Do not use AI for thumbnails. It damages your channel's credibility. If you would use AI for the thumbnail, it's reasonable to assume that you wouldn't have any qualms about using AI for the script which would thus be full of false information

That bronze tablet is wonderful. It's full of the pomp and ceremony that bureaucracies inevitably attach to their more important acts. But then it ends with the Roman equivalent of _"according to the official records, kept behind the bike sheds."_ Looks like Roman addresses were even harder to specify than Roman dates.

I am trying to imagine a modern company or government organisation but in Ancient Rome. I guess besides the specialists in Law or Accountancy there would also need be a person or department in charge of figuring out how old was some guy from some Colonia overseas that counts time based on when was the last time a volcano erupted and things like that.

If the consulship system was used in bureaucracy, where was the AUC system used except for Rome's anniversaries? I can imagine historians would have found it much more useful than the consulship system, but the same can be said with bureaucrats too.
@jimmydesouza4375 Жыл бұрын
The consulship system is actually used for almost everything, including modern historians (though they equate it to gregorian of course). It seems ridiculous to us, but it's a matter of what you're acclimatised to.
@QuantumHistorian Жыл бұрын
You pretty much nailed it. AUC was used by historians and for odd celebrations, but otherwise not. Bureaucrats don't really need it. The only advantage of AUC (or BC/AD) is that it lets you know instantly how many years passed between two events, and which one came first, without needing to look up a list of all consuls. But bureaucrats don't deal with multi-year stuff so often, and when they do, it will almost always be recent years where they know who the consuls were.

I just want to point out that is is supposed to be "Ab Vrbe Condita", meaning from the foundation of the city. "Ab" means from. "Ad" means to, which I suppose could be used for counting years prior to the foundation.

@QuantumHistorian Жыл бұрын
Depends on when you take antiquity to end, which is a matter of nomenclature and convention more than anything else. But from 550BC ish to then would be doable, if difficult.
@ottolehikoinen6193 Жыл бұрын
@@QuantumHistorian that's almost unbelievable! But I guess Near Eastern and other coins could fill up the more difficult years.
@comesignotus9888 Жыл бұрын
Almost whispering: shouldn't it be "aB urbe condita", "from the city founded", rather than "aD urbe condita", "to the city founded"? (Besides, "ad" requires an accusative, so it would be "ad urbem conditam" - which is certainly not used in time records.) Thank you for your videos!

I wish there was a way to count years that wasn't connected to christianity somehow but is still relevant to western culture.
@ClassicalNumismatics Жыл бұрын
Even if you are secular, the dating system we use is more than anything a cultural historical consensus. If not a part of your particular religious beliefs, see it as a part of your culture.
@QuantumHistorian Жыл бұрын
You could use CE/BCE rather than AD/BC, but that's just using Christianity implicitly. In fact, by claiming that things post Jesus are "common" to all mankind, it's elevating the importance of Christianity even more! Still, sometimes making explicit references to Christ in things completely unrelated to him (like when talking about antiquity) is a bit odd so the work around is a reasonable option. But really, @ClassicalNumismatics answer is the best one. AD/BC, nowadays, has as much to do with Christianity as Santa Claus - they've far outgrown their religious roots to become a ubiquitous cultural reference.
