Another killer was the bright green wallpaper in most Victorian homes. To get that color, the wallpaper was treated with arsenic, which leached into the air over time causing the occupants to be slowly poisoned.

As for the adulteration of the bread, is that why they were absurdly obsessed with laxatives back then?
@2packrm7818 ай бұрын
I'm going to say, there could be some truth backing it. If I had to take a guess I'm going to say around.. two-thirds to a half of the laxatives were being sold in the daily papers. We know (because) the population was growing at the same time where 'food & nutrition' wasn't there yet & how it was being poorly done from pricing to 'quantity over quality'. When you really think about it some more, exactly how many ppl actually ate a balanced (healthy) meal a week; where there was some decent bread, veggies, rice, beans, fruits, & meats (of pork, chicken, lamb, fish & maybe beef)? & you could also add on snacks, treats, & dessert(s).

Impress my dinner guests? If I serve them the whitened, adulterated loaf, I don't think I'll even have those same dinner guests again, unless it's a prop loaf and not for eating. My dinner will make them sick, and they won't come back.

Unscrupulous business people we still have today. History repeats itself. The mangle: How can you run a hand/child through the mangle and reduce it to 1/4 inch thick when the adult is right next to ithe mangle? I think an explanation is necessary here.

Children were not always under observation, much like today.

@@Cynthia99911 You have a point there. There were never grownups around when I grew up and played outside wether we were ice skating and the ice was so thin that you could see a wave in front of you or joyriding at night on lorries (used to transport materials for rebuilding the street). Never heard of a bad accident. With the mangle I can see fingers getting squished but not much more with or without adults being present.

My mum used one at her grandmothers, the two cylinders rolled opposite directions, hard to start, hard to stop. The material was heavy and wet kids and adult hands get caught in folds of the material. Trying to pull out the limb or hair out of the vice grip was next to impossible. Then you get the infection from the wounds...
