Listening to this preacher's story is fascinating. I think his testimony is a template for Christian evangelical sociology. He clearly grew up in a society where Christianity was the majority religion, went through a period of alcohol use and other "wild" behavior, and made the decision to change his behavior. When he made this decision, he did some "shopping" for solutions and found a place for it in evangelical Christianity. He had friends who introduced him to Christianity (I would suspect that a prospective partner of the opposite sex might have had some influence, though he didn't mention any), and his brain gave the right dopamine hits for him to land in his new cultural niche. The idea that this is a miracle rather than a sociological fact is belied by the fact that such transformations can happen in pretty much any religious framework you might like; in another time or culture he could've been a Muslim, a Mormon, a Hindu, a Catholic, a Buddhist, or so on.

@S Gloobal Sigh. Once again, your god is based on Canaanite mythology and isn't real. How many times are you going to ask this question Goofball? According to the general consensus of scholarship *(even critical Christian scholars),* YHWH was originally incorporated into the Canaanite pantheon as a son of the Canaanite high god El before inheriting the top spot in the pantheon and El's wife Athirat (Asherah) before religious reforms. If you want to see if El is fictional, just read his mythology in the Ugaritic/Canaanite texts. "I should add here that it is very clear from the grammar that the noun nachalah in v. 9 should be translated “inheritance.” *Yahweh receives Israel as his “inheritance” (nachalah), just as the other sons of El received their nations as their inheritance (nachal, v. 8).* With this verb, especially in the Hiphil, the object is always what is being given as an inheritance. Thus, Israel is given to Yahweh as his inheritance. ((Here I’m indebted to Dan McClellan.)) It would make no sense for Elyon to give himself an inheritance. Moreover, as I’ve argued elsewhere, it is not just the Gentile nations that are divided up according to the number of the sons of El. It is all of humankind, i.e., “the sons of Adam.” This clearly includes Israel. And the sons of Adam are not divided up according to the number of the sons of El, plus one (i.e., plus Elyon). They are divided up, according to the text, solely according to the number of the sons of El. *Thus, that Yahweh receives Israel as his inheritance makes Yahweh one of the sons of El mentioned in v. 8. Any other construal of the text would constitute its rewriting."* *"The Most Heiser: Yahweh and Elyon in Psalm 82 and Deuteronomy 32 - Religion at the Margins"* based on the *majority scholarly consensus.* (Written by Thom Stark who is a Christian) *"Michael Heiser: A Unique Species? - Religion at the Margins"* (A second response to Michael Heiser) *"Excerpt from “Yahweh and the Gods and Goddesses of Canaan” by John Day - Lehi's Library."* *"The Table of Nations: The Geography of the World in Genesis 10 - TheTorah.com"* (Excluding the short narrative on Nimrod (vv. 8-12), which appears to be a later addition, Genesis 10 contains *70* names of nations or cities, a number that was symbolic of totality. Similarly, the descendants of Jacob were *70* in number (Gen 46:37; Exod 1:5), *as were the sons of the supreme Canaanite god El, with whom YHWH became equated.)* *"Mark Smith: Yahweh as El’s Son & Yahweh’s Ascendency - Lehi's Library"* (Mark Smith is a Catholic) *"02 | December | 2009 | Daniel O. There's a punchline in there somewhere but years later I haven't found it. At the beach it was foggy, before sunrise. When the service started the fog sort of surrounded the gathered people. When my friend got dunked in the ocean, the last to do so of that day, the sun crested the horizon and the fog lifted on a beautiful sunrise. I was moved. But looking at the weather report that day that is exactly what should have happened. My absolute favourite part about the getting in to heaven discussions is that Jesus was explicitly asked at one point. He said to follow the OT and to give away all your stuff. Christians do all sorts of contortion to make it so that Jesus is wrong, but also not a liar. It is quite amusing at times seeing how much thought has to go in to this one particular passage so they can still get in to heaven without doing either of the two things that Jesus explicitly said was required.
@SilverSixpence888 Жыл бұрын
Jesus also said that all you had to do was feed the hungry, clothe the poor, and visit people in prison. Very few actually do any of that.
@Thundawich Жыл бұрын
@@SilverSixpence888 The reason I bring up the part where he was specifically asked what to do to get in to heaven is because it really limits the amount of interpretation that you can put on the passage. Jesus was asked a direct question, and gave a direct answer. He says plenty of other stuff in plenty of other places throughout the gospels, but because Jesus is the one initiating those passages you have a lot more liberty to interpret it.

Heaven was a stumbling block. I couldn't see how an eternity spent on just ONE activity: praising God, didn't sound like a Hell all on its own to Christians. Humans enjoy so much more on Earth; things that would not even be an option in Heaven. No physical pleasures. Not even relationships. I thought often, even as a devout Christian, how boring Heaven sounded. Add in the fact that my church added this non-scriptural doctrine that said that the strength of your faith on Earth, gave you an extra reward in heaven. Big faith = mansion in heaven. Baby faith = some kind of heavenly shack? When I wasn't convinced He'd send me to Hell for sinning, I'd imagine the tiniest little house in Heaven for me.

To be anything less than that means the deity either doesn't care about all its "children", it isn't capable of seeing them, or that it wants those "children" to suffer.

The brand of this that I find annoying is when it comes with arrogance but even the humble believers can be very certain. Reading the Bible, I'm astonished anybody can come away with certainty on any topic. It is vague on most points and when it is clear, one can find clear contradictions to that very clarity.

I agree with you Paul. Sin does not exist objectively or universally. Sin is simply the label to put on to breaking religious rules. What fascinates me most about the evolution of sin through the Bible is when it is first mentioned. It is not mentioned at the "fall". It does not say Adam and Eve "sinned". It is first mentioned when God is warning Cain not to murder his brother. So, I guess, sin , originally, was an evil act against another human being. If sin, is defined that way, such as obeying the ten commandments, then most people can be "sinless" and not need a "savior".
@LadyTsuki Жыл бұрын
To say that a human mind cannot produce such a profound experience is to greatly underestimate just how complicated and amazing our minds can be. As an example, similar experiences can be had with a variety of drugs. The drugs interact with chemicals in our brain to produce what many would consider to be a "supernatural" experience. It's not to say that it's not amazing, but it's not really "supernatural". We also have lots of social cues, both obvious and subtle that affect our brains. I'd guess that this is why many near death experiences use stuff we've grown up with culturally. I'd find such stories more convincing if a Christian saw Mohammad or something like that. And no, an atheist seeing "a white light" doesn't convince me at all. The brain does tons of things when it thinks it's dying, along with the aforementioned cultural/social cues. Still, Paul saying they planned these manipulations (even if not maliciously) is a large reason I distrust religion. I enjoy the peak behind the curtain for sure!

There is a good word we should all know, "Home-blindness", that you do not see things you are used to unless someone point it out, like I have an apartment I lived in a very long time, but slowly over the years the ceiling in the bathroom got stained and I did not see that until a friend had his ADHD/Aspie child over that said "Your bathroom is yucky", even I had other folks over no one had pointed that out, but it was those words that made me understand. The same goes for the religion you are in, your friends in that religion will say all the good thing you want to hear, but if someone from outside the group say something it can be the truth or something you have to look into, christians that have only christian friends that they hang out with and do other thing than religious things, they do live in a echo chamber.

There is a LOT of narcissistic personality disorder among Christians. To wit: just recently at my church, one of the congregants was openly PRAISIN' JAYSUS because his "routine medical procedure" turned out well. He couldn't stop reminding people that his successful routine medical procedure was all BECAUSE OF JESUS and that, because the congregation was "praying for him", this PROVES the "POWER OF PRAYER!" So this guy actually believes that Jesus was right there with him in the operating room, making sure that he came out of the procedure OK! It apparently wasn't the doctors, nurses, medical technology ... NOPE! Jesus ....THE GOD OF THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE ....was in that operating room ENSURING a successful outcome! Meanwhile, about a dozen other people died in that same hospital that week. Their medical procedures didn't turn out OK. I guess Jesus didn't get a crap about them. Or how about all the other people - hundreds or thousands perhaps - dying in hospitals every day? Again, I guess Jesus didn't give a crap about any of them either. Not to mention the tens of thousands dying of disease and hunger all over the planet every single friggin' day! Again, I guess Jesus doesn't give a crap about them either. Let 'em starve!!! But this ONE GUY in my church!!?? Yeah, he gets special attention from JESUS! GOD HIMSELF!!! IT'S ALL ABOUT MEEEEE AND MUH JESUS!!!! HE DIED FOR MEEEEEEEEEE! The whole religion enables narcissism, but then turns around and disguises it beneath the mask of "Christian humility" so that, if a Christian is called upon their presumptuous narcissism, they will say, "No I am NOT! I AM HUMBLE!! LIKE JESUS!!!"

@@britaom3299 This shouldn't be surprising considering Christianity STARTS with the premise that you are of such cosmic importance and consequence that your affairs command the attention of some celestial creator/supervisor. And it was predestined before Creation!!! They DO seem, however, to be trying to avoid that big payoff at the end. Hmmm.....maybe deep down inside they have doubts and really ARE afraid? In fact, I wonder why they even BOTHER with doctors and hospitals in the first place??? Why are Christians sad at funerals if they believe the deceased are experiencing pure excasty with their god and that they will join them soon? Also from god's perspective, asking to be healed is telling god you DONT WANT that person to join with god in god's kingdom. 5:30 - "Whence" means "from where". There's no need to say "from whence", it's redundant.

"ATM machine" is my favorite.
@robertt9342 Жыл бұрын
@@Thezuule1I find that these are debatable. While ATM originally meant Automated/automatic Teller Machine, colloquially it’s referred to as an ATM and in that sense it is a name and therefore ATM machine should be accurate. The difference is “from whence” is like “overwhelmed” or “irregardless”
@Thezuule1 Жыл бұрын
@@robertt9342 it being referred to as an ATM doesn't mean it isn't suddenly not an acronym. SCUBA, PIN, CAPTCHA, etc., are still acronyms no matter how colloquial their use is. Saying ATM machine is redundant.

Well when asked about weather I am going to heaven or hell, I said Stov'ikor. The parson asking me stood silent for a moment and went over to the lady behind me and she said I am with him. I at the time did not know her, but we enjoyed the evening at the beer garden telling jokes and each others company. Peace

I really appreciated the man sin god gap idea! I think the reason why this young man became a viral sensation, is, first off the subject matter, but I think that his good looks and physique certainly helped him in his preaching to the choir. For me, what came to mind was pride. Isn’t that one of the sins that’s in the gap?

I was a Vineyard worship leader in SoCal for years and it was amazing how you can manipulate emotions. I held back on a lot of it, but being a musician you can't keep it totally out. Plus, THANK YOU for the point that if Adam & Eve didn't know disobedience was wrong... how could god say it was sin and judge them? Wondered that forever. Great show.

I sometimes see faces in certain types of electrical sockets. I think it's the US type. The breathless way the preacher is talking sometimes, reminds me of the speech patterns of 'magicians' in live shows.

Can I make a "no true atheist" argument in reply to his claim of being an atheist? His searching for god certainly hints he thought gods exist

I perused the comments and didn’t see what struck me. First, Paul, you are a young man, at least by my lights. It’s true that Mr. Taylan is younger still. In fact, though he says he was kicked out of college twice, I have to wonder if his brain is even yet fully developed. But I’m still going to say this: he’s very pretty. That’s enough to explain some of his viewership. It does not escape my notice that he wears a shirt that grips his biceps. He’s obviously on the positive side of well to do, too. I could wish that he had said something that was new, that I had not heard before. One more thing: I find it interesting that he’s more attractive in your video than he is in his salesman role. How does that work? Paul, I appreciate the work you do and the methodology you use in executing it. I much appreciate how well thought out everything is.

When I hear someone making a testimony of having made many poor life choices, and then choosing to become a Christian, I have to ask the question: How do we know they stopped making poor life choices? And if they did, what caused the change exactly? I acknowledge that becoming a Christian can change a persons behavior. Becoming a part of a different social grouping tends to have that effect. When someone says "don't listen to people that tell you this is a cult", that is a very bad red flag. If an organization is not a cult, there is no need of that warning. So I can only conclude that even he, at some level, believes that his organization at least, has some appearances of a cult. If I go to a used car dealer, and they tell me "trust me, this car isn't a lemon", that salesman isn't making a sale. In that one video, I head exhortations to trust him personally, trust multiple biblical books, and emotional experiences over logical thought. I think I will pass on that.

He never was an atheist, he preaches like a preacher, he's been going to church, listening to men in dresses..

I find it funny that the preacher does not want anyone to go to ‘woke’ churches. The general definition of ‘woke’ seems to be “someone who is woke is very aware of social and political unfairness” (Collins Dictionary) or “alert to racial prejudice and discrimination”, and aren’t those things the things that many Christian’s like to point out that Jesus was and that Christians are ( when they for example try to say it was because of Christian reformers that the salve trade was abolished). I have seen this attack on ‘woke’ by a number of the more evangelical Church of England vicars over here in the UK in their YT channels.
