While you’ve tackled this a few times Bill, this is pure gold and a great accompaniment of video version of Brad Herndon’s book. Each one of your series has become the best watches out there to actually learn something. Whether it’s sharing with Jordan, getting us to grab premises like MrMiagi, or just showing your best swing at the pitches you’re dealing with….. it’s the best content out there. It’s also ironic that you are just being a great human and hunting mentor sharing your knowledge….No magic seeds, consulting, new books or web classes. Frankly, I’d buy in if you had some. :)

Garrett, I appreciate it. I will find something to sell you! Just kidding. Thanks for the comment.

We leased land years ago which I prescouted on google earth I picked my stand site out before ever setting foot on the place. 15 years later it is still there and has been one of our most productive stands

Yes, the method definitely works. I used to hunt out of state a lot and I didn't have time for traditional scouting. I would often be successful entirely based on stands I found using the topo maps and aerial phots. Good luck.

I do a lot of digital “scouting” before getting out there. I lucked out last year but limited in my area due to the abundance of other hunters and can’t find people with land willing to let me hunt on it because others have ruined it in the pass.

With westerly winds dominate, are points that face westward very good for bedding
@bill-winke5 ай бұрын
No, not as good as the ones that point south, north or east. We saw that when the guy flew my farm with the thermal drone back in March. Almost no deer bedded on the windward points, it was always on the lee side where they had the wind at their back and could see what was going on below them (downwind).

Great video. I love using the hunt stand app for scouting. I love hunting ridge tops because wind is usually consists. I wish we had apps like this back in the 90’s when i had better farms to hunt and when we seemed to have more deer here in ohio

Amen to that. When I was a much younger man in the early 90s I had permission to hunt 62 farms in NE Iowa where I grew up! I would go to the NRCS office and buy the aerial photos for $1 per page. About went broke buying maps!

Bill, at the 1:57 mark, you mentioned Mapbox, and liking the “contour lines” feature. Personally, for my farm, I find Huntstand’s contour features very LACKING! My farm is not “mountainous”, but it does have some good elevation changes. Yet Huntstand’s contour lines are too far apart to show ANY REAL DETAIL!!! I have been in talks with the HuntStand owners and developers about this issue, and hopefully they will do something about it. There are other map apps that show great detail, so I know it is something that can be done about it. It just needs to be implemented!

@@hunter15478 I don’t understand your reply. What am I missing? As retired GIS utilities mapper l am knowledgeable about maps, layers, and terrain features. Do you know something I don’t?
@bill-winke5 ай бұрын
There is one layer "Topographic Quad" that shows more detail but you can't zoom in very tight on that. Those the maps we used when I was a boy, but you had to order them the USGS. Have a great day.

10:40 why cross their path why not just setup on top of that hill and let your scent go over your shoulder back down the hill?
@lonniechartrand5 ай бұрын
Poor stand location? You have to have a good tree or stand site that may mean you HAVE to cross the trail! With Bill’s example, the scent is crossing the trail only ONCE, and in DIRECT LINE with his stand, and the wind taking the scent down hill. You should have an arrow in the deer before he crosses that point.
@fluish68735 ай бұрын
@@lonniechartrand I’ve tried that in the past and it’s usually a doe or a buck I don’t want that walked past me and blows until the spots ruined
@bill-winke5 ай бұрын
Ideally, you would sit on the downwind side of that trail right on the edge of the bluff, but in this case those trees are all small cedar trees. I have to cross the trail to get to a tree big enough to hold my stand. As long as you don't touch any brush with your legs, you can get across a trail without leaving scent. Again, I probably should have just shown the stand on the downwind side of that trail for illustration purposes only even though I can't actually hunt there. Good point.

@bill-winke bill, have you read Brad Herndon's Mapping Trophy Bucks? He goes over alot of the stuff you went over in this video
