At my collision repair shop, I had a collection of real deployed airbags. Each one was cut from the steering wheel of a hard head on collision. They were framed and hung on my office walls because each one had a womans face in full makeup smashed into it. You could see all the detail like blush, eye liner, lipstick, ect. Even the surface of the bag was somewhat stretched into the shape of a face. My customers loved it because it was art taken from real life.

Air bag saved me two days ago… never been in a wreck before in all my 32 years… I don’t know if the impact or air bag knocked me out but all I saw was black for what seemed like 2 seconds. I remember hearing my daughter screaming and I opened my eyes and the air bags were already deflated. My daughter didn’t have a scratch on her and is perfectly fine. I’m not doing so well though, I have a bad ringing in my ears and a head ache that won’t go away. My mom is coming to take me to the hospital. The guy who hit me was doing 55-60mph in a 35 mph zone… regardless of all that, I am 100% sure that the airbag saved me from dying or being gravely injured…

First time I've ever had airbags deploy in an accident was today. I didn't go out, but the pop from the airbag gave me tinnitus briefly and my adrenalin was pumping hard! I've been in accidents where I went unconscious (skateboarding, vehicle) and know the feeling pretty distinctly- black out, groggy coming to. I looked at my phone for a second to check the time and was in the back of a car almost instantly. Hit, knew it was going to be bad, a white mass comes towards my face, my face goes towards it, I smell rank butt smell (thought something may have ignited but it was the smell of the airbag), jumped out of the car instantly, went to check on the other driver, called 911. It was a whole event. My face is slightly stingy now (felt nothing on impact) but I am confident I avoided a major head injury or death thanks to that white ball of fluff that caught me in my moment of need. I mean, I avoided a concussion and probably would have had a bad brain bruise (no bueno) otherwise. Jfc I love airbags!!!

I retrofitted a 'DIY airbag' into my vintage Ford Mustang (these cars were made in the days before airbags were standard feature in motorvehicles). The propellant used was nitrogen triiodide. I only closed the door and the airbag went off! Not only that, for an entire week my face was covered in purple iodine sublimate from the decomposition of the nitrogen triiodide; a facial scrub with dilute sodium thiosulphate solution eventually removed the iodine. Back to the drawing board.........

On the 2012 ram 1500 it hinges up. The airbags shears the bottom of the fancy plate from the steering wheel and the entire piece flips up behind the airbags then settles back down after it deflates.

Had an F350 run a red light and hit me in the driver door of my mustang. It was the craziest thing seeing the truck driving straight at my face the split second before the crash. The next thing I know I'm surrounded by airbags. Curtains, dash boards, seats, all over the place. Luckily I walked away uninjured just a little bit sore and some glass cuts.

The airbags main purpose is a Head and Neck device to combat basilar skull fractures. Which is where your body is seat belted the head is not. So the car stops, your torso stops, but your head keeps moving at the velocity you impacted at. The brain is tied to the spinal cord that carries electrical signals down your spine. It is very strong almost like carbon fiber and in a crash the head skull/skin will keep moving forward the spinal cord is anchored in the seat belted torso so the spinal cord attached to the brain will restrain the brain. The brain gets turns into a battering ram and it causes basilar skull fractures or (Base of skull fracture) because the brain gets yanked into the base of the skull at a high velocity. Almost like a sling shot shooting your brain. The brain it’s self gets turned into a deadly weapon.

@grassytramtracks

@@grassytramtracks If the airbags goes off when you have your hand over it, you'll punch yourself in the face at 200mph. That's why cars with airbags have hand "grips" either side of it. That is where you are meant to hold it. People have to have limbs amputated after airbags go off on them.

The first generation airbags were inflated with ultra toxic hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide explosive reaction. Fortunately, those chemicals are long banned from automotive air bags. The combustion trace residue of these chemicals was just as toxic, 100% carcinogenic and was a real threat when fire fighters needed to rip the bags to make extracating the injured easier.

Is an airbag _necessary,_ though, if one wears a seat belt?
@Asmodee1992
@Asmodee1992 6 жыл бұрын
yes, human body works like dense jelly, it bends aroud the seatbelt - legs and head fly forward, while torso is barely fixed in place. Thats why your cervical spine is rekt after a crash, you pull all the muscles and ligaments on the back side of your neck - whiplash its called. If airbag wasnt there, you would brake the wheel with your forhead. Plus in severe crash front of the car is getting deformed, so its moving towards you.
@Thwapwhacket
@Thwapwhacket 6 жыл бұрын
Necessary? Not necessarily. For decades humans survived vehicular collisions not only without airbags, but also without seat-belts. However, following the implementation of either and/or both...survival rates have increased. So not only are chemistry and physics important, but statistical mathematics as well. Or you could just walk/bike everywhere.

@highlander723 Yes, that is the ideal gas law. Boyle's law is closely related to the ideal gas law. P1V1=P2V2. It shows that pressure and volume are inversely proportional. Gas molecules collide with the container wall at a faster rate and raise the pressure, when the container volume decreases.
@Thwapwhacket
@Thwapwhacket 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but if you hold N and T constant (as well as the already constant r) then you can abbreviate them to an arbitrary variable "k". This allows you to to consider changes to volume (of the airbag) with respect to pressure, and vice versa. (also it is it's for it is and its for the possessive form)

@@ABitAmiss how new was the car? Modern cars don't deploy airbags in every Situation. Some even measure the weight of the driver and then decide if it's safe enough to deploy airbags.

@@lucariolps277 Interesting, I didn’t know that. It was a 2002 or 2003 Chevy Impala.

@@ABitAmiss hmm can't find anything about the airbags on that specific car but Yeah modern cars can do a lot of interesting Tricks with their airbags. For example a lot of cars measure the weight of people in the Front seats. If the weight is too low, the Airbag will be turned off. For example, you have a child in the Front passenger seat. That would cause the board computer to turn off the passenger side Airbag. Or certain cars only deploy airbags on required sides. Let's say in a roll over, only the side airbags deploy.
