Things I love: Jessica’s voice, Georgie, Matt is a mechanical genius, sailing and traveling the world. Not so fond of marinas that charge monthly slip fees and leave our boat in the water, but, like marinas that refund the difference when we get back, and toss in free stands.

If it’s not too late, I would strongly suggest you switch your bottom paint to Hempel’s SilicOne. It’s a silicone based product that is non-ablative and 100% eco friendly. Principal is it’s so slippery, nothing will stick once you start moving again. I have it on my 53 and love. I can assure you after one year in the water, my bottom was almost like new. Just a suggestion I think you could benefit from. Cheers and hope to see you in the Med this summer.

Kudos to Matt for always staying even-keeled. Seriously, does nothing phase him? Setbacks and projects that would raise my blood pressure is just no big deal for him. Just hauled our 43' yawl, which was also bottom painted 2 years ago. Have had a diver clean the bottom every two weeks, so had a few small bare patches.. Was pleasantly suprised at the condition of the bottom. Me and my partner pressure washed the bottom, sanded it, and put two coats of anti fouling on it in two days. Back in the water in three days. Why weeks for yours, unless it has serious blisters, or other issues?
@MJSailing5 жыл бұрын
Some of it was weather...there were a lot of rainy high wind days that would blow sand our way, which we didn't want the chance of it adhering to the wet paint. Matt also needed to get the yard to remove the prop and it was hard to get them to actually come out to do the job. Plus being in the storage yard is half the cost of a slip, so we were in no rush, haha.

@mattjohnson67165 жыл бұрын
For short trips under a week, we can pretty much always find someone to watch her. Longer than that and we have to search a bit harder. Typically, you can ask a local vet and they'll give you leads. Matt
@MJSailing5 жыл бұрын
We also made the pact that if we could not find someone we felt 100% comfortable leaving her with, we'd scrap the trip to Asia and would have gone back to the US for three months to stay with family, bringing Georgie with us. Luckily a set of friends on the island (one whom is a vet, actually) recommended a family that takes in pets for weeks or months at a time...and they leave their dog there while they're away. We met with them and then went to their home to make sure we felt good about it for Georgie. Luckily they were great and we could set our minds at ease about that issue while we were gone from the Azores.

Non-boater question here...what is a "thru-hull" and why would one need a hole in the bottom of your boat?
@mattjohnson67165 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike. The thru-hull is a fitting attached to the hull where the engine can draw cooling seawater. The seawater flows through a set of tubes in a "heat exchanger" that run parallel to the engines coolant, transfers the engine heat to the saltwater, than goes out the exhaust. Matt

@@MJSailing Well, that's really a good thing for You. I was called to a buncha cracked hulls when straps didn't stay where they were supposed to, saw masts bent and rigging damaged with swinging when the hydrostatic actuation was everything but smoothly operated, had to replace shafts visibly bent with straps, saw stanchions and wedges failing after the straps were yanked out, and so on. Its not a regular thing but more often than one would believe all around the (European) Med where fees on the hard are low and prices for craning reasonable. NEVER ONCE SAID I PLANNED TO *RIDE* THE ELEPHANTS. I stated that I wanted to visit them at a sanctuary to play with them. Give them food and maybe walk with them to the river while they bathed. Chiang Mai is full of sanctuaries where elephants have been rescued from those horrible tourist traps. Here people will visit the sanctuaries for about $75 a person where they can help care for elephants there. We don't support the riding of elephants and would never even think of doing that.
