Recent media attention to improper behavior by physicians with regards to gynecologic exams has been widespread. It can be difficult for a woman to know what is and what is not an expected part of a routine exam. I created this video to prepare you for some of the questions you might be asked and what is considered a normal part of the exam. Always remember that you can ask for a chaperone. Trust your instinct and speak up.
.
*Your doctor should always wear gloves when performing a pelvic exam
.
*A pelvic, rectal and breast exam is appropriate and routine but should always be done with consent
.
*You may be asked a detailed sexual history including whether you have sex with men, women or both
.
*You may be asked about high risk behavior like having multiple partners, drug or alcohol abuse
.
*Routine medical questions like personal or family history of medical illnesses etc.
.
*Always remember you have the right to refuse. You should feel like you can discuss anything and everything without judgement or prejudice.
