315 metres long, 65 metres high, weighing 80,000 tonnes and capable of transporting more than 7,000 people, the Meraviglia is the ultimate cruise ship. But how was she built? More than 2,500 people worked day and night, using the latest technological developments to lessen the environmental impact.

@@lukepeita5402 The whole thing is based on flawed thinking and an awful lot of guesswork. The maintenance cost ALONE on this sort of build is going to be prohibitive in the long-term, leading to fewer cruise arrangements and a consequent loss of income. Further to all that, it should be remembered that during the post-sail days and the advent of powered vessels, simplicity was regarded as a necessity - one to keep the initial cost down, and two, to keep maintenance outgoings to a minimum; however it's in man's nature to "improve" such machinery to maximise performance, so it's obvious that "tweaking" hardware will eventually lead to failure of some of the more heavily-stressed items in the drive train. In the case of ships, you can multiply those extra costs by fourfold to get anywhere near the potential losses of overstressing ANY aspect of the original specifications of the vessel - so the OBVIOUS inference is to keep everything as simple as possible. "Pushing the envelope" might seem to be an added attraction, but when weighed against the possibilities of overloading / overstressing even minor parts of the ships' inventory could have even bigger ramifications, not only from local upsets among the passengers and crew, but to the good name of the company as a whole. In short, and using the well-worn RN saying, "keep it simple, stupd"!!

Wow. This hydrodynamic engineering and Computational Fluid Dynamics is going to revolutionize the way that ships have sailed for the last 300 years. Modern ships always had pointed bows and propellers. As long as you can fit through the Suez Canal I guess you're good to go, now. There has also been great strides forward in the development of hydrofoil techniques, too, for smaller craft. My Dad was a foreman at a Republic Steel plant in Ohio in the 1950's and he said they made the best steel in the world. He would be very proud at how steel is being produced and used now.

actually, most municipalities use human consumption of 88 gallons per day per person. that would be 616,000 gallons per day for 7000 persons. or 2,331,813 liters per day for 7000 persons. or 2,332 cubic meters per day for 7000 persons.

_"But hey this ship is soldered together and that is revolutionary"_ That's not revolutionary either. They've been building ships using the "block" system for almost 20 years. All contemporary ships are built like that. Welding itself goes back to the late 1880's with metal hulls and all-welded ship construction started in the 1940s. There is literally nothing new in presentation. But it is still cool seeing the ground-up inside story.

What an astounding feat of engineering. And what is entirely missing from the lovely presentation is the magnitude of consumption. Thank goodness it is 20% more efficient yes. Yet that relative number fails to mention it consumes on the order of 100 kilos of fuel per passenger per day. Thank about that. Each passenger is living in his own car with the engine running at maximum speed 24 hours a day. And the sulfur emission is 8 times worse than what a car is allowed to produce. The stink is so strong that even in a 40 knot wind (70+ kph) designers need to manage the airflow so that passengers don't smell it, it blows away to fall as heavy particulate and acid rain and produce 1/8 of the world's sulfur emissions. While it produces 500,000+ human deaths per year (specifically cruise liner emissions per the WHO), it does partly reflect solar energy and lower global warming.

It's simple. The weight of the water that the ship displaces is less than it weighs. The ship is mostly air, water is heavy AF. Doesn't matter if it's a log of wood or 100k t ship. As long as the displaced water weighs more than the ship it will float.
