In this video:
On June 7, 1912, Lieutenant Roy Kirtland took off from a field outside College Park, Maryland in a Wright Model B, the first aircraft ever purchased by the American Army Air Services. To his right sat Captain Charles Chandler, a Lewis light machine gun cradled between his legs. As Kirtland banked the aircraft 300 feet over the field, Chandler took aim at a white cloth banner staked out on the ground below and opened fire. It was the first time in history a machine gun had ever been fired from an aircraft, and it proved frighteningly effective, with a full 12% of the 47 rounds fired finding their target. The age of aerial warfare had begun, and the world would never be the same again.

@Bud Grimfield maybe they could make an interrupter like forward mounted machine guns that shoot through propellers safely. Ill have to look that up. Definitely would suck to find out my rear gunner got us killed. Im sure they are probably trained to always be aware of your aircraft tail wing just like soldiers on the ground being aware of not firing if a friendly soldier or civilians are in front of your field of fire. Human error im sure was a problem sometimes
@joehemmann1156
@joehemmann1156 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know for sure, but it seems like the easiest engineering solution here would be to make the gun mount incapable of dropping to a flat enough angle to hit the tail. At that angle, it could also hit the wings of a biplane and would pose so much threat of a gunner tracking a target and then accidentally shooting his own airplane down that the greater firing arc just wouldn't be worth the risk.

Not very much by the time a bullet goes 2000-3000 m all the propelsnt is used up and it is essential just a very W aerodynamic brick as most of the time shots were angled say at 60 degrees form the ground so they would build up enough speed and any explosive shell was fitted with self destructing fuses so say 15 sec after firing it would explode
@yungdomino4718
@yungdomino4718 3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewgraham6006 bullets aren't self propelled, especially not those fired out of aircraft armament. Any bullet fired will fly until it can't. An uninterrupted bullet will go between 1000 and 6500 meters. Shells had self destruct fuzes, but it wad specific ammo for specific guns. Not every gun in the war. Most guns fired regular rounds

At the time that credit was given to Captain Brown for the death of the Red Baron, the ballistics of the kill were not yet established. Since the guns on the Sopwith Camel flown by Captain Brown used the same caliber of bullet as what killed von Richthofen, and Captain Brown was a commissioned officer vs the Australian gunners being noncommissioned members, Captain Brown was given the credit. Basically it's a matter of "He's got a higher rank, lets give it to him to feed our egos." As a Canadian I'm proud that Captain Brown faced the Red Baron, but I respect the Aussies and know that they were the ones that took down the best Pilot of that war.

I know this! Near the start of the war, Germany had "synchronized gear" that automatically prevented their machine guns from hitting their propellers, even when they were shooting through them. The allies did things like nailing metal plates on the back of their propellers, until near the end of the war - they caught up and developed a gun-propeller synchronization system themselves, like the Germans had.

Apologies if this was answered in the video, but did the system work in a way it would trigger the machine gun between each blade, meaning that the machine gun firerate was correlated to the prop rpm? Or was it simply a yes/no switch that would interrupt the constant firing of the machine gun, meaning it could theoretically fire multiple and varying times between blades?

If I remember correctly, the propeller shaft was linked directly to the safety on the gun which means pilots could gain a greater rate of fire by increasing engine revs, usually with the age old dive bomb,

Actually all the earlier models such as the Fokker, Saulnier and Vickers-Challenger took their mechanical drive from the oil pump of a rotary engine using a push-rod design.

Interestingly, the Me 109 and Yak-3/9/9U had a 20 or 30 mm cannon firing through the propeller spinner centerline, eliminating the need for a gun synchronization system.

Problem: Thumbnail plane is a much later Soviet YAK fighter. The USSR didn't exist as an official state until after WW1. Fighters made during WW2 almost always had their machine guns mounted in the wings, controlled by solenoids and few of them have interrupters like WW1 fighters that almost exclusively had nose-mounted armament.

Hi Simon, huge fan. I have a question. What are the job requirements to work security somewhere like the louve or Guggenheim museum? Given that the Mona Lisa had been stolen before by a guard I would imagine there's quite a few hurdles to work security at a place like that

Seriously, a lot of planes did not have rotary engines. Like SE5, Fokker DVII, Spad VII, Spad XIII and all the Albatross planes. While most people think of the Sopwith Camel and Fokker DrI when they think of WW1 planes they were not the majority of planes. To quote the Red barons last words: "Kaputt".
