Funny thing is, you can analyze materials and techniques all you want, but in the end it takes an artist to do a masterpiece, never a technician 😂 very insightful videos btw 😊

Instant subscribe, I asked all my art professors in college for the technical aspect of how old Masters did flesh tones, and was always answered with how the impressionist and Fauvist did flesh tones, it was frustrating ,I'm not trying to flatten the picture plain!!!! so to see a video with this as it's content, I was very happy to see

Beautiful demonstration. "Neutralizing" is such a crucial concept in working with color. Great tip about lead white protecting Madder Lake. 👏 I just saw the Titian show in Boston. They are so much more when seen life size!!!! Like movie size dreams, theatrical productions. If only one could be alone with them!!!!( For longer time )

Still remember seeing two similar paintings of Titian and Rubens in Prado Museum (i think it was St Sebastian). Titian's version looked more serious and spiritual while Rubens's looked like it was painted with candies in comparison hah. Titian was one of the greatest painters of all time along with Rembrandt IMHO. These earthy, harmonious and limited color palette make their work look so natural and real, like you want to touch them and smell them. You actually need 4 colors to make a great painting- white, yellow brown, vermillion and black. Some call it Apelles palette.

I am so thankful for you and your incredible knowledge. I dont care about modern techniques of painting, I want to learn to paint like the old masters! I have learnt 90% of the things I know from you. I know I can always trust what you say because I know how much time and research you put into your videos. So thank you so much, i was so glad when i found you. P.S. you are an incredibly talented artist.

i learned a lot from this video but it seems to focus mostly on the flesh highlights. The hard part of painting flesh is the mid-tones and the dark highlights (for example the facial outlines of the Vendramin Family). i'd like to see these colors addressed too. Thanks.

There’s a book I have about Henry Raeburn in which it discusses Raeburn‘s use of black. It states that, based upon analysis he mostly used charcoal-black. Amongst other uses the “dense shadows were made by the addition of red.” The question is which red or reds . Fascinating topic 😀

Thanks for another excellent video. I have a question: When you or books or technical documents refer to 'Umber' (for example i was reading one called 'Paint handling in Leonardo's Mona Lisa - OpenEdition Journals') ... does this mean Burnt Umber or Raw Umber? i've found its not always made clear and Umbers are of course very different.

As I was told at art school back in the day... ‘Whilst Titian was mixing Rose Madder His model reclined by a ladder, The position to Titian suggested coition, And so he leapt to the ladder and had her...’ Titian, a painter who had his aims well ordered...

Thank you for the video. Do you know how William Bouguereau painted flesh tones? I'm very interested in his technique but didn't find any clear explainations on it. I wonder if he painted a green "Camaïeu" (like a "grisaille" but in green) then applied a glaze mixture of different colours? If you could make a video on his technique that would be great. :)

According to the director of the Gallery only the faces of the adults at the top in Vendramin are painted by Titian. The boys (awkward 3 on left) were attributed to 'studio' also known as assistants. There is a 'fake or fortune' episode specifically talking with the director about different levels of completed large artworks including this one. If the whole was done by the great man then it was called 'autograph'. If most of it was done by studio assistants and topped off by the artist it was called 'studio' but would be signed by the artist. Hope that helps.

Hi Louis, I'm also an artist of many decade's and thoroughly enjoy your videos. Just want to mention and don't know if you have heard of it, but there's a wonderful paint called "Flake white replacement." I won't mention the brand so as to keep everyone protected. It is lead free so it's very safe to use instead of lead white and has most all the qualities of it. You can look it up and the leading art stores carry it. I've been using it for years and love how it handles. You may want to add some mediums like a good stand oil etc. Titian and many of the old masters would love the supplies we have today. Thanks again for your in depth studies here. Take care Artist forever 🙏😍 🎨🖌️🖼️
