In your situation you are doing good. I have a system that works good for me. What I have is a bunch of barrels 55 gal cut the top and bottom off. Then I put bio matral about 1 foot then 2 inches of good top soil. Then repeat until full then top off with 2 inches of top soil. Seal around base of barrel with soil to keep mice out. Keep top sealed with soil, water once a week. As it srinks ad more bio and soil. Remove barrel each month put dry on bottem wet on top. 2 months compost ready to use. Clean up garden in to barrels in fall use in garden in spring.

Usually a dump post 4-5 month is fine regardless of weather.

I have problem with beatles/Cockroaches in my compost "hole" (probably because the bottom is waterproof). Do you think it's safe to practice some small holes into the barrel if I want to let beatles out of it? Thank you

Thank you for the upload. I am just starting composting for the first time. My question is, is the bin like this gonna smell? I only can keep it on the terrace. I have tiles so I will put the second box underneath for draining. Can I use that liquid as fertilizer? Thanks a lot!

I just recently started hot composting.. bugs in compost? Oof, I thought maybe I didn’t get my compost hot.. the bugs, can any of them harm your plants? I keep seeing lady bugs on top of my compost. I was scared there was aphids in there too, that the lady bug was snacking on

No, you don't need holes in the side of the bin. Drainage holes in the base is just fine.

mine is filled with maggots, disgusting, for years this is all i get ... eventually of oourse it turns to compost, but so unaesthetic. am in North Central Florida. Also get a lot of stinging flies maybe because I love in horse/cow country. Any hints what I am doing wrong? This happens in barrels or in open air bins or piles.
