How Did My Grandma Name the Most Popular Beer In Belize? (S12-Ep#5)

My son Josh suggested that I pivot the channel away from so much cooking and baking and instead I should talk about what goes into the making of different foods. For example, how are hotdogs and balogna made. I wasn't interested, but told him I'd think about it. As a settled in bed that night, I remembered a story that my mom told me about how her mom (my grandma) was involved in the naming of the most popular beer in Belize.....Belikin Beer.

This is what I found: "The origin of the name “Belikin” dates back to the ancient Maya Classical Period and means “road to the east”. This could also be referring to the eastward expansion of the Mayas toward Belize. It is believed to be what the native Mayas called Belize and connects Belikin with our Belizean heritage."

Remember that Barry had German brew masters from Europe come in to get the heavy flavor of the brew started.Later on, the Turcios, from Honduras, first the father and years later the son, were the brew masters.Today the heavy European taste has been replaced by new brew masters who have lightened up on a flavor, making it more akin to the light north American flavor of beers.It took a while to get used to it's new taste, which initially didn't have nice comments to say about it. Used to think it compared to the piss made drank iby the major beer companies of north America.Miss the old heavy german flavour it once had.Believe the new brew masters, trained in north America introduced the new taste and flavor.As far as beers are concerned there are a few European brews like Heineken that's hard to beat out in the taste department but strongly feel the best beers are brewed in the Amigo country north of us.Now the name of our local beer most likely has a Maya origin. "Kin" in Maya refers to the sun, rising in the east, while the prefix refers to the muddy Belize river that flows from the west towards the sea and the east.
