Very fun film! It's got a muscular blonde guy, a grizzled veteran, a gorgeous redhead, a fighting tiger, a fighting eagle, creepy flying allies, a savage spike-armoured enemy, unnerving witches with sultry bodies, withered faces, and raspy voices . . . about the only places it DOESN'T match up with MOTU are 1) the ferrets, and 2) the main evil sorceror is a lot more Gargamel than Skeletor.

*You're also wrong about there only being one of Skeletor.* Check the first minicomic out. We quite clearly see Skeletor is one of a race of skull people, who tried to invade Eternia though an interdimensional portal.

In the German audio dramas Beast Man was once a brilliant scientist from a highly developed civilisation until Skeletor conducted some fringe experiments on his brain. Thus he became the stupid and obidient henchman of Skeletor. The German audio dramas had a lot weird backstories like this. I personally like to think of Beast Man as the archetype of the wild man from the woods. Like Bigfood if you will. I imagine something like Beast Man being this dreadful monster-man from the Vine Jungle who was recruited by Skeletor when he came to Eternia from another Dimension and was looking for some fearsome evil warriors in his quest to conqure Castle Grayskull.

Another excursion into the German Audioplays for you, Scott. Beast Man is one of the few characters that received an origin story in those. But 1st things 1st: He is Skeletor's servant (while Trap Jaw was Skeletor's bodyguard). He was dim-witted but a dangerous foe and a regular in the early episodes. Later on he was faded out to feature other characters. In his very few returns he had a differnce voice actor and became totally stupid. The power to control animals is never part of the stories. In episodes 16 & 17 Webstor finds a tablet which contains formulas by some ancient magicians. Skeletor knew it from years ago. Beast Man is instantly frightened. Webstor gets curious about Beast Man's warnings and tries to find out more. But Beast Man doesn't really remember anything. However, Webstor has a way to jog his memory. He takes Beast Man to the forest to introduce him to some sort of Spider. Interestingly enough Beast Man is frightened of Spiders. The Spider's venom restores Beast Man's faculties. Originally Beast Man was a scientist. The greatest scientist of his people in fact. The species remains unnamed. Skeletor discovered said tablet once before. It was Beast Man who took it from him. He tried to destroy it but that didn't work. He could change the content however and threw it into a volcano (that's where Webstor found it). Skeletor got to him. He tortured him and destroyed his mind, making him the dumb Beast Man (Beast Man's words). Unfortunately Webstor can't restore Beast Man's mind permanently. But he's plenty scared, especially once Skeletor puts his plan in motion and actually turns to He-Man for help. Webstor's portrayal in that episode is also quite interesting. He considers He-Man and his friends enemies. But he's a creature of nature. His Spiders aren't cruel, they have their function and contribute to a healthy life in the forests.

@@spectorcreative1872 The Red Beast design was factually part of the design process for Beastman. The other 2 were actually preliminary design sketches that Mark did while working on the Conan IP. This was before Mattel decided not to go ahead with that IP. They were done around the same time as his work on MOTU but they are not preliminary designs if He-Man and Skeletor. Mark has mentioned this in several interviews, where he talks about working on the Conan IP around the same time that he was working on the MOTU IP. In the german audio plays from the 80s, Beast Man was the the smartest scientist of his race. When he uncovered an ancient stone tablet and realized it actually was an instruction for a machine to melt the pole caps, he altered the plans, rendering the machine useless. When Skeletor found out about the machine, he tortured Beast Man over a long period of time so he would restore the blueprints - without success. As a final step Skeletor messed with his brain - turning him into a loyal, but stupid subject without any memories of his former life. Skeletor: "Beast Man, you are a fool! Which, however, I am not entirely innocent of." *Hey Scott, if you are ever interested in doing a video about the canon of the german audio cassettes, I'd be glad to help! ^^*

@Spector Creative I find it strange that you did not mention the Image Comics 2002 MOTU BeastMan Icons of Evil. That run of comics gave an in depth look as to how Keldor recluted Beastman. The Icons of Evil were the individual looks and backstories of the evil warriors with as said Beastman, Triklops, TrapJaw and Merman. On the TrapJaw story it changed the mini comics origin of Kronis and how he became TrapJaw, giving him a heroic change after Keldor change to Skeletor but only after he tried to take over and Skeletor banished him. He had joined some warriors and amassed a force to attack Skeletor only to be defeated and blasted in the face by the much stronger Skeletor and had Triklops save his life with the cybernetics, but a funny thing that Trapjaw was not supposed to be able to live outside Snake Mountain for a long period of time for some reason. On Beastman, it showed that Keldor was in the Berserker Islands and the King of those Islands was called King Trinok. All of the inhabitants were Anthropomorphic animals like Beastman, and he was part of the tribes. Keldor was shagging it up with a Tribal Cat Girl when a Wolf guy confronted him over the girl and in the fight Beastman appeared and killed the Wolf guy. Keldor praised BM and tried his almighty approach only to be stopped when Beastman said he would eat him. And they fought, and BM wiped the entire floor with Keldor even taking blasts from him straight on. They were both captured by beastmen that were pursuing Beastman, and they were imprisoned to be cooked for the King. Keldor proposed to help BM escape and when they got to the arena they fought and Keldor's power had become amplified by the talismans of a Beast Shaman that predicted to Keldor that he would run into Beastman and he would join Keldor. After they killed the King they ran away and BM with no were to go and being banished had no other choice but to pledge his alliance to Keldor. Those MOTU 2002 Comics were really good and dealt very deep into the mythos of Eternia and obviously were more for Teenagers and Adults compared to the cartoon itself that was slightly more toned down.

Whoa! That first sketch was by far in a way the best! I didn't really see the "Chewbacca" element at all. The mixing of "soft" (the fur) and "hard" (cold steel) complimented each other with deadly intent! It truly emoted an "evil" creature. (more so than the later "king" version.) Great stuff! An off-topic question I have to ask since I always forget. Who was more powerful...Skeletor or Hordak? Thanks for another fascinating show. \m/
@MungkaeX3 жыл бұрын
Hordak trained Skeletor in many continuities; but when battling they tend to be fairly equivalent in terms of power, assuming no surprise elements giving one the advantage over the other.

So, the jewel gives Beastman the ability to control all beasts and the Thunderians are a race of cat people. So, does this confirm that Beastman has the ability to control the Thundercats, which would then force Lion-O and the others to do battle against He-Man and his fellow Masters? Sounds like an idea for another crossover to me.

Why is The paint deco on the amulet that beast man wears poorly applied? It seems like a last minute rush job. It's thin with a lot of overspray that bleeds onto the armor he wears. Maybe it supposed to have a glowing effect.

I think you downplayed Beast Man's abilities when you talked about his battles with He-Man. Yes, he doesn't even begin to approach He-Man's level of power but Beast Man's still probably the strongest guy on Skeletor's side apart from Faker - he's hardly defenceless without his animal controlling powers.

Beast man was one of the few figures I didn't have in my collection as a kid. I did get extendar at a flee market. I didn't know his name because he wasn't in a box with his bio. I called him stretch. I didn't find out his real name until I saw him in a youtube video. I got a few of my He Man figures from the flee market. Every time I went there with my parents I would go off on my own to look for toys just like I did at any story we went to.

WOW, very interesting video :) I didn't know that Beast man came from a species of Beast men, and some of them were actually good. I also thought thought that his power to control animals was am ability he has and didn't know it came from his amulet :) He also had a very different origin from the He-man bible, who was a man that was transformed into beast man when he and Evil lynn landed on he dark hemisphere of Eternia. Awesome video, I like it a lot :) And hope that Evil lyin video origin is coming soon. Not much is known about her past, except from the Mike Young series. That she is the daughter of the faceless 1 and met Skeletor when he was Keldor and helped him reach the temple of Hordak when he became Skeletor.

*UNTRUE, factual errors once again from Scott.* Beastman was not the original main villain. See Mark Taylor's various interviews on this subject, you know, the man who actually invented He-Man and Skeletor for Mattel. He-Man was originally known as *"Torak"* and Skeletor was known as *"Evil Incarnate"* in his early sketches and was later renamed *"De-Man".* De-Man sounds a bit like Demon and is obviously an opposite idea to "He-Man". The idea of Beastman being the evil leader was invented by Don Glut, in his original draft of the early minicomics story, when Mattel asked him to flesh out the world of He-Man. Don Glut called this new universe "The Fighting Foe-Men". Later, this was changed to "Lords of Power" then the eventual "Masters of the Universe". Scott, while you keep claiming to be a "Toy Guru" you don't half make some huge errors when it comes to your MOTU history knowledge.
