Wouldn't question your statement as I was only a jeweller for just over 12 years, but it Seems a bit long-winded and fiddly doing it on the strecher, I would have thought on a triblet with a hide mallet would knock it round quicker, then in the doming block for re-profiling the D-shape, different strokes for different folks I guess!

@@thekingjackshowpodcast rings can be made in two pieces for a variety of reasons, I don't know specifically what the reason would have been in this case but some possibilities are. 1: the ring was a "spinner" ring, this allows the outer D-shaped ring to spin around against the concave inner ring, this is done purely as an aesthetic choice. 2: the ring was made hollow. This is generally done to save weight and by extension, money. 3: the ring could be made from two different metals. There are a lot of people with allergies to different metals these days so it is possible that the inner ring, i.e the part in contact with the finger, may be made out of a metal which is less likely to cause irritation or allergy. There are probably other reasons too but those are the ones that immediately spring to mind.

Yes, they do. He used the expanding sizer to round the bands and remove the imperfections, then used the cup device to shrink them back to the original size. I think he handed it to the customer to check size before the final polish and steam clean. I watched a jeweler friend perform these miracles many times. That is many years of experience for those quick, perfect results.

Yes, almost always the ring tends to get too large before the expanding can straighten out all dents. In this case he also had the structure on the outside which can get distorted and also be damaged when shrinking back to original, so this was carefully and nicely done by the man. You must have the customers actual ring-size from the start so you know the margins, this ring was not well suited for taking a bit out if he had expanded it too much.

It's for structural support, pure gold can be soft and damaged easily, same concept as a katana just different metals

It can also reduce gold weight and by bevelling the interior in conjunction with an insert you can get some amazing bang for your buck. Don't get me started on wax filled gold jewellery lol.
