A Discussion around how time changed the world. Sharing the history of John Harrison and how he solved "The Longitude Problem" with an accurate chronometer. He would later be known as the inventor of the Marine Chronometer which sailors could trust to guide them anywhere. The question then is to look at what innovations have come from such a simple device. The modern GPS is one of the most important. In watchmaking we have seen how the GMT and World Time Complications have been built on the foundations of understanding different timezones.

Without a shadow of hyperbole his H4 changed the world . Prior to it Navigators were literally guessing at longitude when out of sight of land and his invention solved the problem . Your most educational, accurate and succinct video to date . From an ex RN Navigator .. thank you ;)

Came here because I was reading and Harrison's chronometer (and its importance) was mentioned.

Sadly, the wristwatch has become more of a fashion statement than a tool and the history of some of the greatest timepieces is lost to the pages of history. From the invention of the wristwatch to ultra precision timepieces is almost gone. Thanks for the video!

IDGuy, you seem to bring a topic just at the right time for me and my thought process. 3 weeks ago I was discussing the types of watches I want to collect. These are different than the watches I want to wear. To wear, I have a daily wearer with a few alternates, a few dress watches and I am waiting the arrival of a tough knock-around watch. But, to collect, I wanted to have a theme. I had decided, multi-time zone watches were useful , interesting and had quite a few different ways of showing multiple time zones. Here are a few interesting and more affordable ones.

As someone who was taught navigation using a sextant and time, this really resonates. Plus I am fascinated by World Time complication pieces. Great well thought through presentation as what you rightly say a miracle breakthrough courtesy of the humble watch, more bragging rights for our interest!!

“longitude” is a great book, which was made into a very good film starring Jeremy Irons and Michael Gambon. I’d highly recommend both.

Speaking of John Harrison, Charles Frodsham was kind of the successor of him.

Excellent video as always demonstrating good design is not just materials put together in a pleasing and functional structure; it's the ideas it represents also.

I don't know if I'd say a watch is a simple instrument, though it does perform a reasonably simple task. I'm a sailor. I've got all kinds of expensive electronics on my sailboat, and can give you more information than you need at a glance. I dive. Gotta computer, can tell me to the foot,my dive profile, every tiny change of depth, and bottom time to the second, then gives me the surface interval i need, and tells me when its it's safe for another dive. I still wear my dive watch. I work my dive tables, after every dive, then check the work by the computer. I sail by compass, and play with the sextant, and watch. I try to navigate by the stars. I still wear the watch. It's a tangible representation of the time that is continuously passing us by. I've got a smartphone, it tells me the time, the day,and the date. I still wear the watch. Awesome video. I really enjoy your posts. Keep them coming. My love for watches started at the age of 6 when I got my first Casio.
