I’d posted a couple of questions here and they seem to have been taken down ?? Did they violate the t&c of KZbin ??? Just so I know for future.. thanks

@@Islendingar no, I don’t think so. I haven’t taken them down? Strange.

The key, therefore, is Commitment, Determination, Discipline, Repetition, Consistency, Honesty ... Correct, Jamie; one has to "Push" one's self mentally, emotionally and practically. In other words, to achieve saxophone mastery, one has to take the "J-'TRANE ROUTE", a "Parkeresque" path to excellence. Joe Farrell, Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Sal Nestico ... did use it. Chris Potter, James Carter, Wayne Escoffery and Chad L-B did, too. U.K's Courtney Pine and Andy Sheppard have taken that path, (and so also has Jamie - [smile]) Thanks, champ.

That’s fantastic to hear as I’ve been playing roughly the same length of time … granted I started on Bb clarinet then A & Eb followed as I grew more skilled and started to play in regional then national orchestras and bands ….. Tenor Sax has been a love for me and I’m getting to know it’s tougher than you first might think !!

👍 I agree. Most people are looking for the book / online course that lets them take the short cut so they don’t have to put the hours in. It’s the same with tone, they buy every mouthpiece know to man or gizmo so they don’t have to put the time / effort in to get a good tone… It just takes time and effort, years normally. If you’re slow at learning like me then it takes even longer but you get there in the end.

Of course you are completely right, Jamie. I regret wasting the hours, days, months and years I totally ignored my sax. Now I want to play everyday but can't quite do it. I try and snatch 10-20 minutes here and there but the temptation to try and just bash out a new lick remains!!

When driving Autocross/Solo (I believe you call it Autotest in the UK) we have a saying that I am constantly relearning and, thanks to Jamie, I now realize applies here as well..."Slow is smooth, smooth is fast"... I need to be more focused, consistent, patient...and smooth. As far as being a nutter...if we are committed sax players, it goes with the territory, doesn't it?

Good advice! I know I need to practice with a metronome, but I don't do it as much as I should. My brother (a professional pianist and piano teacher) said, "When you buy a metronome, buy an inexpensive one, so you won't regret it when you throw it against the wall!" Ha.

I'm certainly guilty of not being methodical enough. I really appreciate you saying pros practice methodically. I think it's easy to assume they don't when we hear only the finished product made to look/sound easy. Hearing you say that makes me feel better because difficult pieces don't come easy for me.

Sooo, the big secret to improving faster is ... focused practice on a regular basis? Well d'uh 😄 Just kidding, I love this. Matter of fact, it's what I tell most students in their very first lesson - something along the lines of "Aight, I'll tell you the secret to becoming a Saxgod right now .. yeah, really!" *confusion/scepticism/disbelief* "I can teach you an important concept within one lesson and I'll gladly repeat them or try to teach them in another way if you don't grasp them right away BUT (!!) the real work and the real progress starts when you begin to internalize them." I usually try to strike a diplomatic balance between clear honesty und emphasizing that this process can still be very fun and rewarding, until one learns to embrace the inner nutter 😄

Lol! My eyes are my weakest asset- I can’t see the notes as most music of any kind practice or otherwise are created in small font which limits me. I can print some things larger; however, most things no. I laugh at myself when I lean in closer to the music stand to see better and my sax knocks the stand over! I got too close😆🥹 Is there an app or a place where I can modify (enlarge music notes) ? Thanks Jamie, as always, “I promise to do what you say as best I can👌🏽” Cheers!
