What a great documentary. The more I learn about Lynch, the more I admire him. He’s the quintessential artist.

I remember going to the Nuart Theater in 1979 to see Eraserhead with my best friend. We came out feeling very, very stoned, and looked at each other wondering what the hell we just saw. (That little film of Lynch with the Woody dolls ran before the movie for years.)

This film inspired The Shining. It was apparently one of Kubrick's favorite movies and he showed it to all of the cast and crew pre-filiming. Which makes me wonder if he showed it to Danny Lloyd and the child actresses who played the infamous twins because apparently Kubrick shielded the children from the horror aspect of The Shining. Considering Eraserhead is still scary to me as an adult, and The Shining is infamously scary, I would wager he didn't show Eraserhead to the children.

I was lucky enough to see Eraserhead in a movie theater during a Lynch retrospective last year. It's one of the best movie experiences I've ever had (that rant about watching on a phone was spot-on). I read about the making of the movie in the Lynch on Lynch book, but it's nice to get even more details on how the movie was made. Thanks for this amazing video!

I have to say, the thought of ever finding out how Lynch created the baby [an extreme unlikelihood] fills me with a different kind of darkness. It IS magical and should remain a mystery. And, movie monster or not, I always felt sorry for it. Eraserhead is simply a perfect fim, a perfect expression of an artist's vision - which can only be said of the truly great films. No matter how many times I see it, the ending - with the incredible sound design - deeply moves me. It's a dark film in every sense, but it's also beautiful and luminescent. I have my own interpretation of Eraserhead, but I'm glad it's still alive for me - not like something under an electron microscope that had to die in being analyzed.
@matthewcrome5835
@matthewcrome5835 Жыл бұрын
In my interpretation, the baby was never deformed, at least not in the way it was portrayed. Maybe it had a birth defect or was born premature or something, but the alien appearance of the baby was almost entirely in Henry's imagination, as were other things like the Lady in the Radiator (a symbol to him of escape from his suffocating life), the dream sequences, and Henry and his neighbor melting into the couch (though they may have actually been having sex). This makes his murder of the baby at the end all the more disturbing - he killed an innocent infant who to him was the most repulsive thing imaginable. The reason he was driven to madness was because of the dystopian world around him and the way he was forced into fatherhood with the mother leaving him. But that's just my interpretation- there's a billion ways to intepret this, it really is a Rorschach blot of a film.

Although funny sounding when put that way, it's not technically true. They ended their trip because David claimed Europe was too scenic and beautiful and it left him feeling uninspired

I think it was around 1977, or 78... Some guys I knew took me to see Rocky Horror. They were really into the creeps who did "acting" in the audience. I thought it was just silly. They went back a lot. Not me. But, a poster for Erasurehead was in the lobby. I was intrigued. Never saw the movie, but knew it must be something. Now, years later...I know I was onto something.

Well done! There was some great stuff there that I hadn't seen before. You might consider the unusual production of After Hours. Martin Scorsese, after some box office failures, suddenly had The Last Temptation of Christ's production cancelled only days prior to shooting. (We know, now, he eventually got it made, but he didn't know it then.) So he was seriously considering leaving filmmaking. After Hours allowed him to to have fun making movies again. I think of it as a Corman School film - and the funniest satiric black comedy since Roger Corman and Charles B. Griffith invented the form with A Bucket of Blood (which I believe After Hours references). Thanks for the fun film doc!

I've seen this film several times until video replaced the revival movie houses. That truly was the saddest time for film. Each time I never questioned anything that I saw on the screen because it was just beautiful to look at and who cared about a plot. Plus I always feel that David Lynch is just so full of bull sh** when he's interviewed. Guy Maddin is another one of those film makers that I just want to watch the films.

It seems so obvious now, but I never realized that his head was being turned into erasers. I was so consumed by the dream that this simple logic, the reason for the title of the film, completely escaped me. I saw it as being more symbolic; the soul was being corrupted by the industrial world

Here's a different take on the Lady in the Radiator: The lady in the radiator is NOT a figure of good. She lives secreted in a hellishly hot place. She's got exaggeratedly large "cheerful" cheeks, which punctuate an exaggerated "Lynchian" smile, which is never a good thing. She encourages him to kill his child and join with her. She is accompanied by the bright light, which you interpret as good, but Lucifer is light, too, and he's not good. In the end, Henry has given his soul to Lucifer by killing a child.

@@PolarBear-rc4ks Your assuming that I agree with taxidermy. He didn’t just make notes. He experimented with it, a quote from Lynch himself “I dissected it. I put it in a bottle, but the bottle had a real small hole in it. The cat went in like a Slinky, but it got rigor mortis in there”. My point is no film or experimental purpose is worth the involvement of something being killed or being played about with whilst deceased
