Hello everyone! You are watching another episode at Military TV! Have you ever wondered how do the warships communicate when the radio contacts are being silent such as when doing convoy during the battle times? Or how do the ships navigate in order to keep the fleet all together and prevent them from collisions to one another?
In today’s session we will take a look at “The Blinker Lights”, what is it actually? how does it works? and how does it transform from time to time?
Generally, the blinker light has been used by warships all around the world to deliver messages across long distances for more than 200 years. Since 1867, lights have been used to spell out messages in Morse code. The "blinker light" became a helpful tool for signalling after the introduction of electric lights in the 1890s. Blinker lights were vital for commerce ships operating in wartime convoys. This blinking lights is a type of semaphore system that uses a visual signalling device to communicate optically, generally using Morse code. Captain Philip Howard Colomb of the Royal Navy was the first to put the idea of flashing dots and dashes from a lantern into reality in 1867. Additionally, signal lamps continue to be used to the present day on naval vessels. They allow convenient, relatively secure communications, which is especially beneficial during periods of radio silence, such as for convoys operating during the Battle of the Atlantic.
Since World War II, the process for sending messages using signal lamps has barely changed. It requires someone trained in Morse code to operate the lamp’s shutter by hand, and involves a lot of time receiving, decoding, and replying to messages. Using FLTC, Sailors can quickly and easily type and send messages-with fewer mistakes-even if they don’t know Morse code.

My dad was a signalman during WWII .... so I often went to the signal bridge when I was off-watch (I was a nuke snipe) to see what they did. Sailors are a great lot and we love explaining our jobs to other sailors when we can ... The carrier I was on had a great signal gang and I learned a lot.

I have a vague idea how warships communicate "when radio contacts are being off," but I'm positive the folks who upload to Military TV's channel are communicating in some language other than English.

It's known as Morse code. It's known as Morse Lamp used on early maritime communication at the time! Blinker light?

On a serious note, does this mean morse is still taught to sailors and possibly in sere school, because the whole dots and dashes thing has been used to transmit messages since forever

False: they actually just have one of the newer recruits swim across with a letter in a zip lock baggy. If it's over a long range they give him water wings.

Oh great. So when the battery dies on the iPad mini, the Battleship is just going to have to go down. Also, I've never, ever heard of any computer being hacked.

Ive heard of Korean morse code, do other "languages" exist so you can "encrypt" blinking lights? Yeah, pull out kim and put him on the lights, he can talk to lee on the other ship , pretty sure they don't teach korean morse in russian or chinese sub school 🤣

The grammatically correct title should be "How Do Warships Communicate When Radio Contacts Are Off?" The title should not include the word "Being".
