside it had been stolen. The "rule" is simple... don't walk with expensive things on hands or jewelry, so no thief come close to you, you won't be a target of anyone.

It's really not that bad at all, didn't you see the second part, where they said nothing ever happened to them? The locals really "like" to exaggerate, he got mugged, this is a fact, but things like this happen in many major cities or even worse, like the recent attacks in New York City. So it is reasonably safe if you take basic precautions, and the main beaches on summer sundays are not recommended for tourists, because they don't know the best places to stay, watch the wayfarer video in Rio de Janeiro if you want to get a better idea

But it was a very smart move to ask the second question and put it at the end of the video, yes, the perception of danger by locals is much bigger than it really is, and unfortunately some "like" to spread unnecessary misconception to tourists and foreigners, this was well captured in this video. In fact Rio's homicide rates are at a 30-year low, and lower than at least 20 major U.S. cities, so it is really not that unsafe, especially considering that most homicides happen in favelas far away from the touristic areas and they are all accounted for in this statistic. I was once in the Help Discoteca talking to these men and these 3 tall Dutch guys were walking in Ipanema at night and some boys came to try to rob them and one of them actually knocked two of the robber boys out cold. So they have incredible gall and are often high on drugs.

Visiting the beaches of Brazil is more expensive from December to March due to the long school holidays and summer season (all over Brazil). From April onwards it's much cheaper. From May onwards it starts to cool down in southern Brazil - from Rio de Janeiro towards southern Brazil. From Rio de Janeiro towards the north of Brazil there is practically no cold season. Note: in July there are also school holidays (short) and maybe it gets a little more expensive again in the northern half of Brazil. Winter in Brazil occurs mainly in July and August, the coldest month is usually July and at this time Brazilians from the southern half of Brazil travel more to the mountains such as: Monte Verde (state of Minas Gerais) Historic cities of Ouro Preto and Mariana (state of Minas Gerais) Campos do Jordão (state of São Paulo) - known as the "Brazilian Switzerland" is the city with the highest altitude in Brazil - 1.639 m. Urubici (state of Santa Catarina) Cambará do Sul (state of Santa Catarina) - to visit the canyons of the region, called "Aparados da Serra". Gramado/Canela/ Nova Petrópolis (state of Rio Grande do Sul) - to visit the cities of German culture Bento Gonçalves/RS and its wineries - to visit the region of Italian culture. Therefore, in the winter season these cities in the mountain regions are much more expensive and the beaches in the south of Brazil are practically empty. Note: To find out the best time to visit the beaches of Brazil, check the term "praiômetro" on Google and click on the viajenaviagem website (link that shows the incidence of rainfall month by month by beaches in Brazil). Brazil is giant and one region may be drowning in so much rain while another region may be suffering from drought. I always consult these two weather websites: Climatempo and Accuweather. To accompany the formation of storms, mainly cyclones in the south of the country, I follow the website "Windy" (on the upper right side, click on "gusts of wind").

The chronicle violence problem in Rio is not exactly the difference between poor and rich, but the impunity that encourages criminals be more and more audacious, and the drug cartels became stronger in the Favelas, they compete territory with other cartels and even against the Rio state, and the worst is that they have a kind of political influence through corruption, so some political parties work hard to facilitate their lives in the parliaments. This phenomenon has began in a couple of decades ago, Rio was really safe around 40-30 years ago, even in the Favelas. It's funny say that, but it's a sad and kind of recent phenomenon. A result of impunity and corrupt politicians.

Hello gringo! Such a shame what happened to you dude! I'm from Mexico 🇲🇽 and I really wanna visit beautiful Brazil so now I know I have to be careful. According to your Brazil video many locals seem to feel unsafe in Rio. I live in Mexico City I can say is a similar latino vibe but for sure you're not gonna be robbed or at least the probability to be assaulted with violence being foreigner is 80% less. All people here use the phone and cameras at street everywhere, so I think here is safer speccialy at touristic places (it could be a little unsafe in some remote areas of the city just like most of cities in Latin America). There may can be some pickpockets inside the metro but It's still very rare cause there's security and cameras everywhere (you just have to look after your belongings when metro is full or there's big crowds of people). What happen in Mexico about narco and crimes (what media only shows about Mexico) is that criminal groups kill each other but they never envolve or kill normal people and that only happens in specific areas of the country (Some little towns of Sinaloa, Michoacan, Guerrero) for sure no one want go to those places. Come visit my country!! It's a very chill, diverse, cultural country! We have all kinds of landscapes, the best beaches and a huge cosmopolitan, open mind and I personally can say Mexico City is the most gay friendly city in the entire world!! 🌈 Saludos!!

Buddy, I'm so sorry about what happened to you. Unfortunately this is the part that embarrasses me the most, and unfortunately I have to be realistic with foreigners about the security issues in Rio de Janeiro. I unfortunately speak with pain in my heart for being my country, as I know that tourists expect to have a great experience and when unpleasant situations happen, the trip is spoiled. I will never romanticize the city's violence and criminality, as that encourages keeping things the way they are.

I feel for you man. I couldnt watch more than 4min of this video. Number 1. dont go to Brazil. Just DONT! I left Rio 15 years ago and never regretted. Just dont. 2. Those healthcare prices are not normal at all, should be R$400 for the visit plus 600 to 650 for the local anestesia+stitches (R$1000) . My parents work in healthcare in Brazil and you basically got robbed twice. Indeed is nothing like Swedden were people are nice and civilized! Not generalizing because still have some nice souls in Rio and it is a beautiful place but, I rather not. Sorry for your bad experience.

Personallly, when travelling, I do a little background research of the place I am going to. Then, this might not sound right to everyone, I tend to roam around the nice(r) neighborhoods and keep away from the "riskier parts of a town". And whenever possible, I guess it's always safer to travel around with a local resident. If you think about it, that actually applies to our (at least my own) daily living. We all know that there is always "the bad side of the town" in any place in the world whether you live in California or in any other part of the US or in Europe or Austalia or Africa or Asia or somewhere else in North America or South America. It doesn't matter where, there's always a "bad part", so basically just stay away from them. *More so if you are a tourist in whatever country you are visiting.* Being too adventurous can be very dangerous and could even cost you your life. YOLO, don't forget.

I want to add a point: the wealthier and pricier the safer, while the cheaper and more lower-class the more risky and dangerous. Poverty usually leads to crime.

The whole point of the video is that it won’t be dangerous as long as you follow the advice. You’ll be surprised ocer how much safer Rio will feel than you think. And staying in a hostel, being with other travelers will add to the sense of security. Dominic is right though: Uruguay is a really cool place and in terms of safety, yes it has less crime

Robbers rarely target someone who is aware of their presence and suspicious of their intentions. Easiest way to do this is to make a habit of casually glancing at as many people as is sensible every time you are moving in public (not just the pretty girls!) Within days you will develop a sixth sense in reading people, and you might be amazed to see just how many others are doing the same to you.
