How do Fluorescent lights work? calculation and P F Correction

Hi Craig, I thought the starter was normally open then closes when the neon heats up within it. Then when the Ne cools the switch opens and causes the spike voltage. Are you saying its normally closed?

its a simplified explanation. yes they start open, quickly close due to current flow causing electrodes to bed into each other, voltage shorts out to supply then cool and open again and allow now excited tube to receive full ballast voltage and strike..

Yeah I played it to my students and they looked baffled..... Epic fail 😔. I thought I'd broke it down enough. I really like putting it all together because the text books rarely do that but I'm not sure anyone else cares 😂

So is a ballast literally just a coil, or is it a transformer that steps up the voltage? Is there a way to test the voltages of a ballast? Or do I have to pull it all apart and ohm it for a short like everyone else shows in their videos. I came here just looking for the output voltage of a ballast. lol ... brought me back to my electronic days in vo-tech in 2000.. so I subbed

Its just a coil. Never tried to measure the output voltages when striking? I will have a think and get back to you

Most older ones. Modern ones have a hf unit all enclosed. If they have one they connect it across the supply terminals.
