Great video! Thanks for being the voice that us Dinosaur fans needed. This film is an achievement in filmmaking, due to the number of things that they had to do to make it happen. They spliced together real world environments to make brand new ones, and the animation for the dinosaurs themselves still holds up. They even used a real fog machine for the scene where Aladar and his family are fleeing the island, and they inverted the footage to give the scene more realism. The soundtrack is one of Disney’s best, and the film was ahead of its time. I aspire to have many of the good qualities that Aladar has: leadership, compassion and selflessness and the film is a great example of determination, teamwork and love. Schaffrillas just needs help from the Love Monkey!

I've honestly always enjoyed Dinosaur. I like how the story is different than a lot of kid movies and relies more on interpersonal and political disputes as the driving story more than just plot or main character development. I can see why others find it boring, perhaps, but that doesn't mean bad. It has a lot of complexities to it that I think you can appreciate more as you get older. And I don't know what it is, but I like the visual style as well. I have no detailed analysis on that, I just personally like the way it looks. *Shrug* Also my mind was blown learning that this movie lead to the creation of Maya. That alone should give it more merit in existing than Ralph Breaks the Internet (which is my personal pick for Worst Movie. Like, at least Black Cauldron can look cool and has a neat villain. Ralph 2 has nothing but sadness.) Anywho, nice video!

You did a great job with this video, iy's very prfessionally made. I love how you delve into the technical aspects of the film. Even though the CGI is pretty dated, it definitely revolutionized 3D animation to this day. And I agree that Kron is more of a tragic character or at most the secondary antagonist, rather than the main bad guy.

​@TheNahum no, he is the main bad guy because he affects the story, characters, and the themes more. The carnotaurs were just essentially plot devices that drive some of the story forward, but don't challenge the characters or add to the themes nearly as much as Kron. Also, just because Kron was intended to be tragic, doesn't mean it comes off that way in execution. Being tragic because he believes his ways are right sound more like a delusional narcissist than a tragic character. The same could be said about Hitler. He was intending good things for people and did what he thought was the right thing. That doesn't mean he isn't a villain. Kron was shown to not care about the safety or lives of any of the herd members, and was willing to let them die if they slowed everyone down, and don't say because they're animals, because they are capable of emotions and sophisticated things like people, and that is how they are treated in the movie! In short, Kron IS a villain and a generic boring one at that. This film may not be the worst disney film, but it certainly is nowhere near a good movie. I watched it when I was young and watched tons of times after, yet I still find the characters and story and writing to be generic and terrible. This is not a good movie. It wasn't liked when it came out, and not even the filmmakers liked it. It was considered a waste of potential by its creators and the decision to have the dinosaurs talk was also hated by both the filmmakers and critics and audiences. Just because it was technologically revolutionary does not mean it was an objectively good film. I'm also sure Schaffrillas was talking more about the execution as opposed to the ideas and intentions. They all fall flat when you realize that they were done in the most derivative and cliché way possible, which ended up making most the film pretty boring. I understand and agree with the sentiment that is was boring because it was so predictable and generic. People don't talk about the themes and intentions because we don't need to. Why care about that stuff when they all fall so flat in execution? This film is only subjectively good, but in terms of writing and delivering a good story with engaging characters, it fails.

I remember watching this movie a bunch as a kid since it has dinosaurs in it and dinosaurs are the coolest things ever to a six year old, but I haven’t seen it in something like a decade and a half so my memories of it were hazy at best. When Schaff listed it at the bottom of his Disney list I kinda felt bad cause I figured that it was just a case of me being a small child and not having any taste in movies, but it’s really nice to see someone talk about the technical achievements of this movie and it’s legacy with such passion. I’m looking forward to Schaff’s angry response to go along with the link in his community tab

Wow this is great! Love all the history and vintage footage. I used to read a ton of Jim Hill Media's disney blog back in the 00's. He would often talk about Dinosaur's troubled development and how the 2D animation was FURIOUS that it was responsible for the creation of Maya, which essentially ended 2D mainstream animation. Heck the film still looks pretty impressive 20 years later.

The influence of dinosaur shines through a good amount of animated movies made so far. The black coldrun had interesting ideas that were not projected that had the chance to captivate the audience. I think I want to do a rewritten version of the story to fix some story points.

The carnotaurs hunting much further north is probably one of the movies least egregious inaccuracies. The existence of lemurs and brachiosaurus during the KT impact are far more insulting inaccuracies.

Dinosaur is one of my top 3 movies ever made while I acknowledge its flaws. On a technical level it’s still impressive, the details on the animals, the composition of CGI characters into live action backgrounds. The way you can see Bruton’s muscle shaking as he tries to get up; the jiggling of Baylene’s legs side to side whenever she takes a step. People can dislike it but putting it as the worst Disney movie ever made is very misguided.

@@TheNahum I freely admit to growing up with it, it came out when I was five and I was a dinosaur kid, but even as an adult I still really enjoy it and can really appreciate it. I don’t feel like it’s nostalgia because I think nostalgia is when you are reminded of something from long ago; I have watched Dinosaur regularly the last 23 years so it’s always fresh in my mind if not omnipresent. And I just find a lot I enjoy in it. The Lion King is still my definitive movie, Dinosaur is like #3.

I checked this out after a jerma clip, gotta say, I have absolutely ZERO interest in Disney and movies in general, but your content is very high quality. Like, as someone who's edited videos for a while for a crappy channel project when I was teenager, I know how long it must have taken to group THIS much fucking footage and screenshots and plan it out for a long video. On top of that, good writing, the editing must have taken ages, and your mic is great, while your voice is easy to hear. Unusual for small channels. Due to my complete disinterest in movies, I won't sub, but I do wish you success in the whole "movie essay" genre, you seem to more than deserve it. Good luck chief. :)

I recently rewatched this movie since honestly I haven’t seen it in years but I remembered as a kid I adored it but now that I’m an adult and saw it again after who knows how long. I actually enjoyed it. Yeah sure the film wasn’t perfect by all means (heck I wouldn’t consider it as my personal favorite Disney movie by that matter) but overall I can respect it for what it is. I do think the monkey characters were fun and lovable (I think Pilo was my favorite character in the film) and the animation was quite impressive for it’s time.

Dinosaur had some tone problems but when it was darker it was brilliant. The asteroid, the oversized carnotaurs, etc. When you average out the pluses and minuses, I'd put it above the meh Tarzan, lol.

We only get surface level wants/desires based on some of his goals and misbeliefs, but, it seems they didn't have time to crack that egg because of the audience the movie is geared toward (And Kron isn't the main antagonist, but he is still an external opposition toward Aladar, so he is a personal antagonistic force toward him based on conflicting ideas of how to lead the herd, who to care for and how, and of course the romantic subplot of Mira being around Aladar). Every character believes they are the hero in their own story.

The black caudron easily deserves the worst movie-title, I mean it is called for a reason as "movie that almost killed Disney". The marketing at the time was essentially "we have this huge money put into this movie, so much time and resources oh man you have to come watch this thing yourself". And in the end the movie got...well, less viewers than expected. Because lets be real, the plot, characters and even animation wasnt exacly Disneys A-Tier here. So my point is a movie with this much advertising and money put into it has no right to be this bad.

WRT Y2K, it should always be noted that the reason nothing much happened was because a huge amount of time and money and person-hours of work was poured into _making sure_ nothing happened. It could have been a problem if there wasnt a concerted effort to make sure it wasnt.
