A record-breaking heat wave is sweeping across parts of southern and eastern Asia. Many countries have recorded the hottest April on record. Millions of people are still battling the punishing heat and soaring temperatures have forced school closures in some regions. Authorities are taking other precautionary measures for citizens to avoid heat stroke and dehydration. DW spoke to environmental lawyer and climate activist Rafay Alam.

Mass reforestation is cheap and doable capitalism or not. It is the will a vision that is lacking. Individuals can support efforts right now. But Small projects are not enough, more is needed to achieve positive affect on scale. Industrial Plantation forestry is also a tool to be used, even if its not ecologically perfect. It does take pressure of natural forest.

Ive left the Philippines when I was 25 and the highest temp I have experienced then was 36-37 degrees C. Now temperatures range up to 40-46C! Just in a span of a decade there has been an abrupt increase. The sad situation is that a lot of Southeast Asian countries do not produce as much greenhouse gases compared to the US, China, EU countries, but we have experienced the worst effects of climate change such as stronger typhoons and droughts. Unfortunately I do not see any massive changes in governmental policy and implementation of greenhouse gas laws to curb further rise in temperature.

My point is that countries that contribute the least to climate change shouldn't have to FIND WAYS TO ADAPT to a situation caused mostly by developed countries, who emit most of the carbon. Pakistan is not even on the top 20 list of carbon emissions by country. And if you look at carbon emission per capita, the country is even further down the list.

It's all very well keep advocating air conditioning and fans but the use of more electric adds to the problem long term. Simple things like painting roofs white reduces the temperature inside the huts considerably, governments should be investing in micro solar projects for people planting more trees for shade along the streets. Farmers watering their crops at the end of the day so the water doesn't evaporate. I see that all over Europe,great sprays of water in the heat,bad for plants,bad for water conservation.Couldn't help noticing how many people are wearing polyester and other man-made fabrics, especially the Rohinga ladies. The environmental lawyer was spot on.. plenty of money for wars and all the human misery and pollution they bring and nothing to protect the only planet we have to live on!

I’ve worked in a building with a white, uninsulated, metal roof in the midwest of America when it was only 40C with 88% humidity. It wasn’t appreciably cooler, and I was glad there was AC in my house!

As the dude accidentally alluded to, the climate gases emitted by "rich" countries, particularly the European ones, are a rapidly shrinking proportion of the total, and with inequality out of control in most of those countries, appealing (or indeed demanding) that their publics pay to mitigate the impact in poorer countries is a losing strategy.

I wonder the same thing, but economies and ecosystems don’t just die (unless it’s a tsunami, comet, mega volcano). The problem is that the distribution of resources (money, but also means) to reduce the effects arent divided equally. So is the use of those resources and the pollution and overconsumption. Mother Nature doenst judge it takes and gives. These heat strokes, rising temperatures and less crops are the start. At the moment nobody wants to take their losses. As usual throughout history a disaster has to happen to get all parties and people aboard to change. Many people already want change (activists, individuals, some governments), but some cooperations don’t. And don’t forget the feasibility of the change. Luckily there is a spark of hope from innovation and scientists with many things being tested. But all things together won’t make this change a smooth ride at all…

In Northen Thailand right now; sustained mid day temps of around 40-41 for months now. (that's Celsius for those in the U.S. Britain so like 105F) Most of our young fruit trees are dead even with constant watering and shade structures surrounding them. Not so bad for me, I'm not a professional farmer who's income relies on healthy plants. We've no AC, the house is an old Teak wood place that can't be cooled that way.

The plan is to shift the wealth to the global south. The UN admitted it themselves. Climate change policy is not about the environment. As if they care about lives being lost when there has been a 98% reduction in climate related deaths over the past 100 years. It's a non issue obviously and they know it. They just drum up fear to get policies pushed through.

@@wordscapes5690 in my area in east Germany we got very light earthquakes as well. It feels very weird and luckily I never experienced a harder one like those in Taiwan or Japan. I also saw footage of a mountain road where cars was hit by rocks. It was very terrible. I hope it will be quiet in Taiwan but on the other side it's nature. 🙏

The next 10 years will be a transition period for energy transition. As the temperature rises, wealthy people who own coolers use electricity without feeling guilty. Then, CO2 is emitted from the thermal power generation, and even hotter air is blown out from the outdoor unit. This vicious cycle has occurred in China, and will continue to occur in Southeast Asia and India. Global warming will accelerate unless we do more to reduce the amount of coolers we use as much as possible, like I did. People and pets with coolers can protect themselves from the heat, but outdoor animals and plants will die from the heat, which will be reflected in the food shortage situation in the near future. For the people that did not know the reason why the UN chose 1,5 degrees limit and also warned us to absolutely not reach the 2 degree world average tempearature. That is because we have multiple tipping points innthe World, one of them is the Great Barrier Reef, an other is the West Antarctica Sheet. If we reach 1,5 or especially the 2 degree increase we we can active these tipping points and they can react with each other and lead to irrerversible effects and make the Earth unhabitable for ever

I have seen two videos recently that made me sceptic about everything that is said. One guy was prooving in a video that the Great Barrier Reef has never been is such a good health. Supposedly, it like hot water. The other video was showing the Antarctica ice over the past hundred years (or so) accelerated and this was a boring video with more ice in the winter and less ice in the summer. A boring video with no change from the start to the end. LOL, what to think ? Who is right ?
