When you talk about Allergies you should know it's not that simple, Hygine Theory has been discredited & replaced by the "Old Friends" hypothesis, a distinction must be made between good & bad bacteria, it's not about a lack of exposure to all, including disease-causing, bacteria, but a lack of exposure to helpful kinds we co-evolved with. The microbiome, the newest set of biological discoveries. “We know an awful lot now about why our immune system’s regulation is not in terribly good shape, and it’s got absolutely nothing to do with hygiene,” says Graham Rook, an emeritus professor of medical microbiology at University College London. Today, epidemiological, experimental, and molecular evidence support a different hypothesis: Early exposure to a diverse range of “friendly” microbes-not infectious pathogens-is necessary to train the human immune system to react appropriately to stimuli."

That's because these are male subjects and technical. The best a woman can do is get married to a man like this. He may help you in this area. So long as you are loyal and give him children. Say four kids minimum. Look at that. Matchmaking is the the way. If you want more women involved then matchmaking them to a man who can teach her is one way. These subjects involve truth. Women and truth are very much at odds. Women don't seek truth on average. Men do. Women who do seek truth are a Girl Boss and highly masculine type. Basically a lesbian or bisexual. The "I don't need no man" mindset. So go and matchmake. House wives used to do this. They used to matchmake single men to like minded women . In churches.

"Phobia" in general has lost it's meaning. Fat-phobia for example, implies a fear of being overweight. They are not afraid of fat people, they simply have preference, but this has been given the label of fear. Second example, islamophobia, implies a fear of Muslims. There are definitely examples of people being fearful of Muslims and keeping their distance from them which is a phobia, but there are also many examples of people exerting hatred toward them, yet they are both given the same title. Fear did not cause an increase in attacks on taxi drivers in NYC. Anger did. When was the last time you heard an arachnophobic (a true phobia) actively hunting spiders and desiring to do so? What hydrophobic hates the idea of swimming rather than fears it?

Interesting on the "...your grandpa fought in WWII..." comment. My grandfather was an army medic. Went ashore at Omaha on D-Day, went across France, getting mortar shrapnel in the back of his shoulder, some of which was never removed, and was part of the first relief column into Bastogne. He saw more than his share. Later in his life, when I was young, my mother told me never to go to him with bleeding boo-boos or owies; he'd damn near faint at the sight of someone else's blood. EDIT: I probably should add to clarify the story, he got that shrapnel by running into a courtyard to help two other GIs that were taken down by rifle fire; just as he got there, the mortar arrived. He awoke hours later to a man standing over him asking in French if he was alive. My grandpa replied in French (my family is from Louisiana), "I'm cold". The man put his jacket over him and went and found some other GIs to help. He spent a few weeks recovering, then was back on the frontlines in time for the Battle of the Bulge. Sometimes what disgusts one can be put aside or get amplified by circumstances or experiences. That's the point I was trying to make with the story, but it seems for some it must be directly spelled out. Thankfully, most seemed to get it the first time.

That is *precisely* the sort of othering people do. I'm not kidding, I litterally hear people say things like "if only they had common sense" or "thought differently" You aren't thinking any differently than anyone else, from the homeless, to "normal everyday" people, to ghandi, to Jordan, to hitler. Everyone I've encountered is the same in this respect, even I'm not different, try as I might. And I see it as a problem requiring drastic correction. This isn't the usual about "everyone has a voice" it is rather "your voice has as much unproven value the same way everyone else's has no objective value" A small difference, but a profound one. If I'm looking to make the world in my image, I wouldn't do it because I'm right, no, I know precisely I'm wrong, and I do not care, moral superiority is merely an excuse, and more importantly, a weapon, to use over other people to get them to submit to your will. (I once found out that a bunch of people only get this far in thinking and stop. For whatever gosh darn reason, instead of continuing.) .....or we all compromise when we all realize the futility of the game, or rather the futility once everyone understands the game. The best option is not to play. At the very least if you're going to still be assertive that you hold superior civility in discussion in such a new society built off of such a compromise, then should you be surprised when asked why you should be given bigger priority? Given the mic for more time over others? And then, I suspect, no matter what argument you come up with, there will always be a counter, nothing will be definitive. I understand this because I already see it in practice in the present. Folks don't necessarily want equality so much as self-power for themselves. Rare is the time when I find someone who actually supports the causes of other people with no benefits to themselves. It would seem so simple, to simply say yes to anyone who would support greater freedoms for all people, and completely suppress anyone who would ask for "freedoms" at other people's expense. But we then slot them into an otherness box, once again. And so we have a description of the tolerance paradox, intolerance is intolerable. I have yet to find any suitable philosophical position through that paradox to this day. However, it has occurred to me that perhaps memetics has a role to play. If a particular ideology is superior, it might find a way on top over time. And we wouldn't have to think about it, no thought put to othering anyone. If it so happens however that an inferior (by whatever metric let's not go there), is what attaches to the majority of the public, then we have a real problem. One in which we can't select which memes to propagate, properly. Do we have the ability to fix that to be able to select them wisely? If we can, can we then get a consensus on it? See I suspect in practice you just end up with a few individuals claiming they know the right way to have people be able to select the right memes. Maybe it could work out in practice and we have it down to a decentralized science...but I worry about such a thing being hijacked. To avoid such a risk, since we might very well be incapable of solving this problem ourselves, it being beyond our current limits, it might just be we can't think about it. That no matter what sort of belief systems spring up, we ignore them, and just see what happens. See everyone and everything gets lost to history eventually in the grand scheme of the universe (if it even has a scheme), and all our bickering is petty for it. There is something to be said for not getting trigger happy for every little thing. And so I ask myself, what categories are people going to yo label each other tomorrow? Do I even care? No, I care only about the fact they do it so pointlessly in the first place. Stakes, you say? Millions of deaths? You mean the millions of deaths a year that always occur no matter what for thousands of different reasons? What's the real stakes that could mean a damn to me with that in mind?

I also tend to think there is a bigger divide between authoritarians (those who either want to have absolute rule or feel safer if ruled absolutel), and libertarians (those who believe more in freedom to do what you want as long as it doesn't harm others). Of course very few people are all the way to one side of that spectrum, but most will at least lean more one way than the other. I believe the divide is greater here because you have both authoritarian orthodoxy on both the right and the left, as well as libertarianism on both sides. Left and right disagree about the methods, the small details, the individual issues, where as authoritarians vs libertarians disagree about the bigger picture. I, as a right libertarian, many times can have a better conversation or debate with a left libertarian than a right authoritarian. Whether it be the authoritarian lefts cancel culture, required acceptance of diversity and restrictions on speech or the authoritarian rights hyper religious views, demands for purity, and trend towards a police state, I am equally disgusted with both.

As a gay man who grew up in a relatively homophobic time, it really took me a while to grasp how some people just find homosexuality gross in a simplistic, primal way. A lot of the high-minded intellectual political debates we have about gay rights, and the purpose of marriage etc etc can mask the fact that some people just genuinely find the idea of two men kissing physically repulsive in the way some people find worms or rotting meat physically repulsive. Learning this has helped me understand where a significant chunk of homophobia originates, but in a way it’s also kind of a depressing revelation since people often have a hard time overcoming their primal fears. That said, it’s definitely progress that “ew it’s gross” is not an argument that society considers valid to make in public anymore.

@martinezequielconberse6908 Жыл бұрын
The problem is that I think that a large number of people didn't stop thinking that two men kissing is disgusting when the whole gay rights thing came about, it's just that they started to pretend that they didn't find it gross anymore because it became socially costly, I have seen it myself with people that say that they are ok with it in public but in private it's very different. Unfortunately when society forces people to pretend that they belive something that they don't it creates resentment and it's never fun when accumulated resentment releases, so I think that a lot of what people consider "progress" is just a mirage and we will have to deal with the fallout eventually.

For what it is worth, I am not gay, but also grew up in a time where homophobia was quite cultural. High school boys would call each other "fag" as a friendly insult, or worse someone that was different the same, even more unacceptable. We didn't know better, but then again, high school kids are stupid, and nothing is ever going to stop that. About 10 years later I had a really good friend that was gay, and learned to totally tolerate it. He was (sadly for him) in the closet which I know was purely a conditioning of this very thing that kept him in that closet. He often hit on me when drinking (and then some) but I just tolerated it. He eventually came out and is OK today. I learned to not see him as anything but my friend. I have other stories now too. Still though the idea for me of being with a man still is completely unappealing to put it mildly, so is the idea of being with women with certain characteristics. It is just human nature and I think we should all just accept that this is OK, at least up to the point where we don't take any sort of action on it.

11:50 That's kind of a surface-level reading of Buddhism. For Buddhists, "disgust" or "aversion" is just another kind of Craving (taṇhā), specifically it is defined as "Craving for non-existence" (vibhava-taṇhā) and is just as much of a hindrance towards spiritual attainment as Craving for existence or for sensual pleasure is. The goal is Equanimity (upekkhā) in one's reaction towards all external and internal stimuli, not aversion.

Nice clarification. It's well said. Buddhism is explicitly not a form of nihilism, and it'd be good to know that before making that remark so off-handedly. To be fair to Rudyard, I think the essence of his point was that it emerged in a "disgust sensitive" culture, which is fair enough. Dispensing of caste and welcoming in any manner of person who was capable of practice was certainly counter to the culture at the time and a remarkably wonderful thing. So he's not really wrong, but just lacking his usual depth and precision.

I'd disagree about racism in the modern day. Disease pools are only part of it, much seems to be a product of the most basic driver of evolution which is DNA wanting to propagate "like" organisms. It's the reason we favor our own kids over cousins, our cousins over distant relatives. Just extrapolate that out enough and add the large gaps that exist between certain groups.

Anyone who tells you racism is a bad thing hasn't really thought about it, they've just swallowed and accepted societal indoctrination. I agree with your conclusion, but not your reason. I think much of the heightened not only racism, but every other -ism you see today, is because of hyper polarization in politics, education, and media over the last 20 years. More than ever, we are being pushed into groups of our own kind and being told either we are the bad guy, or some other group is the bad guy. They fein a desire for "diversity", yet in practice push more segregation than ever. Terms like "cultural appropriation" are an example. 20-30 years ago, you could do something that would be considered an identity of a different culture and that was okay, today you are shaned for it. That's just one example but there are many. This kind of thing has bred resentment, clanism, and even hatred at the extreme levels. People are quite simply afraid to associate with different cultural groups now out of fear they will say or do something that is deemed offensive or otherwise frowned upon. People are afraid to speak freely or have open opinions out of fear of retaliation by "the mob". Many facts aren't even mentionable if they put a particular group, especially a minority group, in a negative light, again out of fear of being branded racist or bigoted. Being restricted in these ways had made people resentful of these groups, therefore in a sense defacto bigots. In this environment we all feel more comfortable around our own kind because we don't have to worry as much about our actions offending someone. This is a bad place to be and this, in my opinion, has forced society to become less accepting of differences, ironically, after such a hard push to force acceptance. My belief is that in this push, guilt and fear has been used rather than proper education, experience, and compassion. For me personally, I am going to first sympathize with, which will lead to accepting, a group different from my own more by learning objectively about them, rather than being forced fed orders to not speak certain words, ideas, or be allowed to dress like them, eat like them, etc. Hence why I didn't think this push for supposed diversity of thought and diversity of culture is even true, rather an elaborate rouse to further divide us, make us hate each other, and therefore give more power to those in control when they say "You can't even get along, this proves that you need more control".

Your understanding of Dharmic spirituality and the concept of Moksha or Nirvana is totally wrong, this process is not about rejecting the disgustingness of the world but coming to the understanding that all things are one, its actually the complete opposite, in the Gita, Krishna says that the Muni (who has realized the truth) does not see the difference anymore between the different beings or between Brahmins and Shudras. The practices of Brahmins who keep cleanliness is only in order to devote themselves to that study, its not an end goal. In a prior video you described the Dharmic worldview as being negative, as in describing human nature as negative or disgusting while the Christian worldview describes it as positive, this is the complete inverse. The Dharmic worldview sees the divine as the essence of all things, all castes, all animals all plants etc. Everything is of the Divine essence and is in actuality a part of the divine and it is the illusion of seperateness that prevents us from seeing this. Christianity on the other hand believes in original sin, believing that the world is corrupt and needs to be destroyed and created anew by Christ

Chapter 1: Introduction to Disgust Disgust is a biologically ingrained and involuntary emotion that is part of the human condition Disgust drives a significant amount of human history and culture, shaping how we live our lives, build our societies, and wage war Women tend to have a higher sensitivity to disgust compared to men Chapter 2: The Role of Disgust in Society Society's leaders must be aware of their own senses of disgust and know when their intuitions are correct The development of civilization involves molding and controlling our senses of disgust in order to facilitate cooperation with larger groups of people The industrialization and World War I led to a shift in disgust sensitivity, moving from high disgust to low disgust in wealthy countries Allergies are a result of living in environments that are too sterile, causing the immune system to attack things it should not Chapter 3: Disgust and Politics The political divide can be explained in terms of disgust sensitivity, with conservatives tending to have higher trait conscientiousness and left-wingers tending to have higher trait openness, which is correlated with lower disgust sensitivity The right is often driven by disgust towards change and certain lifestyles or ways of life, while the left feels little disgust towards these things The rise of political correctness can be explained by the suppression of internal disgust, leading to a focus on external disgust towards the actions and words of others Chapter 4: The Implications of Disgust Disgust can be a double-edged sword, with positive and negative consequences Understanding disgust can help us understand why certain societies and political ideologies develop and how to address their flaws It is important to find a balance between suppressing disgust for the sake of cooperation and allowing disgust to serve its evolutionary function of protecting us from harm. @DevashishGulati
@DevashishGulati Жыл бұрын
Because the Westerners (or even some "know-it-all" Indians these days) oversimplify Indian society, which leads to them being completely off the mark sometimes. There is indeed a direct relation between hygiene and disgust with the caste systems, but there is a lot more to it. Also, it hasn't been consistent in history on how rigorously it was practiced across different kingdoms across India, or even in the same area. Not to mention the caste system started much later among people who had the same gene pool, based on what they do, not race. Even afterward, different castes were usually not separated by national/kingdom borders. At the very extreme, they had segregated villages, but even there, marrying within the village was considered comparable to incest. Relating it to races and racism is absurd, yet more and more people do it. It is the same damn race! Not to mention, India also has had a fair share of rule-breakers even in the most revered epics of Hindu civilization, like the Mahabharata, where the supposed upper-caste Bhima had kids with Hidimba, who was not from the same caste, or upper-caste Karna being raised by a lower caste family. Do I expect this guy to know nuances like this on his own? No. Do I expect the Indian intellectuals settled in the West to talk more about them, so that the westerners get to know about them? Yes, but they seemingly have taken the easy path of showing the most disgusting or radically different things from our culture to the world, or being the conformist yes-man, so that they can personally gain more in the shortest time. There is no regard whatsoever for how the world sees us after their short-term gains. For example, Slumdog Millionaire has normalized to the world the things which are not normal in India.

There is no evidence that skin color inherently causes a "car alarm disgust reaction" in human beings. Black and white children reared in integrated environments register the visual difference of skin color in each other but do not avoid each other, as one would expect if different skin color were an inherent, ingrained marker of danger. An ingrained fear of difference is what triggers disgust, not skin color per se. If people are accustomed to seeing many skin colors, then skin color ceases to be a major source of disgust, because it is no longer a marker of foreignness.

This is certainly one the most interesting, comprehensive, and provocative videos you have produced. The contrast between disgust and envy as paradigms for understanding much of the modern political landscape is invaluable. Also, your explanation of how alien populations often introduced diseases that killed untold numbers of people (e.g. the Black Death) goes a long way to help us understand why racism and xenophobia where logical responses to the way things were before modern medicine.

a small correction, allergies did exist historically, they are just significantly more common in the modern world, the current hypothesis for the biological reason for allergies (this was actually a paper that has been published recently, this year (2022) iirc, I think it still needs to be peer reviewed, but it seems pretty sound) is that many of the foods that are typically allergenic are typically the ones most commonly found to have trace amounts of Toxins on them, with a those Toxins having a chance to rise to lethal levels, this is supported by evidence that people with allergies have a slightly higher tolerance to Toxins.

I’d disagree about your point here. I think in the case of the british east india company versus english colonialism, the fur traders, and even to some extent the conquistadors it is more that the goals of the settlement than the female/male ratio that changed the interactions between different racial groups. It is easier to make a profit if the out group is helping you compared to if you are having to fight them for the land you are trying to exploit. In contrast, once settlers started to come to these colonial holding with intent to make homes there and spread their culture so to speak, it is no longer beneficial to tolerate things that disgust them, to follow your thoughts from the video. Yes, there definitely is an element to women preferring order to chaos in a society, but there’s also a big confounding factor that up until recently women were often prohibited for being involved in business ventures. As to taking mistresses and associating more with people of out groups, its more of a matter of availability. Humans are social creatures and we have an evolutionary drive to procreate. People are going to want to have sex and if they are in an all male society with females in an outgroup in the same area they would have two options to fill that need with other people, both considered disgusting in your video: homosexuality or having sex with women of the outgroup. Thus people have to choose between the two. I’d be curious if there was a higher rate of homosexual behavior in these isolated male dominated colonies.

The male fur-traders / frontiersmen obviously weren't all that disgusted by the natives as evidenced by them taking native wives. Similarly, slave owners in the Americas regularly had sex with their female slaves (ex. Thomas Jefferson & Dally Hemings) and had mixed race children with them. The average African American today is of 25% European ancestry as a result. The idea of simple racial distinctions is a sanitized mythology. But what is true, is that the men who colonized or otherwise held power these places were disgusted by the idea of natives/blacks/Jews/"others" having sex with THEIR women. It was never about women's disgust, it was about the men having power and establishing a social order with them at the top. Also, it's fair to say that the frontiersmen who live among the natives are very different people than the bureaucrats who colonized after them when it comes to openness vs. disgust.

@@MalcolmPoindexter I agree with this point. Basically you can sum up the world right now in terms of culture, diversity, racism, etc into one simple action and reaction... For the most part the mass media, entertainment, government, and everyone else in a powerful and/or influential position has been force feeding us "rules" on how to interact with each other, how to get along, diversify, and not be racist/bigoted/sexist/homophobic/etc. However these "rules" are completely wrong, and completely will have the opposite effect, and I believe this is by design. It is obvious people are more divided than ever, and groups are becoming more segregated and clanish than they have been in over 60 years or more. But think about it for a minute. We are given these "rules", that we mostly follow, then the end result is more division, disgust, and hatred. So then we are shamed, told we are bad people, and in order to be good people and get along, now more than ever we must listen to THEM, because THEY have been right all along and WE are just a bunch of stupid plebes. A perfect example is 30 years ago I as a white male would have been told "be color blind, don't look at that black man as black, but just as a man, another human just like you". And that's what I do, that's how I have always been. Now, all the sudden that is wrong, and I must accept, no, embrace his 'blackness', praise it, put it up on a pedestal, but God forbid never try to copy or emulate it lest I be a 'cultural appropriator '. What does that do? Breeds resentment. No, I am not going to 'embrace' any one else's culture or way, nor should they mine. How about we go back to the old way and just respect each other as humans and not worry about races, classes, religion, nationality, etc.

This is definitely interesting. I feel like disgust based on fear of disease doesn’t quite capture all the biological reasons for racism. I think tribalism and sense of loyalty and hierarchy also have biological roots. I think your brain probably has a familiarity bias intended to keep you safe by making you more comfortable with what you already know and trust and have previously interacted with. A sort of risk aversion to new things. Definitely a lot to think about though.
