The World Bank has said that water shortage is the biggest threat to Vietnam’s red hot economic growth. Hundreds of thousands of households in the Mekong Delta do not have access to clean water, relying on rivers and streams. But these waterways are contaminated by agricultural, household, and industrial waste. As a result, the Vietnamese government states that 80% of diseases in Vietnam are caused by polluted water.
Meanwhile, climate change and rising sea levels have caused saltwater intrusion near the coast, and floods in the cities. What is behind Vietnam's water woes, and what can be done to fix it?

Thank you CNA Insider for this valuable information. Throughout the video, learning on how Vietnam people have no clean water, specially clean drinking water, also for farming it's alarming. At the end of video learning about the Vietnamese government developing water saving and treatment technologies, to clean the water, it's a relief. We hope the government continues with their water treatment technologies to provide clean water to the Beautiful People of Vietnam.

The problem is not that they are using groundwater, the problem is that they are not reusing it by having a plant clean it. You can use and reuse the same water millions of times, but they don't. They need to invest in technology that can clean the water.

@tsrmmercy836

Assuming everyone in Vietnam collectively stops dumping trash, feces, urine, chemicals of unknown usage or origin, hard metals, etc; the same problem will still persist. Upstream nations that control the majority of the delta and rivers will still contribute into the equation. This problem is complex and can only be solved if the people analyze it as a complex array. What I mean is that I has multiple factors that contribute to the final result. Even if upstream usage is somehow fully purified the water sources are exposed to natural elements and bacteria, vulnerable to any human tampering as well as providing for only the bottom segments of Vietnam. It is unlikely the corrupt Vietnamese government will invest anything of quality into its southern counter parts. The solution that may glorify Vietnam into its next era, is if it turns to the East. It will take enormous investments and dedication as Vietnam has never innovated past small-scale projects, but a larger scale research operation of oceanic water purification at cheap cost, if successful will lead Vietnam into an ever-expanding future of tech dominance.

Recycling and filtering are very, very expensive. even wealthy Singapore can only provide 40% of their fresh water through recycling. Dams block sediments which was what formed the river delta area in the first place. Lack of sediment contribute significantly to coast erosion and salt water incursion. Sediment also provide soil nutrition as the video mentioned. Fresh water problem have solution, but nothing will solve erosion.

Vietnam needs to practice condensation of water. They probably have much humidity. The water cannot be seen in the air, but it is there everywhere waiting to be condensed to water for everyone. The Incas in Peru practiced this through their circular terraces, condensing humidity to water their crops and using these circular terraces to get drinking water into a basin at the bottom of it. Today, there are newer ways to condense the humidity. Use this resource in the air for your water needs.

Would a simple solution be to encourage households to install gutters on their roofs so that they could collect the abundant rainfall? Fresh rainwater can be channelled directly into mosquito-proof tanks to be a reserve for periods of less rainfall, thus improving resilience. Capturing water from a fresh source is much easier and safe rather than from exposed or pollutable areas such as rivers and lakes near to farms and towns. There is also the urgent need for public education about how to respect Nature and to avoid pollution in the first place....in all forms....land, water, air, and food....

I wonder if instead of filling the ground when raising the level of the homes, if they can repurpose that space as a water reserve. So when it rains they can collect fresh water from the roof and have it funnel into what was previously the first floor. Then instead of relying on ground water as the main source each household can pump from their own reserve first.
@yevonsama
@yevonsama 8 ай бұрын
Some houses practiced it, but not many. And they don't use one floor to store water. They usually build a small pool on the house' roof. That is why the pool can't build too huge, because when it is full of water, it is very heavy and will break the house. But your idea may be a good idea. Use the first floor as the pool.

Seems problem is actually due to farming methods used, water treatment, management, usage and control rather thandue to climate factors. Vietnam has always had a subtropical/Monsoon climate much the same as that in Thailand, Cambodia,Laos, Myanmar which do not have these issues despite flourishing agricultural/export sectors. Perhaps training sessions with neighbouring experts would impart the required knowhow quickly and efficiently.

Vietnam is facing a water scarcity crisis that is becoming a significant threat to the country's economy. With a growing urban population, the demand for water supply is putting pressure on existing infrastructure. Water scarcity has become a pressing problem for Vietnam, with contaminated water causing 80% of diseases, especially in rural areas. Vietnam's GDP expanded at a rapid 8% in 2020, but water insecurity could become a significant hindrance to its economic growth. The World Bank has called it the biggest threat to Vietnam's economy. Vietnam's water resources depend heavily on the Mekong and Red Rivers, which are under serious threat from climate change, dam construction, and pollution. The Mekong is the country's lifeline, but it is also one of the world's most polluted rivers. Industrial waste and agricultural runoff are the primary sources of river pollution in Vietnam, which contain harmful substances such as heavy metals and pesticides. Only about 35% of rural households have access to clean water, and arsenic contamination is another significant issue. Arsenic has always been a problem in Vietnam, and long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking water can lead to various health problems, including cancer and cardiovascular disease. The mounting losses from Vietnam's water scarcity crisis could be significant, with estimates by the World Bank suggesting it could lead to a 6% decrease in GDP.

@@ResortDog While the geopolitical influence of the CCP could certainly have far-reaching effects, it's important to recognize that Vietnam's water scarcity crisis is a multi-faceted issue driven by a combination of factors. The country's dependence on the Mekong and Red Rivers makes it vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, pollution, and dam construction. The dire consequences, including economic setbacks and health risks, underline the urgency of addressing this crisis collaboratively, focusing on both local and regional efforts, rather than solely attributing it to external influences.

Thank you for talking about the negative aspects of Vietnam. I am weary of the pervasive pollution that affects every aspect of the environment, including the air, soil, and water. The government seems to offer no viable solutions, instead exploiting the environment through extensive mining operations. Their relentless pursuit of industrialization has rendered them blind to the consequences, as they prioritize projects aimed at boosting GDP without considering the declining quality of environment.

We don't have access to town water.I have had to have the bore made deeper twice now, as the water level drops.
