How adorable! We’ve made friends w several in our neighborhood. I always have walnuts, pecans, peanuts, or almonds on me in case I see them out and about.

Thank you on behalf of the squirrels for helping them with nuts (despite nuts being pricey..) I hope you are still feeding and helping and loving them ❣️

I sort of tamed one that lived in or near my back yard at the time. Over a few weeks(?I think) it would take a peanut out of my hand. One day when I was sitting outside, it jumped onto the back of my chair (and unavoidably my hair too) and I screamed. lol I loved that I was able to feed them but didn't want to affect their foraging or make them trust humans too much so I stopped. I felt bad though. My elderly landlord/friend wasn't a fan of animals so that was another reason I stopped. 😕 Fun memories though.

LOL! When I lived in Evanston, they'd come to the 3rd floor window nightly ca. 10 p.m. Whoever saw them first, my cat or me, would run get the other. It was such a JOY to watch their routine & then they'd fly across the street. I'm always on the lookout for more, in Chicago.

Just make sure if you use nuts they are what you would normally find in their habitat ie pecans walnuts something they would recognize as food I throw out carrots and apples of course naturally they're sliced

Is it ok to leave nuts for the squirrels in the park, and how much habituation to humans is healthy or not healthy? What concerns should we have about squirrels during the time of the pandemic? Thanks!

We asked Joel to weigh in and here's what he had to say: Setting out peanuts and sunflowers seeds (some even go all out with walnuts, almonds and cashews) in one's yard on a rail or picnic table provides great viewing and some "landscaping" as squirrels bury some of these in lawns, planter boxes and gardens. Feeding squirrels in public parks should be more judicious and it may be prohibited by ordinances (same can go for pigeons). Squirrels in parks get a lot of leftovers either intentionally or unintentionally left out by folks. You will see them fossicking in garbage cans. So, if you do or must, do not overdo it. Leaving mounds of food for wildlife turns them into vermin. Throw the food to them. Do not encourage them to take it from your hand. When acclimated to feed from people's hands or even laps, the squirrels may become spooked and bite. Neither you nor the squirrel appreciates that. Furthermore, we generally coax the squirrels when the weather is nice and they are least interested. We sometimes convince them that we are safe and wonderful vending machines. hen, when they are desperate for food they approach just about anybody, "shaking" the vending machine and not understanding why the human is not forthcoming (ask the undergrads about squirrels on U of C campus!). In terms of COVID-19, the CDC reports a low risk of infection to animals, primarily pets, and hence an even lower risk of a back-infection from animals to people. Research is wanting, but the virus has not been detected in squirrels. In fact, disease transmission from tree squirrels to humans in Chicagoland is virtually absent. Though, it's always good to check the CDC website.

They are planting some of them? They are genetically evolved to do this? If they ate all of them there would be no new trees growing?

Eastern grey squirrels will damage the nut radical which forms the tap root prior to burying to prevent the nut from germinating as germination destroys the kernel as a food source.

@@cheriwhiteman9578 Sadley in the uk grey squirrels are one of the top invasive species, they now cause a minimum 15% of songbird nest failures due to predation of eggs/chicks and also spread a virus to the countries native red squirrels.
