Hello everyone! As you know I've been in quarantine for 2 months now, and this video came out at 29th of April 2020 so you might find it strange seeing me on the street. This video was recorded in mid February, 2 months ago, when it was still possible to wander about hehe. Strange how things rapidly changed. Hope you enjoy this one my friends. Stay strong of mind and spirit, and stay safe! Cheers!

Since the topic of who made odin the allfather pop up i had a random thought some months ago that went along the lines of who the father of thor would really be? If Tyr was the original storm and wind sky deity that held the power of lightning would that make him and jord aligned in some way shape or other? Ive also read sources putting odin as the son of thor?

Thank you for making this video, confirming my suspicions haha. I’m not nearly as well studied as you of course, but in my limited research I have not found amongst the findings of common people of the Viking Age evidence that they worshipped Odin. (Thanks also for mentioning his old English name, Wednesday makes so much more sense now, “Wade-nes-day”) That being said my gut was telling me he wasn’t the chief God. As you said it’s been mostly Thor, Freya, Freyr and Njord amongst the common folk. Otherwise we’d see more raven necklaces or Helm of Awe necklaces(I don’t entirely know what necklace would have been worn to represent Odin so just throwing possibilities out there)than we see Mjölnirs.
@Supermanrs
@Supermanrs Жыл бұрын
While I am not 100% certain I believe the common necklace pendants that are used to represent Odin is as you said the raven, a spear head, Or an axe head. At least these are the most common ones I have come across in my years of following the Norse traditions. I also completely agree that the worship of Thor seems far more common. Given the vast number of mjölnirs that have both been found by archeologist and portrayed in movies and talked about in books when speaking about Norse paganism. So much so that the act of wearing a mjölnir by a heathens is on the same level as a Christian wearing a cross. It is without a doubt the most recognized symbol in Norse paganism in my opinion. Blessed be and may the gods and goddesses always have your back.

I suppose when the people are evolving from one stage of material existence to another then your Gods evolve too. In Norse agricultural society their gods and goddesses were appropriate for the expression of their circumstances at that time. When the the pagans began to prosper in the new agricultural era they realised its limitations too. Not everyones needs could be met via food produced locally and they began to think how people could prosper through other means, they decided to go on adventures, explore various parts of the world and go on raiding enterprises. Such changes in circumstance, thought and culture needed the Gods and Goddesses to evolve too. The pagans were preparing for raids and wars they needed a god who gave expression to the these circumstances, Odin Warrior God, Odin Allfather. Thank you, Arif, for sharing your knowledge.

@जय भोलेनाथ जय भोलेनाथ In norse mythology there are gods and goddesses. Today we are focusing on the evolution of the warrior God Odin to a new status of Odin the AllFather. Perhaps it's a patriarchal shift in norse culture that favours warrior lords/elites to promote a warrior society. Odin as Allfather suggests to me he is the king of the gods and that norse culture in regards to their gods is now hierarchical and Odin is a the top of the hierarchy. The other gods and goddesses were important too. But if you want to promote war and warrior like qualities within a Culture then your God has to reflect that shift in cultural mindset, thus Odin evolves.

Before this, I was working to entertain the notion that perhaps Odin and Tyr were one and the same. It is very interesting to hear you say, towards the end, that the two deities were "blended" when Odin's worship came to Scandinavia. It is even noticeable in the myths that Tyr has a marginal role, and diminishes in appearance as the tales progress.
@ds698
@ds698 2 жыл бұрын
I think you are on to something, I feel Tyr may represent Odin when he was younger as well as the entire religion being younger during times of tribal strife, when honorable battle was the common code, also why would Tyr have a close relationship with fenrir, yet Odin is to face fenrir at Ragnarok and Tyr is to face garm the wolf of hel, which might be the same wolf honestly. But I digress.

Indeed deities of the earth and linked to fertility aspects were far more venerated in the past, and that is understandable since such deities are older than the various Indo-European religious creations, so they stick around longer, besides, the religion of the elite is one thing completely different than the folk beliefs of the majority of the populations, so the older always tends to survive in a greater geographical scale.

Fascinating! As a side note, do you have any recommendations on the history of brewing in your area? That chewing berries in a group setting, related to a "special" drink sounds very much like some ancient techniques for brewing using grains that don't easily malt. These cultures got together and prepared the mash by chewing the grain, or small balls of dough, to use saliva to trigger the conversion of starch to sugar. South American Chicha and Kuchikami No Sake are two examples.

Anyone can practice the old Norse ways. Just make sure to do it in a respectful way and you should be fine. I to am an American but I have DNA ancestry that goes back to many countries that would have followed the old Norse ways such as England/Northwestern Europe, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Ireland, and Wales. In my opinion you do not need to live in one of these countries to reconnect with your ancestors from there and to follow their ways. Again as long as you do it respectfully I think you will find that no one will have a problem with you practicing the old Norse ways.

Odin as Storm God? Sheesh.. In almost every known Indo-European tradition, the Storm God is the SON of the Sky God (Daylight Sky), so Thor, not Odin. See Perkʷūnos; Slavic Perun, Hittite Tarḫunna, etc., carrying a hammer/club/mace, and with his name being cognate with 'thunder' in each language.. It is not odd that the Sky Father held seniority and was emphasized by royal court, incl. courtly poets. The assertion that the common-folk preferred "Thor, Freyr, Freyja,.." etc. is just baffling. From the archaeological/historical/toponymical evidence, worship of the Aesir and Vanir was an exclusive either/or, not an inclusive both/and. With Arith, it seems, one gets the cart-preferences of a modern practitioner, rather than sources and evidence.

But what about Tyr, the old sky God from the Indo European tradition. Tyr was the old German high God. You talked little about it. Tyr is a God of sky, justice, righteousness, thing/democracy and the only the war to protect this.

I think honestly Tyr might have represented Odin in his younger years as a warrior leader, then he evolved into the shaman warrior and elder all father, one of the Odin fetishes that a lot of company’s copy and sell which is cool cuz it spreads the word, but it’s Odin with his one eye a helmet one arm and the other is missing, now it may have been holding his spear or maybe it’s a interpretation of Odin was Tyr who not only sacrificed his right hand/arm but also his eye later on for knowledge, so it’s like watching an upgrade over time and Odin is always sacrificing himself in a way to better his people and his knowledge to save protect and gain for his people. It’s very epic!
