And to ask God for guidance from the Holy Spirit is that one needs to have a prayer life so that one can understand God and let Him guide oneself. This is what cardinals do. Thats it. Matthew May Wrong. Married priests or married bishops aren't banned, there's no dogmatic rule for that. In 22 of the 23 catholic tradtions a married priesthood is very common. The latin tradition is the only tradition that prefers unmarried priests, and in most cases doesn't allow for married men to become priests. Unmarried priests and unmarried bishops aren't allowed to marry. But it would be okay if they were already married before they became a bishop or priest. It's the same with deacons. In all 23 traditions a married men can become a deacon. But an unmarried deacon, can't marry and remain a deacon. (Female priesthood or episcopacy will never happen within the catholic or orthodox church. But it should be possible to become a female deacon within these churches. I don't know why females aren't advocating for this change, as there is no dogma banning it, but rather a tradition. Female priests and bishops is impossible because it's a dogma.) Source: I'm an agnostic who feels culturally catholic, I have read quite a bit about catholic doctrine.

What do you make of Jesus saying that he was giving Peter the "keys of the kingdom" and building his church on this "Rock" (a synonym for Peter?). Are you saying that Jesus did not intend to found a church? Does he not call "a people to himself?" Are we not "one body, one bread?" members of one another? yes....they will keep doing so till the one they elected accepts, I don't remember anyone declining though as it is perceived to be disobedience or pride of the elected cardinal.

They restart the whole thing. However, it's more common for cardinals who don't like to be Pope to inform the rest of the college that they'd say no if the position is offered to they, and so the rest of the cardinals don't vote for that person in succeeding ballots.

No, I would not say so. Why would you assume that for the Pope to be chosen by God, that that means each individual Cardinal must be perfectly in tune with that divine will? I think the cardinals themselves are pretty humble in saying they don’t always know things like that. Think of it this way, the timing of my last child was divine in nature even though I (playing a practical part) didn’t think so. But I submitted to that divine will. And so do any cardinals voting for anyone other than the ultimate winner.

He would make it clear to his fellow cardinals prior to voting, that he is not interested in accepting the status of pope. And if that doesn't work, or if he were a non-cardinal elected pope, he would resign, just like Benedict XVI did. Non-cardinals being elected pope is very rare. Even though any Catholic male can theoretically become the pope if enough cardinals select him, the cardinals usually promote one of their own.

carultch Non Cardinals don't HAVE To Resign or Accept the position, remember this isn't a forced position. And yes, it is more likely that a Cardinal will be The Pope but, remember Some Laity, Bishops or Priest are Spiritually and Diplomatically more fit for the position than a Cardinal (i.e Giovanni Montini, Archbishop of Milan(Later Pope Paul VI) he got around 10-20 votes in the 1958 papal conclave and he wasn't a cardinal. But, They Elected Angelo Roncalli instead (Pope John XXIII)
