I'm interested in how the original criticism for Beauty and the Beast when it first opened up on Broadway in 1994 has held up, since it does seem like Broadway is becoming more and more of a tourist attraction with more shows being based off of movies and jukebox musicals, as opposed to newer, original stories.

Give me Tangled on Broadway. I need the lantern scene on stage 🥰

I remember Time Square pre Disney. It was a lot like the Musical The Life. It was pretty shady.

Forever bitter Hunchback didn’t get its due. It is my favorite score and the Papermill Playhouse recording is a favorite.

Shocked by a bit near the end. There’s a potential Hidden Figures musical?! That sounds great!

Yes! Not sure where it is in development--but press came out about it in 2020/2021!

I'm with you in that I want stronger artistic visions on these works, like The Lion King. The source material is one of Disney's best, but seeing it on stage, even all these years later, still feels fresh. But everything after that hasn't been nearly that creative. But like you said, when lots of money is at stake, it's hard for companies to want to take risks.

Minority opinion: I really struggle with the translation of animation to the stage. I recognize the inherent difficulty but I can never get past the weirdness of various creative attempts at the live action equivalent and get to full immersion, though I find some elements more successful than others. Like in the Lion King, the Circle of Life is wonderful, but I literally roll my eyes at the stampede. I don't count any of the disney stage musicals among my favorites, though I'm still mad I never got to see Hunchback at PMP because hearing that score live would've been epic!

Odds are it will never happen but I would love to see a full length Mulan musical

I hope they won't do it like the live action movie lol

I'm still waiting for Finding Nemo the Musical to be on Broadway.

I would love to see Disney invest in an off broadway house. There’s so many shows they have developed that have never and will never be on broadway. King David, Hunchback, Bed knobs and Broomsticks, Shakespeare in Love, and Jungle Book. I would love to see some New swings too like Mulan, and Princess and the frog. (And can we dig up the cut Emperors New Groove music #BOPS!!!)

Fascinating! I also think BATB on tour to a potential Bway run could be really interesting--and oh my gosh our unsung hero: Emperor's New Groove! Where is that ROLLERCOASTER at Disney? it's just...waiting to be made.

I could be mistaken, but wasn't Encanto supposed to be in development for a live performing show, too?

Very interesting, thanks. Do you think Beauty and the Beast will return to Broadway if the tour is successful with the new production? I think it would be interesting to see Moana or Tangled on Broadway. Will be interesting to see how West End Hercules does.
@itskatharinequinn2 күн бұрын
I could definitely see that--but also really curious about Hercules' trajectory. And yes--I think Moana is in development as well? Feels like it could be so gorgeous--dying to see the Disney Cruise Line version!
