Deepseek is actually win story for all of us. It's OPEN so the cat is out of the bag on this one and you can run even the biggest model localy on your machine. That means a lot of companies will probably be using on-prem AIs and train they own data on it. And remember that the paper is out so that means anybody can make it better and contribute to make the model even better. I could see my company bying coupe of Nvidia digits to run our intranet A.I. for all sorts of tasks or maybe for analysing some elasticsearch data. This is big.

Nilay's enthusiasm for Haswell's "revolutionary" battery life on that MacBook Air was certainly something. I mean, 13 hours! Truly groundbreaking. But now, faced with the actual potential to revolutionize everything with AI, it's all "cautious optimism" and "concerns about misinformation." Funny how excited he gets about a slightly longer battery, but when it comes to something that could reshape society, it's time for the deep thoughts. Guess some revolutions are more equal than others.

I remember that Dieter video on tools and instruments. It was so goooood. I miss those thoughtful pieces on The Verge. I really really miss him on the channel. But at least the Pixel team is getting it together after he's gone there - so I guess a win? But with so much politics, some thoughtful videos on gadgets would be great!!!

"Forget self-driving cars, Nilay's dream is a laptop that can power the entire city of San Francisco for a week. That's the future he believes in. AI? Too vague. Too unpredictable. Give him a battery that can run Crysis on max settings for 24 hours straight, and he'll lead the AI revolution himself."
@rohitramkrishna18 сағат бұрын
I'm waiting for the video where Nilay explains how AI could be used to optimize battery life. Then, and only then, will he be truly on board. Until then, it's all 'misinformation' and 'manipulation.' But a slightly longer runtime? That's innovation you can believe in.

The question of “what’s the killer app?” misses the mark, because what these companies are after isn’t drips of revenue from billions of app users, it’s transformative superintelligence. Sam wants to be able to spin up as many copies as he wants of the smartest lawyers, scientists, engineers, traders & executives in the world, because if you can do that you can dominate not one domain, but all of them. I’m not making this up, and they aren’t even really being sneaky about this, you just have to listen and believe them when they tell you what they’re after.

Right, there's the profit motive and the military applications. It's one or both of those that are driving us toward AI. Either everybody thinks AI will make them rich, or help them prevail against their perceived adversaries. Yes there are other use cases... but the majority will fall into these categories.

The potential use for AI is so broad and shallow that it's difficult for me to summarize my thoughts on it. I feel this is a great opportunity for someone at the verge to make a venn diagram. Ultimately though, I don't trust AI; it can be helpful, but I always check the sources and vet the information. Also, I refuse to become reliant on it; it's anything but reliable and I don't want it to be significant part of my life. Lastly, some of the hotline examples were really concerning. Please don't use AI for medical advice, and learning how to do something yourself instead of asking an AI to do it is a great way to learn valuable skills.

Yah that’s why we tolerate the LLMs which are functionally just a D- average College Sophomore who is overconfident about the school they got into, coasting on their first-year 101 & seminar successes, and they are running into a wall in their 201s but have no idea that their mid-term grades are going to give them a true reality check…

Deepseek is much bigger than AI. Deepseek engineering, software and resource management. Deepseek p showed that any technical development area could slash capital and operating costs to 2-3% of what everyone thinks. In my area of expertise in climate mitigation,I now see that the $100’s of billions to mitigate climate change can be done for a fraction of the billions paradigm that everyone seems locked into. It is the Deepseek effect. Could global poverty, or world hunger be solved using the Deepseek perspective!?

I spend the bulk of my time on testing, brainstorming, and designing. A.I. is TERRIBLE at creativity and generating new ideas. I feel sorry for anyone who lets that part of their brain atrophy. Sure but it is also a matter of what you are using the tech for. If a pace maker stops working it is a genuine issue. The problem with AI is that is being used for the most mundane of things to extremely important stuff. If the ai spits out that your dog can have chocolate, or if alcohol is perfectly okay to drink with that xanax, it is a genuine issue.

I dont really want to rain on the machinist's story, but does your partner know the messages you send them online are written by AI? Or are they under the assumption that you are a great writer, but just dont talk like how you write? Because if they dont know, they may be under the impression you are somebody you are not. If the partner does know, then there is no issue, they just see that difference as a habit or quirk.
