Hand flying a large transport category turbojet aircraft isn't an easy task for any man or woman, Its not at all like driving a small car!! Whoever does it definitely deserves admiration for developing the sheer skills required for such a task!

KLM: Just wanted to clarify something, at 2:43 , "Less speed gives more control thus makes it easier to land". With regards to airplane controllability, slower speeds increase the amount of control input needed for maneuvers (climbs, turns, ect.). This is because there is slower air moving (due to a slower speed) over control surfaces making them less effective. This is a decrease in aircraft performance.

+American Airlines B777-300ER That is what I thought. But I think it is meant that you can do more accurate corrections than at higher speeds ... how do I put it ... imagine having to drive a slalom course with your car - that is easier at slower speeds.

Notice how I said with *regards to AIRPLANE CONTROLLABILITY*. Aerodynamically speaking, nothing incorporating pilot intervention. It's simply aircraft performance. Higher speeds make the control surfaces more effective, due to the increase in airflow passing over them. Anything that produces aerodynamic Lift is an known as an airfoil. The direct by product of Lift is Induced Drag. When you practice the maneuver slow flight, this become very apparent. When the airplane is flown near Vmc or minimum controllable airspeed, the flight controls will tend to have a "mushy" feel. Now, if your airspeed is well above that, and lets say your in a Mooney M20 blazing at 160 KIAS, a easy push or pull on the yoke will have a great effect. There really isn't much else to it. Thats pretty much with what I'm concerned with, I'm a pilot, not an aerodynamic expert or an aircraft engineer. As for driving a car down a ski slalom, I would't want to do that at a slow speed or a fast speed. Car's belong on roads, skier's belong on ski slaloms. What you mentioned doesn't sound safe, but if you want to go ahead with it, make sure there are no skiers on the slopes, and that you have good auto insurance. :) Take care!!!

American Airlines B777-300ER Well, I didn't mean a ski slalom, but a slalom on a road, marked by cones. Who would drive down a skiing hill :P Well, I'm no native speaker, so I apologize for not expressing myself clearly. And I know about the aerodynamics, I am an engineering student ;) still, as you say, at high speeds, a little push has a great effect - so I would think it would be difficult to correct the course - but let's not argue, shall we? Im a little confused with what you mean by "at high speeds it's difficult to correct course". That would have to do with airplane stability; either static or dynamic. But that topic, while super important, doesn't really need to be discussed because it would just over complicate things. So, if you could further explain the above quote, I can try to add further insight. I'll just say this, an airplanes stability is taken into consideration for the airplanes mission; what it is designed to do. For example, a Cessna 172 is a very stable airplane. By design, it always wants to remain in straight and level flight on its own. If it encounters a light amount of turbulence, the airplane will naturally return to straight and level without pilot input (other things held constant such as power, and airplane is within weight limitations, other factors also). Now take into consideration a heavy C-17 . This airplane is actually designed to be a little bit on the unstable side. Notice how the wings droop down, that is called Anhedral, providing the airplane with less stability. With the airplane designed to be less stable, this makes controllability easier when flight control inputs are made. Thats a very rough idea, obviously there is much more to it. Dynamic stability will explain the airplanes stability over time, static stability is instantaneous. There are three possible outcomes, Positive (airplane returns to stable flight) Negative (airplanes condition will continually worsen) Neutral (airplanes will remain in the new condition, it will not recover or worsen). There is the stated pressure difference, but it is a fact that the fastest moving air around a wing is actually under it... Yep!...And behind it as well.Otherwise a good video from KLM. Nice job by the crew and production team.-- Cheers

+Observ45er No. You have failed to grasp the aerodynamic principle of a wing. The shape of a wing forces the air flowing over the top to travel faster than the air flowing under it. Nature abhors a vacuum so the air is flowing over both surfaces to reach the back of the wing at the same time to keep a vacuum from forming. The different flow rates cause a pressure differential, i.e., high pressure under the wing, low pressure (due to a lower volume of air) over the wing, therefore the wing moves upward. One thing that wasn't mentioned is that rotation increases the angle of attack of the wing and increases the lift enough to allow the plane to climb. 70,000 Kg ! As it is said at the beginning of the video, that's can be the weight of a boeing 737. That means that the lift can keep such a plane up in the sky. That's simply a "miracle" ! The lift itself can keep up in the sky such huge planes as the b747 and the a380 too ! That's simply astonishing !

Congratulations with both thumbs way up to KLM, who's been operating since the 1920s, and Captain Andrea van Dijk , who very likely went thru the same ordeals all airline pilots must go through with the additional disadvantage that comes with being a woman operating in a male dominated arena. I was hoping that finally I would get an explanation as to exactly what happens in order to make a plane lift off, but, to my frustration, this video, like all the others I have ever seen, neither explains nor shows ( in the animation) what the instruction ROTATE ACTUALLY MEANS! I hear it is something to do with the stabilisers on the tail? If so, why the f does no video I have ever seen actually SHOW it? If the tilt of those tiny ( comparatively) little rear wings is the only thing that makes a plane lift off ( as a result of the instruction to "rotate", then why oh why do we never SEE it happening?

That was not a very good explaination of an aircraft lifting off. It would have been better had you said, "The curvature on top of the wing forces air to move faster, while at the same time pulling back on the yoke causes a negative camber on the horizontal stabilizer which creates a downward force at the rear of the aircraft which in turn raises the nose and exposes the lower surface of the wing to more air causing a drastic increase in air pressure on the lower surface while causing an even greater decrease over the upper surface. Together the forces result in enough lift to negate gravity allowing the engines to push the aircraft into a climb". The way you explained it, someone who didn't know anything about aviation would assume the aircraft will just lift off of the runway just from forward speed alone. Not to mention aerobatic and military aircraft often have a symmetrical wing which going by your explaination should not fly.

You're absolutely right. The only problem is that people who don't know anything about aviation don't understand anything about your explanation. It takes much more than just a minute to explain to people, why your explanation is right.

***** I aggree. Last winter I started teaching myself aerodynamic theory. That's in addition to my study as a glider pilot. I very well know how planes fly, but I also know how hard it is to understand. Though very poor, their explanation is a good starting point for newbees.

Wrong. Fixed wing aircraft fly because they deflect air down. The explanation in the graphic is bullshit. Equal and opposite reaction.

Flying a plane looks easy, but it is not. There are so many surcomstances, such wheater, wind.Become a pilot takes a lot of study and practish. Of corse a women could by a pilot as a man. If you have the skills, you can by a pilot, man of femail.

KLM think my first flight was in 1960s and then I have often flown KM now I well into my pension years and missing but today I would love be younger as I've see it is s much easier. Thank you to all the Captains and the pilots and co pilots for beautiful takeoffs, flying and landing beautifully. Wish you all happy and safe flying and for the videos showing the new aircraft Annie

So do the first officer and the captain speak english to eachother even when they are both dutch, or only in this case for recording purposes?

English is the language of aviation. In commercial aviation it's used in all communications between ATC and the crew to avoid confusion.

It's probably for recording purposes in this case, I guess they speak in dutch between themselves for the rest of the time. Unless they're flying within the Netherlands, they do have to speak to ATC in english though

I'm surprised people still use the pressure difference as an explanation of lift. It is simply not true. The shape of the wing deflects air downwards and according to newton's 3rd law the downwards force makes the wing go up.

+EpicGuyJC There is still a pressure differential, which also creates a force. How do you think the air "pushes" the wing up as the the wing pushes it down? the pressure below the wing is higher than above. By deflecting air down, the air is "pushing" harder on the bottom of the wing than on the top of the wing, the amount by which air "pushes" on a surface is measured by the pressure and the pressure alone, therefor it is still a pressure (differential) which creates the lift. That's not to say Newton's 3rd law doesn't apply, because it does, but its seen as the difference in pressure. another way of looking at it, in normal positive G flight, there air WILL accelerate faster over the top than over the bottom, therefor according to Bernoulli the pressure will drop more over the top of the wing. It doesn't matter how else one looks at it this effect occurs and will result in a force. they are 2 different ways of looking at the same thing

EpicGuyJC yeah that part is totally false, in normal flight the air going over the top reaches the trailing edge well before the air going under the wing, the air on top doesn't care about meeting up with it's old buddies on the bottom, nor does it have the capacity to

+Jamenator1 this is totally wrong most of lift comes from the Angle of attack of the wing some aircraft have symmetrical airfoils at 0deg AoA they produce no lift you can test this your self next time your riding in a car when is safe hold your hand out of the window and change the angle

Elios0000 yes i'm aware of that, the shape is just there for efficiency, AOA is what dictates the amount of lift is produced. Bernoulli's equation is that: static pressure + dynamic pressure = constant. (Ps+Pd=constant). As the AOA of a wing increases, the air flowing over the top of the wing will experience greater acceleration. Therefor as the velocity (dynamic pressure) increases, the static pressure decreases. Its not wrong, people think the Bernoulli theory is that the shape of the wing causes the acceleration, and yes to some extent it does, but yes, it primarily the AOA which dictates the lift. I never said solely the shape of the wing creates the lift, I simply meant that Bernoulli's principal always applies, regardless of AOA, Bernoulli's principal also explains why more lift is produced at increased AOA (below the stall AOA), and it also explains why negative lift is produced at increasingly negative AOA. So to sum up, yes AOA is the main determinate of lift. Bernoulli's equation says that if you accelerate air you decrease it's pressure, nowhere in the equation does it state how the air is accelerated, it can be accelerated through shape and/or AOA (with generally being the major player), it doesn't matter. Bernoilli's principal only explains what happens after the airflow is accelerated, not how is accelerated (again, through shape or AOA)

I like that when woman are working in the cockpit. That's a good proof for a modern society. I only flew one time with a female captain. With Swiss in 2019 from Zürich to Berlin ( Airbus A 320 ).
