I’ve seen this temp sensor “hack” before. It used to work on the very early versions of emission controls (I’m talking about the Denoxtronic adblue pump era). Back in those days, you basically had zero emission monitoring until the exhaust had reached a certain temperature. So if you had some sort of active fault on the exhaust system, for example “Nox levels below threshold”, or “EGR low flow”, you could simply delete the fault, and the ECU wouldn’t re-check the fault again until the exhaust had warmed back up. As soon as the working temperature was reached the ECU would see the fault and the EDC light would illuminate again. So here’s where the hack comes in. You delete the fault, and remove the temp sensor, no exhaust temp = no emissions = no EDC light! Of course you had to keep the temp sensor wiring plugged in, otherwise the ECU would detect an open circuit on the sensor. It was also a good idea to plug the exhaust, either with a blank, or an old temp sensor to give the impression nothing was tampered with (and to not gas yourself to death). During low exhaust temperatures, the engine would also use zero adblue as well, so haulers could save money by never having to refill their adblue tanks too. Engine manufacturers got wise to this hack years ago by updating the software to monitor the engine coolant temps, vehicle speed and engine load/running time to work out roughly where the exhaust temp should be at any given time. If the new software noticed that the exhaust temp never moved, even though the engine had been running, it knew something was amiss and would flag up an EDC light “exhaust temp parameters” or words to that effect. Hopefully that explains why that was left out, but the bottom line is, it doesn’t work anymore.

I've been binge watching your vids and love them. Shocking! That the sensor was not even fitted in the exhaust but not uncommon as I had some main dealer Muppets leave the NOX sensor out of my Sprinter exhaust with the wiring loom hanging over the exhaust claiming that the Chief Muppet that worked on it encountered some rust on the threads. Total fabrication as I threaded it in by hand and tightend with a spanner. I feel for customers that have no knowledge of vehicle systems and repairs because repair shops with no integrity will BS their way out of shoddy service and use smoke and mirrors as their main diagnostic skills

I may have an explanation for why that sensor was out - I have seen this problem before where it’s deliberately taken out , loosened, pipes to dpf pressure sensor loosened off or removed to relieve the pressure in the dpf , or to take it out of limp , had a few where this has been done then the car is sold on , cars coming to me and then im scratching my head as to what’s going on - crazy but it happens in this trade - very dodgy and It’s wrong - top work jimmy as always - keep up the good work , I’ve learnt a lot from you even being in the trade also so thankyou 👍

I had to replace the exhaust gas temp sensor on my Qashqai last year. Who on earth designs these things as the sensor was hidden at the back of the engine and almost impossible to get to. Had to remove offside front tyre, remove the plastic wheel arch guards, under the car, reach up full arms length and just about managed to reach it. After 11 years on the car, it was damn near welded into the exhaust and I had to cut off the wiring, cut off the probe to get a nut removal socket on it. Then, after a liberal application of WD40, I used a 24 inch breaker bar to get the remains of the sensor out. The relief when it eventually broke loose and I could get it out. Popped the new sensor in and car fixed. And yes, I do my own maintenance as in my experience, garages just don't take care of your car the way you would. Fair play Jimmy for another fix that someone missed......like how can you miss a sensor hanging loose from the exhaust?????

a lot of the smaller 1 -3 man garages only want to do the stuff most owners could do themself if they had a hydraulic lift, disks-pads, exhausts, drop links, wishbones, tie rod ends, etc when it comes to anything technical most of them don't have the equipment and wouldn't know how to use it if they did, it's down to the fact that apprenticeships dried up during the 1980s and everyone became a specialist at one job only, AC repairs, clutch replacements, tyres and exhausts, I've lost count of how many times I've gone to a garage and asked if they can repair something only to be told "we don't do that" and they refer you to someone else who does, Ok everything gets fixed eventually but the journeyman mechanics are now of the past, except for a very few like you, college and knowledge are everything, day release and block release are just distant memories now,

I had a job in a couple of weeks ago a Mazda 6 that had been into Halfords for rear brake pads and a couple of days after noticed a scraping sound when reversing? On inspection the lower bolt was missing from the caliper and it was scraping the inside of the wheel! It's not the first time I've had to put right a Halfords cock-up though? No qc on their services obviously?.

Good job mate, I have one question.. does this clean ash??? Just watched a few videos of yours and you don’t mention anything about the ash content. Thanks
@ORileysAutos
@ORileysAutos Жыл бұрын
There is a lot of talk about Ash in the DPF and I can give you my view and what I have found. Ash accumulates in the DPF over extended use, as the incombustible material left behind following filter regeneration and soot oxidation. The ash consists of various metallic compounds originating from lubricant additives, trace elements in the fuel, and engine wear and corrosion products. The above statement is correct for what is called Final Ash. After the contamination has been burnt up this is what is left behind during the normal operation of the DPF. Cutting open a DPF reveals a super hard coal type of solid at the back. It is a combination of what has previously burnt and is very hard almost unbreakable. You can see that it has been exposed to very high temperatures and can withstand any amount of heat. Taking the DPF off and washing it through will do nothing to it. Some argue that the very biggest pressure DPF cleaners may remove some as it forces through the perforations and knocks some out. But, generally it will not be dislodged. This builds up very slowly. Final Ash can be at the back of the DPF taking up some room but the DPF is still serviceable and works fine. If the DPF has been re-generated many times, often by forced regeneration, this causes more Final Ash to build. Most Silicon-Carbide DPF's have a serviceable life of around 250,000 miles. At that point, you may have a DPF that is nearly half filled with Final Ash and then it is un-serviceable. This is rare, because of the amount of mileage needed to build this much up. This is not to be confused with loose ash formation, which is an ash created by the burn procedure. For instance, the wrong oil is used, which is not low SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorous and Sulphur.) During the burn process, oil is dragged up from the sump, burns in the cylinder and Sulphated Ash is formed. This fills a DPF very quickly, is not hard like Final Ash and can be removed, once the incorrect oil is changed or the problem fixed. Please ask any further questions that you may have and if I know the answers I will help. Best regards Jimmy.
