The best advice here was to keep $1000 or one month's expenses in the checking account and treat that as your zero. I've been doing that for about 10 years and have never worried about going into the red.

Wow someone else doing the same thing I’ve been doing for years. I saved up for enough money to have a one month buffer. All my bills for this month are paid with last months income.👍 also I have this set up and use my CC for gas and Food and also paid off every month. No issues.

Here's the thing George, I'm the kind of person who needs to see the bill to pay it, often with a check. Any auto payment has to be equal pay. I use a written check register, a budget tracker I've created to be certain all bills are paid and the every dollar premium. In fact the bank numbers and the every dollar tracker doesn't equal the same dollar amount and it makes me crazy. I'm OCD about it all. If you are someone who can keep track with online payments, and a b'zillion texts and emails, good for you. For me it's almost as bad as using credit cards. It's too easy to get into trouble with overspending or forgetting a bill needs to be paid. Out of sight out of mind.

This woman's scenario is a classic issue when you use a credit card. You first start out spending from your monthly income. Then you get a credit card which enables you to spend more than your monthly income, so you do so. Now, you are hooked because you never seem to have enough to fully pay off the monthly credit card balance, so you keep using the card. Then life keeps happening, and you keep spending on it repeatedly. At the same time, you keep lying in the comments section of Dave Ramsey's videos about how you pay your credit card off every month and never pay interest. Eventually, you dig a deep hole you cannot escape, so you panic-ring Dave Ramsey for advice.

What happened to them was her husband had his pay days changed which left them short when it came to paying the bills. What they are doing is perfect. We have a buffer of $5000 which we think of as $0. Or pull some money out of your emergency fund to have a buffer and fund the emergency fund back over a few months time.

I had the same problem this lady has. The way I fixed it was to put both CC in a drawer and rarely use them except for things that require a card such as an airbnb rental. Then we have a savings account to transfer the remainder after paying end of the month bills. Then just stick to the budget.

I figure out what my monthly budget is first. Then all the money goes into my savings account and each month I transfer the monthly budget amount from my savings account to my checking account. That's how I do it. That way my savings account has a big pile of money at all times and I limit my spending to my budget amount.

I get what she's saying. Before you remove credit cards, have a 1-month buffer. By the end of the month, pay current credit card bill in full, cancel the cards then use the 1-month buffer for budgeting the incoming expenses. Woala, no running from bills anymore and fearing it'll catch up, you're chasing them instead and now you are in control. It's a nice perspective because you don't have to look back, you can focus on moving forward. Whatever's left in your variable expenses budget, you add to savings/investments. That'll encourage saving and spending less.

Why do you want to stop using credit cards? If you are paying the balance every month then you are using credit cards properly and responsibly. There is nothing wrong with using the credit card to pay bills as long as you pay the credit card every month. Calling companies to change the date of payment is stupid. The best thing about credit cards is that you can pay the bills when they are due and pay the credit card off every month so you don't have to do something stupid like calling the companies to change due dates of the bills. Plus credit cards come with points and other benefits where they give you discounts and cash back. Keep your credit card and keep using it like you are.

When I reach the donut hole and pay through the roof for name brand drugs that have no generic counterpart perhaps? Or when I had a hospital stay, am insured, yet was charged $2200? Or when I had essential dental work that cost me $7K? When I was young I didnt save. I started to save and did well but got laid off and started to have health issues. I am doing the best I can and dont splurge. The biggest vacation I go on is once or twice a year overnighters. Bought a used car with cash. Food shop very judiciously for the best prices. Gasoline shop very judiciously as I know exactly where to get the cheapest name brand gas. I dont buy fancy clothes and only purchase essentials like socks and skivvies. I have very basic cable and Netflix only subscription wise. I have a flip phone with a $24 a month plan. I wont eat packing peanuts and claim they taste just like Gnocchi. Gotta draw the line somewhere.

I set up auto pay too - when I get the bill, I automatically set it up for my bank to pay it. No way would I ever authorize a company to just debit my account. I don’t even have a debit card! If money is coming out of my checking account, I’m either writing a check, taking it out of the ATM, or my bank is sending it electronically to the payee through bill pay once I set it up.

This woman had a dozen excuses lined up. Instead of doubling up that mortgage payment, for one month just pause it and save a month's worse of expenses... and then you don't need to even touch the CC. This isn't rocket science.
