If you watch this channel, you know why and how to prune tomato plants. I've had several tomato pruning videos. But never one like this. What about cherry tomatoes? Should you or shouldn't you prune them? What about currant tomatoes? What are currant tomatoes? I'll show you all of this!

What?! We don’t have to prune cherry tomatoes?! I’ve been doing it wrong all this time... No wonder my harvests have been less than satisfactory. Thank you, Brian, for always being so informative.

Currant tomatoes are my favorite! I love the way it's just one bite that explodes in your mouth. Plus, I don't need to cut them for salads, stir fries, or even pizza topping. They also seem to be more resilient in the heat (less blossom drop) and less susceptible to any pests besides aphids. Now if only my summer squash would cooperate...

Here in N TX cherry tomatoes go NUTS. I have to prune them or they will take over the whole garden. I also prune at least 1 to 2 feet at the ground level. If not the pests just walk right up the leaves onto the plant.

My side yard got taken over by current tomatoes 4-5 years ago. They come back every year and produce tons of fruit. But yes unless I prune it back every so often the plants entirely take over a 5’ x 20’ space within a month.

Beautiful garden! I wish I'd known someone like you when I wanted to start my first veggie garden. Starting small IS smart. Mine was small last year. I planned too big this year and some things did not get planted... still. Well, a lot had to do with going from winter straight into summer with no spring. But I have learned a lot, what I do have is thriving, and my lessons will yield better planning next time. 🐞🌱🐝

My container garden is going to provide more produce than I can eat and give away thanks to all of your great instruction....and also thanks to the products you recommend. Neptune's Harvest is the bomb! I planted everything very, very late this year because we kept having unseasonably cool temperatures here in NC, yet I picked my first cucumber yesterday and the vines are filled with more! Yellow squash has been dropping blossoms do I did my first "in vitro" pollination with a male flower this morning. He was a little embarrassed, but he survived. ;) Obviously my Barry White music didn't quite cut it. Thanks for all the great videos, Brian. I've never had such great looking plants and they are all from seed...such a savings over previous years. ;) I'll say it again, you have the best gardening channel on KZbin!

Tammy is really into gardening-I’m really happy for her. I planted Jujube tomato last season and it became a monster as well. Lots of fruit but huge green growth as well. Biggest winners so far this year have been Burgess buttercup winter squash and pink brandy wine tomato. About 30 squash from one hill and 15 good size tomatoes. Disappointments are Delicata squash and Carbon tomato. For some reason they just aren’t producing well. I guess it’s a crap shoot with heirloom tomatoes anyway but I know I’ll grow pink brandy wine from now on.

I have a highly productive cherry tomatoes plant that I wish someone had told me earlier not to prune it eventhough it is indeterminate and that even if I do I can let the sucker grow new roots and start a new plant. I think in the future I will let the suckers grow and prun only the lower ones near the soil and use them to start a second wave of plants or share with friends.

That’s awesome! I didn’t even know there was such a thing as currant tomatoes! Now I’ll have to keep an eye open for some seeds! As for my garden, everything is looking good (though apart from a zuchini and an eggplant 🍆 I haven’t been able to harvest anything yet) ... oh! And the salad! It’s growing like crazy! My basil also grows faster than I can eat it so I’ve started giving it to an ex-Italian chef so he can make some pesto with it! (Sooo looking forward to that!) My carrots where also delicious! And the beans are fantastic. (Though they have started to wilt from the bottom up and I don’t know why... ;_; ) Thank you once again for this video! I always learn something with you and get so much inspiration! Gardening with your guidance has been so much fun that I plan to double the size of my vegetable garden for next year! :D

Hi! First, I’M OBSESSED WITH YOUR CHANNEL!! Thank you so much for all your words of wisdom and support. You have helped make this scary horrible time in our lives better! QUESTION: for raised bed tomato plants (I don’t have your system but I will next season!), can I move plants that I planted less than 2 weeks ago? I don’t like where one of them is; it’s only about 8” tall. Thanks for any help and everything you do!!

Thank you so much that's very sweet and means a lot! Veggies are pretty forgiving when moved especially if it's only been in the ground a short time... you should be OK just make sure to water them well when you transplant. One tip is do it in the eve so the sun is gone for awhile and gives them a chance to settle in.

I really love to see a gardener teaching others within the family - awesome! During our covid lockdown here in NZ (over now as we have no community transmission), my son and family wanted to put in a vege garden. So he made the raised beds, and then, using facetime, I was able to help him with his plants, composting etc etc. And on facetime participated in the planting with the whole family. Such a delight. I loved hearing the kids voices in the background on your video!! Wanting to be in on the action.

I have used all your advice for growing my first tomatoes. I don't actually think we'll be able to eat this many 🤣 I grew quite a few cherries and normal tomatoes all from seed and had to give away loads. I kept 4 of each plant and every plant is full of tomatoes, they're not ready yet as we need a bit of sun in England (we had a really bad few weeks of weather) I've followed all of your advice and will certainly be doing the same next year. I can't thank you enough 👏

This was so helpful and Tammy has such a wonderful and vivacious personality! I had no idea how to prune cherry tomato plants. I knew they were indeterminate, but was confused when people would talk about pruning and always wondered about my cherry guys. I have pruned the bottoms pretty heavily to keep from getting early blight and powdery mildew, but didn’t have the heart to single stem it. I’m glad I didn’t!!!

Oh you people down in sunny California.. just make me jealous!! im way up here in RAINY, WINDY NORTHERN/central ALBERTA, WHERE NOTHINGWILL GROW UNTIL JULY OR AUGUST AND THEN THERE WILL BEFROST AT NIGHT IN august, so. Not much can be harvested here, I cant imagine how the first settlers ever survived out here in the early part of the 20th century.. they came to homestead on “FREE LAND” from all over Europe, lived in log /mud homes or tents at first, broke their farmland, and raised big families to boot! TAMMY IS DOING GREAT.. its fun to see the happiness a simple garden can provide... just imagine those poor settlers enjoying their first harvest of food or,,crops, I guess corn, beans some potatoes maybe, but no squash for them Ill bet!.. not at first anyway eh?SO MUCH FUN FOR ME TO SEE THIS ALSO ...I KEEP TRYINGTO GROW MY TOMATOES HERE ANYWAY(on my balcony in pots or bags) I KEEP HOPING AND PRAYING FOR SOME WARMTH AND SUNSHINE... it should soon happen...last year was a complete wash, so this year cant be a RAIN ALL SUMMER AGAIN, SURELY,!... now you know why I said Im jealous eh?🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦..BEST..CHERYL

I would prune cherry tomatoes 6 inches above the ground. In Central Texas you need the shade of the plant to protect against sun scald. I would trellis for support. In northern climates commercial growers have to use hoop houses and seem to trim everything. In texas you would be cooking your tomatoes in June.

Bill Fitch, growing in zone 4b in Canada. I have 18 currant tomatoes (5 varieties), and grow them all pruned to single stem on a 10' wide trellis. They're vigorous (some types much more than others) but controllable - in my space at least. Love the sweet/sharp bite of flavour. I also grow 25+ varieties of cherry tomatoes - I just enjoy them more than the standards or paste tomatoes. About 6 of the varieties are determinate and I let them bush out, but the others I prune to single stem and have great success. Productive fruit clusters all the way up the plant. So I'm not wanting to be a contrary voice as I love this channel... but there are other ways to grow cherry toms successfully.

My raised gardens are not doing well. Yellow squash and zucchini have yellow leaves and are not productive. The two volunteer tomato plants are the only ones doing well. I’m convinced that connecting plants to the ground may have been the better way to garden. I have Kellogg’s mulch, rock dust, worm castings and a thin layer of coconut coir added 2 weeks ago. I see the white veins running through the leaves of cucumbers, zucchini and yellow squash. My eggplant has small yellow spiders which I’ve treated with neem oil then 2 weeks later, BT which I wiped down and lightly misted again. One eggplant 🍆! Yay and a battle going on with bugs on peppers. My pole beans have lost all leaves, just got pale and dropped. They did climb from their 3 gallon pot, then failed. Too much water? Every 2-3 days. I use a moisture meter and my hands to feel under the surface 3-5 “. Should I add more soil? At a loss.

I had a mediocre tomato harvest last year after I worked hard on taking care of my plants. Oh, well. I had a volunteer tomato in the compost pile and I just let it go. The only thing I did for it was to try not to step on it. It put out the tiniest tomatoes that were like flavor bombs! They were fantastic! I have no idea where the seed that produced this plant came from. Anyway, I trimmed off some suckers and stuck them in water and a couple of them made it through the winter. Now I have four of them in pots and two that I put on the trellis with my indeterminate tomatoes. Now I know that I have to dig them up and devise a place for them. I don't mind because the more of those little flavor bombs that I get, the better!

My father in law has a Sweet 100 that grew into serious bush, was blocking his walkway. He trimmed it back and it grew bigger faster. He trimmed it back again even further and it grew back even more. He has more tomatoes than he can eat or give to his neighbors. Clearly this variety likes to be trimmed back.

Tammy's garden looks great. I have been pruning my cherry tomatoes. I must of missed that fact in your tomato pruning video. Fortunately, they aren't too big yet.

I had one cherry tomato in a bucket get curly leaf virus, so it stopped growing. The other one was planted later in the garden bed and is just now taking off. I missed that, too, so I'm glad this video came before I snip any more suckers. The only problem is my labels fell off, so I don't know which one it is of two plants. 😉

@@joanies6778 Glad to see I'm not the only one that seemed to have missed his other videos about not pruning cherry tomatoes. I'd like to know which videos he said that, because I've been watching them for several months now and don't recall anything about cherry tomatoes being discussed.

I got a couple questions for FAQ FRIDAY. I am a newbie and trying out container gardening. I noticed my sweet green bell pepper plants are wilting and I have number of peppers with blossom end rot. First of all I think the issue I am having is the planter I am using is keeping things too wet. The wilting started after I watered and it rained in the next hour. I drained the planter and it seemed to help. The pepper plants seemed to recover over night but it rained again and I emptied the planter again and removed the peppers that are rotting. I also have two tomato plants in the same planter with the two sweet green bell pepper plants which appear to be doing great. None of the tomato plants are wilting or have blossom end rot. They have some leaf curl. So my questions are 1 - Do have too much in one planter (i sent you photos on facebook)? 2 - I have been using Miracle-Gro® Water Soluble Plant Food Vegetables and Herbs every 14 days and I just noticed their is no Calcium in it and it high in Nitrogen, is it too late to introduce Calcium at this time? The Bone Meal I can get quickly at my local garden center is Jobe’s Organics Bone Meal or do you recommend something different? I am planning to switching out the Miracle-Gro® Water Soluble Plant Food Vegetables and Herbs with Espoma Organic Tomato-tone, what are your thoughts about Espoma Organic Tomato-tone?

Currant tomatoes... I was wondering what the correct term for Everglades was, thanks! Mine are still going nuts even in October, when I already pulled out my others (see pic to the left). My understanding is that in certain FL zones, they will literally invade entire yards! This is good to know; next year I will be planting my Everglades BEHIND the others!

My currant tomatoes just took a bad turn. I wish I could find a video talking about what is wrong with them and how to fix it. I really hope it's not viral.

It’s a little late for corn for me but I’m going to give it a try. I’ll be replacing some squash plants that died with corn. Squash bugs got to my summer squash.

Question on tomato trellis. I have 8 tomatoes growing up the twine. 5 of the 8 are almost to the top of the twine. 7’ tall. 3 are lagging behind by about 2 feet. You have said to let out the twine and then move to the next loop. Going to try it and move to the next loop, but I’m worried that the ones that aren’t tall are going to hit on the end 2x3.

I prune my indeterminate cherry tomatoes, not the suckers, just the green leaves. I have two to three tomato plants growing in I think it is a 20 gallon pot so they need some room. I purchased some mature birch trees 16 years ago and I'm using those pots so I don't know if they're 25 gallon?? So far the pruning I've done of the leaves doesn't seem to have any negative effects

I let the first two suckers on my cherry tomatoes keep growing so the plant has 3 stems. After that they get pruned like any other indeterminate tomato. I always end up with more cherry tomatoes than I can use. Excess sungold tomatoes make a delicious, sweet tomato soup that can be canned for winter meals.

I saw lots of ‘growing tomatoes’ videos to learn and no one thought it was worth mentioning that when it comes to the cherry sort, you don’t prune it. As if that is an alien sort which no beginner will ever choose to start with. Unbelievable!
