How to find Morel mushrooms is everyone's concern. This episode will help answer that exact question.
/ @yappography
The 4th Chapter in the Morel Truths Series. This episode is what everyone has been waiting for, how to actually find your own morels. This series will walk the viewer through the fungal jungle and into your kitchen where you learn the best ways to eat and preserve your findings. No exact locations will be given on where a successful hunt was, but the details of the conditions it was found in will be discussed thoroughly. The intent of this film is to inform as well as entertain and can be used as a how-to guide on finding your own Morels Mushrooms.

I've been hunting mushrooms with my dad my entire life and I'm 16. We live in Indiana and we just walk back on the property and find them. Dead elms,sicamore, ash, those types of trees, but once we get our patches they keep coming. It's a fun practice really.

Wow love this video, super informative. My partner and I live in KY, we have cultivated fungi but also love foraging. Last year we found 40 lbs of chanterelles. @padger2577
@padger2577 5 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but this is terribly inaccurate temperature information!!!! Those temps are too cold. The man with the John Deere shirt on doesn't know what he's talking about and he's spreading misinformation. I've been hunting morels most my life, and 32-40 degree nights do NOT produce morels. You want to go looking when it gets up around mid-60s day and mid-upper 40's at night. Once temps are around there for a week or so the first morels will start showing. The big yellow morels like it even warmer .70-80 degree days are great for those. 50-55 degree nights. In my neck of the woods here in Va, the single best telltale sign they're up that I've found is to watch the tulip poplars. When their leaves get to be about 1" or about the size of a quarter it's time. Mostly pure tulip poplar stands covering a creek or hollow are my favorite.

Mayapple is our best indicator their up and old tornado paths are great producers. Ridgeline is a great place to start and when you find some,head to the bottom of the hill and look back up it. we have over 10 different trees here in mid Missouri that grow morels, but our best are ash trees & most are always live, the dead or dying trees produce a big fruiting because it's the last year or 2 they're going to be alive, I've been picking around the same trees forever, I know my spots like a perfect map, & every time I pick a big bushel around a tree I've been picking around forever, I usually notice it's dying, then in a year or 2, when it's fully dead, it quits fruiting any morels, I explain that in my videos, though I have enjoyed your vids, but people need to know it's mostly a live tree that grows them, the dying tree is just putting out it's late shrooms

We mostly find morels the spring after a forest fire, otherwise I only find the inedible ones.. One thing I've learned, there are no hard and fast rules for where mushrooms grow. In our area people look for Pine mushrooms mostly for export to Japan, don't know what the appeal is. If it's a poor season you can make a lot of money IF you can find them. With a name like that you'd think they grow in Pine forests, and they do, BUT in our area they grow under Hemlock trees. I occasionally find them under Pines but their's always Hemlock nearby. They're not suppose to start growing until at least Oct., but on a very warm late summer walk, after a dry season, I found a perfect one growing right on the side of a trail just as I was explaining to an Australian about the mushrooms. People's jaws dropped when they saw me carrying it.

Once in my life I came upon a entire hillside covered with false morels [Gyromitra Esculenta] all around dead pines. A very rare moment in California mountain foothills, @3000' evevation. And they never returned again. If you dry them and then boil them a bit before cooking, seem to be safe. But there are a wide variety of opinions on it. My family in Slovakia always ate them and seemed to live too long for their own good.

One thing that I very rarely hear people talk about is Morels and Spruce trees. Even pine trees too. I live in Southern Ontario, and I find a lot of morel mushrooms near Spruce and Pine. If there is a large spruce tree with grass around it, I almost always find a few Morels near that tree. Or checking just on the outskirts or the very inside of a spruce or pine Forest. You won't find the motherload, but I can always count on five or more around a large spruce tree in Short Grass. In my front yard, I have three large Spruce and pine trees and I always end up getting about 30 to 50 Morels each year in my front yard. Here in Southern Ontario, Spruce and Pine, large apple trees, dead and dying elm trees, and I've even found them in Maple and Beech Woods and in Cedar stands. People say cottonwoods, poplars, Shagbark Hickory, but I never have luck in those spots

Thanks very informative although you neglected to discuss preservation & sustainability and possible extinction from over harvesting. 1. Use a knife only for harvesting as merely pulling them is disturbing the next season network. 2. Take only what you need. 3. Leave a good percentage behind. 4. Take a moment to thank the Earth for her bounty. Doing these 4 things ensure future plenty. Happy Hunting!

Mid-March through mid-April is good morel hunting season in southeastern Missouri. As of March 30, we've had two weeks of off and on rain, two days in the 60's and 70's, a few warm nights, and down to 46 degrees last night. Yesterday we saw the mayapples up, about half opened and fully umbrella'd, meaning that the blooms are going to form rapidly. Today and tomorrow we expect to find morels and mayapples blooming. Found 250 of them over an acre of woodland last season. You have to get to them early in the morning, too. Our land is predominantly oak, with a few cedar and pine trees, and the occasional walnut tree.

I am looking to start mushroom hunting this spring. I'll admit I've got little experience at this and am attempting to learn the various types of mushrooms. I'll see if there are clubs in the area. The Morel mushroom looks quite simple to identify which is why I would like to start with this variety. Any suggestions other than going with other hunters to learn?

The past 2 years I have found 1 in my front yard, in the exact same spot, and I mean exact spot. Probably the same hole. I have looked around that spot each year thinking that there HAS TO be more, but I haven't found anything within about a 20 foot radius. What are the odds that year after year only 1 morel? There has to be more and im missing them right? Most of the other mushrooms around here in nor cal, ill find them popping up in a line. Are morels also gonna be in a line?
@Yappography
@Yappography 6 жыл бұрын
yeah that's what makes them so unique and sought after. They don't usually grow in line with each other but usually more randomly spread out in a radius around the tree you find them under. Sometimes you will just find those 1 random Morel that grows out of nowhere and nothing else near it. It happens and I have seen them do it too. I can't explain why they do that or how, but thats what makes them special.

I went out looking today too after watching this video, just in and around my yard, nothing crazy, and nothing. Can I assume that because that on has popped, IF there are any others around, that they will have popped right around the same time? Or is it possible, that this one mushroom, is some kind of fungal oddity, or that little hole that it grows out of is actually some kind of doorway or wormhole or something weird, that causes it to pop at an oddball time, compared to the rest in the area? Loved the video by the way, very professional, and entertaining all the way through, excellent job.

If folks would leave a couple in each area that they find them and allow them time to drop their spores they would be greatly rewarded the following years with lots and lots of patches that continue to produce easy picking lol just saying,one mushroom can produce millions of spores that if left alone with spread and prosper!
@bethechange4934

I think the best thing you can do ( short of actually growing out some spawn and seeding the forest ) is to carry your mushrooms out in a mesh bag like a laundry bag and not a paper sack or other spore tight container. They start producing spores when they are only a few inches tall and can drop billions in a day. If you carry them out in an open net type sack, you are dropping spores galore all over the place as you continue hunting. Some eople think that mushrooms need to fully mature, then dry to effectively spread their spores but that's not the case. Leaving a few is awesome too. I always do that when mushroom hunting.

I've watched countless videos on conditions for morels to grow. These conditions exist even in the middle of summer but morels will not grow then. So why is it morels only grow during the spring? What everybody seems not to notice are the trees. Where do the spores originate? During the Fall, the trees lose their leaves due to the sap returning to the roots below the frost level causing the tree to become dormant. When Spring arrives, the trees will start "budding leaves" meaning the root system is waking up allowing the sap back into the tree. When this happens, the roots are forcing sap faster than the tree can absorb and that excess sap is creating spores, leaking from the root system. When the tree is dying or dead, the roots are the last to go meaning spores are still being released. I've picked 8 gallons, in 4 hours, when the temps were 35 degrees F. and the ground was very dry! So, look at the trees during the waking up process and you will be there at the right time. Hope this helps Good Luck!

What if you’ve had a lot of rain and warm temps a week or so then it’s only 30’s and 40’s all day n night for two weeks!! Are they dead or do they still stay up? What if you’ve found them in a spot and the next year there’s none!! I’ve found them for 3 yrs in a spot and the last 3 there’s I’ve found none there.. will they come back? I leave the stem always, even shake my bag for spores to spread
@Yappography
@Yappography 4 жыл бұрын
fck fracking yes the morels will still grown so long as it doesn’t freeze at night. If you get freezing temps I have seen that end the season early but impossible to predict for sure. As far as your spots go... lots can contribute to you not finding them anymore. The spot could have dried up, your timing might be off as they may have popped before or after you checked and lastly, someone else could be hunting that same spot and beating you to them. For the most part yes a spot will keep producing for many years and even a decade or more before it dries up completely. I have spots that only produce every other year and then I have spots that do every year. Kinda of hit and miss most of the time with Morels.
