So like if I put an equipped item what happens to the buffs on my item is it still active in my battles

You have to equip the totem cus I put a level 26 chuku

2 totems, 1 for defense other for atack.

So you don’t het totems until castle 26

Also the out of 60 is just the totals number if you were to max the tree out. You have 9 right now in the one, all skills are worth 3 and there are 20 skills if you count all the way around the tree, giving you 60 points to max the tree out. So no you don't need to raise that number in any way
