I felt like "No Country for Old Men" is best understood be people who grew up in Texas, Oklahoma, or really anywhere in the great plains in the 80s. The most grotesque part of the movie is how trusting the people are. How flat and dry and uncomfortable it is, rife with bad haircuts. Every town has a store guy. Every town has a drug problem. Everybody trusts the cops. And most states have a creepy psycho killer. Everyone in flyover country knows what a cattle bolt is. I grew up in ND. Joel and Ethan grew up in MN. i knew exactly where this came from. Best movie they ever did.

fargo > no country for old men. true grit > no country for old men. both just have more impact where as with no country for old men, it ends and you are left with "that's it?"
